View Full Version : What line texts do you find meaningful?

I have been unwell recently, and went to the doctor, who, at my suggestion, prescribed a course of a particular drug.
I complained to I Ching yesterday about how I was feeling, and got H16 (moving lines 1,5 and 6), leading to H25. Lines 1 and 6 meant nothing to me, but line 5 shouted at me 'Persistently ill, but still does not die'; so did line 5 in H25 'Use no medicine', implying that I did not really need it. Was I given these hexagrams just for the sake of these two lines?

My hunch (based on the two hexagrams, not the lines) is: something from the psychological or spiritual level is descending and causes temporary troubles on the physical level.
If (if!) that is true medicine is perhaps not required and probably wouldn't help anyway.
If the troubles persist it is maybe a good idea to visit a doctor who has a background in some form of alternative medicine. Regular medical school doctors usually don't understand "these things" ...
Hope this makes sense,
All the best,
Martin

Martin, thanks for the reply. I think (know) you're right about the source of the problem.
I'm still intrigued with the technicalities of the interpretation, though.

I should perhaps add that medicine might help (or may even be necessary) if the physical symptoms are severe.
I don't know, I'm not a doctor ...
Good luck,

Lets see Hexagram 16: 1, 5, 6 = 25
You are far too complacent about this is the wisdom of the first line. By all means, take the medicine. I have always felt that the line statement of 16:5 is a mis-translation.
the fifth speaks of using effort to cure yourself and you must also take care of yourself (that is the wisdom of the 5th line)The persistently ill text probably comes from an historical event but indicates a chronic illness rather than a severe one.
You might even say that the cure will come from your individual efforts.
Line 6 speaks of self delusion and wants you to correct this problem.
Hexagram 25 indicates the problem will be cured eventually but there will be problems with the illness, especially in the beginning.

Thank you, Midaughter. The problem is indeed a chronic one, rather than serious, and there is a definite need for an input from me.
I asked a question about how I was deluding myself and got H57;2,5,6 => 15. The top line talks about being too 'meek and humble' or easy going and losing self-confidence and self respect in the process - there could be substance in this.
