If I ever had doubts that the Yi is purposeful, my doubts have been forever laid to rest. I'd like to share my experience.

Last night I was upset about something and after a wine or two, decided to ask about the issue using Hilary's tried and true "What's up with ___?"

The answer I THOUGHT I received was an impossible 52,6 > 53. It was exactly the RIGHT response however and saved me from ripping someone a new one and also gave me needed perspective and advice on my attitude.

This morning I revisited the reading and found the hexagram was actually 53,6 > 39, which was EXACTLY the right description of the situation.

These two answers are also congruent with recent queries on this matter.

So I don't know where the "wrong" answer came from, but it was definitely what I needed when I needed it. And so was the "right" one.

52.6 and 53.6 both include the highest spiritual properties within human nature. Rising above the situation is what was required by the time in order to overcome the obstruction in 39. So either could have applied.

The whole IC is applicable at any moment. Using any sort of 'random' method will derive a hexagram out of which you will derive meaning since all hexagrams are valid. The issue is that the LOCAL context will sort the hexagrams into bestfit/worstfit order. The random process does not guarantee the 'best fit' but can come close - and even if you get the worst fit, ITS properties also apply to the moment ;-)

With a little trust in yourself, you can increase the chances of getting the 'best fit' by asking questions:

... the 'link' of 52.6 and 53.6 is .6 - 'controlled' by 02/23 (yang into yin means a change from a conditional focus to an unconditional focus - or competitive to cooperative)

... and 39 is not just about dealing with an obstruction, it is also about being one - standing up to the mindless 'flow' - going against it.

Overall, using the IC there are no 'wrong' answers - only mis-interpretations, both locally and universally.
