Hello folks,
I'm new here. I'm developing another online I Ching, hopefully it's different enough from others to be worth the effort, and would be interested to know if anyone would help test it.

The page currently does not have its introduction, credits or acknowledgements. The random-ness is not activated, so you get a pre-determined set of readings. This is to test the stability of the design.
All comments welcome. If something is not working for you, it would be helpful to know your browser and operating system, and screen size.

In Opera I see monks to the left (like the picture :)) and text:
Test: the coins are set to return Hexagram 2
Ready?
When I click on 'Ready?' it becomes '2 2 2'
Is that what it is supposed to do?

Yes, that is what ios supposed to happen.
The numbers represent the three coins.
Did you notice if anything happened on the right-hand side when you pressed "ready?" ?
If so, press again...
If not, can you tell me about your browser and operating system?
The monks were photographed by a colleague on a vist back home recently: there will be a prominent credit.

Nothing happens on the right-hand side when I click 'Ready?'
Browser = Opera (version 9.24)
OS = Windows Vista (Home Premium)

Same in Internet Explorer, except that I saw a very short something to the right. (perhaps the same thing happens in Opera, but I missed it)

In Firefox I see '2 2 2' and there's animation on the right: all hexagrams with yang bottom lines turn grey, then all with yin bottom lines highlight this one in red... Ah, I see - we arrive at the cast hexagram by a process of elimination, greying out all those just 'disqualified' by the most recent line at each stage.
So it works in Firefox. :)
I could use an indication when I mouseover the hexagrams on the right that they're clickable, though. Since you can't exactly underline a hexagram ;) maybe you could change the mouse pointer to a hand or something?
Isn't cross-browser testing fun?
(It took me about 2 full days' work just to get the navigation and drop-down menus for this forum displaying OK in Firefox and IE7 and - argh - IE6. I don't know what they do in Opera. Unless they work, don't tell me.)

could use an indication when I mouseover the hexagrams on the right that they're clickable
After the six clicks, the left hand side says something like:
"click on the hexagram for the text"... did you see that?
(it should stay onscreen until you mouseover the hexagram, at which stage the instruction should disappear, and the number of the hexagram should appear underneath it.)
If you did see that instruction, apparently it's not prominent enough.
Had trouble with the cursor:hand style, but will try again.
Do you know anyone with IE6?
Martin, I'll double-check Opera and get back to you if my results are different to yours.
Isn't browser testing fun...

Martin, which Internet Explorer are you using?

Thank you Martin, I'm getting a blank right side in IE7 and Opera. Safari(win) seems ok.
This is a new glitch.
I'll go quiet for a while.

Now looks ok to me on winXP in IE7, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Netscape and K-Meleon.
You should get a primary and secondary hexagram, and each hexagram when clicked should give you a text in Chinese and English. You should be able to scroll the text while the hexagrams remain fixed.
Folks with IE6, or on dialup, or some other platform, comments especially welcome.

When I did it it came up 2 2 2, then I carried on and got 6 yin changing lines, was that meant to happen, in Firefox?

Thankyou, yes: you should get hex#2, but there is more.
The random-ness is not active now, so that the mechanics (scrolling, clicking etc) can be tested: you should get hex#2, AND hex#1 as the secondary hexagram.
You should then be able to click on either and get the text of the judgement and the lines, in Chinese and English.
Is this happening for you?
It'll be a little while before it is all randomised. Then you'll get any one of the 64 as your hexagram, with a secondary hexagram if you generated moving lines in the first. If that makes sense...

Sorry, no IE6 on this computer. I used an old machine for testing, but my husband's taken it over since (and probably upgraded the browser). When I last looked, it was still the single most-used browser. This leaves you with two options: make your pages work in IE6, or personally visit everyone who still has it installed and persuade them to change. Option 2 is probably less stressful.
Anyway, delighted to hear you're having such fun...

At the moment the page is set up to utilize Dean Edwards' js library of fixes for IE6, but I'm not confident that they're working for me. I've had one report of OK and another of failure. So more would be good if you happen to know of anyone...
I can't test properly with IE6 and IE7 on the same machine, which is how I'm set up at wrok, and I run a mac at home. It seems ok to me in mac browsers, but again, any feedback is valuable.
If that' doesn't work, there's a fallback in the wings:

You could contact Ewald Berkers of eclecticenergies.com. He fixed the biggest IE6 layout issues my highly expensive web designer left me with (the highlight of which was a right-hand menu that disappeared from the page altogether). I don't know whether he does javascript (he programs in php), but you could always ask.

Many thanks, Hilary.
I'm going to need PHP to deliver the texts, and am just starting to look at the tutorials.
One big javascript-driven page around 400KB, which I can do, looks a bit slow and risky.

This is beautiful! I look forward to seeing the full run, and will definitely return to see how the progress is going.
Perseverance! ;)
