do you think asking about other people we know is possible or does the i-ching actually talk about our relationship with them instead? and how do you ascertain that? thanks.

Sliponshoe,
Readings have been done in regards to political leaders and world events, so readings can be done concerning people we know as well. Unless the topic of the reading involves relationship issues, the results do not necessarily pertain to the relationship. However, interpretation can be colored by our relationship to and attitude towards the person in question, unless the reader is able to be objective. I would be concerned about the motives for doing the reading and whether it is something the person would want us to ask about.

I believe most of the divining in the old days was done by diviners on behalf of someone else - the king and the nobility. It's long been done in a counselor-client relationship.
Your interpretation might be better if you have some sort of relationship with them, but your relationship need not be the subject of your inquiry. I would get the person involved in the reading though - whoever it is (even a mate) there's lots you don't know about 'em.
