all the lines that lead to 23 involve a dream, a shock, a meeting of a barrier. i chose mostly a classroom scenario to illustrate.
1)a little kid, mom's pet, finds himself shocked by school, deprived of the normal household support, his bubble burst(27.1).
2) he adapts by daydreaming-(4.2). in his fantasies he's a sholar lover kind to fools- and is jarred awake by teacher's sarcastic kindness(but also although its not clear to him at the moment he has begun the dashing of ma and pa as role models, choosing maybe spiderman instead)
3)totally trapped in the classroom deprived of his fantasies and his freedom (52.3)here the refuge of comraderie shimmers
4) in order to feed his needs for self-esteem mental-relief, food, even or rest he has to
become a revolutionary, a cheat a clown taking whatever scraps he can shake from the tree. (35.4) He destruct the picture of his own honorableness and builds a miniature[thats also a commen thread to all these lines]. this metaphor holds true for the requisite of rote-learning as opposed to life learning gathering little bits of facts to ward off imminent disaster.
5) at some point all the fantasies that keep popping up in this sequence have to be re-examined(20.5)- what am i really good for? well at least i can be a[?].
6) even this last is revealed as futile (as in the case of a teacher who has compromised his real world ambitions but still must live with them (through his students)-with and his compromises on a daily basis(2.6)

thats all i meant. . .http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif

When you want a situation to fall apart 23 is a good hex to get.

just some further thoughts.
as these lines show varied fortunes, these changes can be just about being locked into something, maybe something dictated by heaven; the shock factor as an (unnecessary!) human response-as:

27.1 locked into accepting the results of the oracle

4.2 locked into learning

52.3 locked into knowing what is best for everyone, but being unable to change 'em.

35.4 locked into that day-to-day survival thing

20.5 locked ino being oneself

2.6 ?

20.6 locked into letting others be themselves.

Auriel,

Okay, now I get it - everything that leads to 23!

Love the school metaphor (except, I liked school. School is a fine place. http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/specs.gif)

I still don't understand your second list, though: How does it relate to the first list, and what is the numbering scheme about? (A-1-2-3-4 B-5 C-6)
