Howdy,

I am curious about something - sometimes one sees excerpts from the wilhelm trnaslation in different contexts. Is it free from copyright? Can anyone publish it . Same question about the legge btw.

The Baynes translation of Wilhelm was first printed in 1950 and is
published in the full text on the net in several places. I can only assume
it's in the public domain by now. The Legge definitely is. I don't know
about the Blofeld.

Is there any way to confirm this?

Try looking here at this Wilhelm website:
The 'e" icon at the bottom of the text is the email to webmaster link
http://www.schoolofwisdom.com/wilhelm.html

I sense an online quoting of Wilhelm/Baynes in the offing.

See this thread (http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=4312). There is still copyright on the English translation, but the German original is in the public domain. Which means that you can make your own translation from the German original and publish it.

A friend of mine wanted to use the Dutch translation of Wilhelm for his Yijing program, but he didn't get permission from the publisher. So I advised him to make his own translation from the German original, and improve it at the same time (giving the program an extra selling point: 'New improved translation!'). That's completely legal.
