‘Journey Imagery in the I Ching’:
understanding the key images in your readings
i (aka the I Ching) uses journey images to describe how we 'travel' through life just as we do in everyday speech: for example, 'coming to a standstill', 'making progress', or 'getting somewhere'. But Yi communicates these ideas through a range of very specific images drawn from the stories and experiences of ancient China. If you want to understand your readings more fully, and put them to use more confidently, then getting to grips with these specific images and phrases will give you a real head start.
This is the recording and transcript of a webinar that explains:
- "Crossing the great river"
- "Having somewhere to go"
- "Setting out to bring order"
- Horses
- Carts and chariots
- Compass directions - "finding friends in the southwest"...
- Paths
"I would like to say that I found your 'Journey Imagery' amazingly useful. Although I have used the I Ching on and off for a number of years, I always found the imagery of some hexagrams baffling and stubbornly unyielding.
I feel your 'journey of imagery' has really given me a key, an inspiration and a way. I am very grateful for your very palpable labour of love in helping the book speak to us.
best regards,
Mauricio"

These seven 'journey' images are some of the most common in the whole Yijing - and they're also some of the most common sources of frustration and bafflement for beginners.
"Finding friends in the west and south, foregoing friends in the east and north" - do you take that literally? And if not, what does it mean? (See Part 6, 'Compass directions'!) I Ching translations tend to be either quiet or cryptic (or both) on the subject.
So this audio-video recording and transcript will be seriously useful if you're just starting out with the Yijing. But no matter how experienced you are with Yi, learning more about the historical and cultural background to the oracle can make a huge practical difference to your readings. 'Journey Imagery' provides this, too.
There are photos, diagrams, illustrations, and excerpts from Yijing and the Book of Songs: it all comes together to build a more vivid picture of what these things really meant to the people who wrote the oracle. Which makes for deeper, more nuanced, more satisfying understanding in your readings.
Every phrase or image is illustrated with specific examples from hexagrams and line texts.
(Note: I've edited the recording so that every time we're talking about a particular line or hexagram, the words show up at the top right of the video, like this:

And also, there are plenty of examples of what the phrases and images mean in readings about different topics: 'crossing the great river' in relationships, for example, or 'going northeast' in business.
This is a complete recording of the webinar: slides and text chat as well as the spoken conversation. It's a narrated slideshow, like a Powerpoint presentation, but recorded at the live event. So during something over two hours of discussion, you hear a variety of opinions and insights from the people who attended. All this makes it a lot easier to absorb and more memorable than just words on a page!
This is a live recording, with its 'um's and 'er's and creative tangents, and the sound quality isn't always perfect. It's not just a raw recording, though! I've also edited and presented the material very carefully for easy access and navigation. There are the usual player controls, of course (hit pause, rewind, or drag the slider to whatever point you want), but there's also a clickable contents list: 'crossing the great river', 'having a direction to go', and so on. This means that as well as just watching from beginning to end, you can always go straight to the phrase or image that's come up in your latest reading.
You also get the complete transcript. This has the exact same clickable contents list for easy browsing - no searching around for the part you want. It also has some helpful footnotes including links to useful resources.
