Hi there:

I'm having some difficulty differentiating them. Can anyone tell me the essence of each? I'm probably missing something big.

Thanks,
Rosalie

Peace,
in my experience, 6 is to do with things like CONFLICT...arguing, contention, opposing viewpoints, complaints and disagreements, controversy..water under sky, demands confronting an authority. There is an adversary to be confronted or compromised with. It could be negotiable and it may not be wrong to try, although sometimes you might just decide to back off. The question to ask oneself might be: IS THIS WORTH FIGHTING FOR?

39 has a mountain in there. There is a firm barrier in place, an obstacle, perhaps immovable...you don't argue with it, and you are only likely to stumble over it if you keep going...you either work around it or retreat until you figure out another way. A lot of my texts refer to this impasse as possibly being internally generated. The question to ask oneself might be : WHY HAVE I CHOSEN THIS PATH?

Hi Rosalie,

It might help to think of Yi as a book of prevailing and countervailing forces. Several hexagrams have to do with resistance, such as 6 and 39.

6 can be seen as a picture of proactive forces which deflect off of one another, sending them in opposite directions.

39 is stubborn too, but instead of being a proactive force, obstinacy is expressed as steadfast, as in ?digging your heels in the ground?.

The way to overcome 6 is with compromise.
The way to overcome 39 is with retreat and self construction.

?Least that?s how I see it.

Thanks for your quick responses.
I asked: What is the next hexagram to focus on - and I got 6 unchanging.

I got 39 changing to 15 when I asked:
What to focus on with my career.

I'm attempting to learn each hexagram in depth as I receive it - using Wilheim, Huang, Anthony and you all. It's been quite a learning experience since I've been dabbling for 15 years superficially.

Thanks,
Rosalie

6 deals with general issues of compromise - as in a court case etc (meet the 'enemy' half way, no more, no less - and so a focus on legal issues etc) its 'opposite' is 36 - uncompromising (one must hide one's light unconditionally)

6 shares space with 47, 36 shares space with 22. (47 and 22 cover issues of enclosure, covering up etc etc)

39 covers going against/with the flow - to stand up against the flow (and so be an obsticle) but also considers the ability to get around obsticles (and so use the flow to bypass). the structural opposite of 39 is 38.

39 shares space with 53, 38 with 54.

The skeletal form of 06 is described by analogy to characteristics of 58 (with self-reflection comes intensity in expression).

The skeletal form of 39 is described by analogy to characteristics of 37 (rigid structure elicits tension release - e.g. the rigid structure in a family etc)

To bring out all of the differences, compare their spectrums (line meaning comments in:
