I am interested in understanding the nuclear hexagram and its structure. Which lines make it up and what is its significant in the reading? Any directions or advice would be greatly welcomed ...

thanks, Ace

Strictly saying, there are 5 nuclear hexagrams. But firstly we must get acquainted with nuclear trigrams.

Inner nuclear trigram (hu nei gua): made of lines 2, 3 and 4. EG for hexagram "Meng" (#4), "Youthful Folly", it is Zhen - "Thunder" (001).

Outer nuclear trigram (hu wai gua): made of lines 3, 4 and 5. EG for the same hexagram "Youthful Folly" it is Kun - "Earth" (000).

Then the most known "nuclear hexagram" is made of nuclear trigrams - inner under outer, surely. So for #4 this nuclear hexagram is #24, "Fu", "Return" - Earth in on top, Thunder is at bottom.

Other nuclear hexagrams include "usual" trigrams. There are 4 combinations: inner and nuclear inner; inner and nuclear outer; nuclear inner and outer; nuclear outer and outer.

About meaning - well, I hope other members can answer more correctly.

The meaning of nuclear hexagram in Chinese is always linked to hu4 dong4 (http://afpc.asso.fr/wengu/wg/zhendic.php?q=%A4%AC), something interactive in the total context of an event or situation.

Say, you have 47.
The nuclear hexagram is 37.
Could mean that in a situation of 47, we need a group of friend for support and help.

If you have 45, the nuclear is 53.
In the process of gathering, allow things to take its natural course to grow and develop , i guess! http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/wink.gif

Ace,

Let's take the hexagram to be made up like this:

6
5
4
3
2
1

Then the Nuclear Hexagram is:

5
4
3
4
3
2

So lines 1 and 6 drop away. Lines 2 and 5 become the outermost lines and lines 3 and 4 appear twice in the middle of the Nuclear Hexagram.

- - -

I find it very useful to look at the Nuclear Hexagram because I think that the Nuclear Hexagram gives me a clue as to what's at the heart of the situation being asked about.

I hope that this is useful to you.

Best wishes,

Mick
