This one is dedicated to my friend, Dobro... :D
We have a tradition in Uruguay that I doubt anybody knows where it started. Could be from the huge Italian influx into our country at the beginning of the 20th Century (our diet is a healthy/unhealthy (oxymoronic, I know...) combination of lots of beef and Spanish (from Spain) and Italian cuisines). Perhaps they brought it with them but I've asked Italians here in the US and they have no clue what I'm talking about. Go figure. On the other hand, it is possible that it was started by the "fresh pasta makers" cartel in Uruguay. Insidious rumors that became a tradition bordering with a superstition. Tasty tradition, I must add.
The tradition is that we eat "Potato Gnoquis", with marinara sauce, on the 29th day of every month... For good luck!! We place a coin under the plate in the hope that we would never lack for money (ironic, believe me...) This tradition reaches almost a frenzy on leap years as they are rare and long apart. So the 29ths of February are supposed to be specially lucky.
So, have potato gnoquis tonight and place your coin under the plate. Next opportunity is on 2012 and everybody know that's the End-of-the-World, so, why bother. Who knows, it may work... :D
