Employment crossroads...please help (part 1)

Greetings,

Today I interviewed with a man who owns a mortgage company. I was introduced to this gentlemen through a friend of mine that does mortgages too and has an asphalt/paving company. If I took this job it would be straight commission, and I'm a little concerned about that.

However, after I left the interview (my dear friend went with me to introduce me personally) I said to my friend Frank "Frank, what's stopping us from doing our own business? The mortgage and the paving? What's the real upside if I worked for Kirk?". Frank kind of agreed. What's stopping us from being the masters of our reality? Since Frank is a friend of mine I of course have some concerns in working for him. I don't want to hurt our friendship, and, I believe that I have some valid professional concerns.

Today I also had the opportunity to go out and bid a job with Frank for asphalt. He's very unorganized, forgetful, and a little on the lackadaisical. I must be very careful NOT to judge my friend so critically. Maybe this could be a great thing professionally, or maybe this could be toxic?

I asked the YI Jing the following:

"WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME IF I WORK WITH FRANK IN GROWING HIS ASPHALT AND MORTGAGE BUSINESS'S"

Hex# 55 9-4 changing into Hex# 36

QUESTIONS:

1. What does right as the sun at noon mean?

2. What does thick his screens mean/the curtain is of such fulness (depending on translation) mean?

Then to balance out my questioning I asked Yi:

"WHAT ABOUT WORKING FOR KIRK AT ******* MORTGAGE?"

Hex# 26 6-5 changing into Hex# 9

QUESTIONS:

1. What does the taming power of the great really mean her? How does it apply to my situation?

2. 6-5 I'm lost guys?

3. Hex# 9 also talks about a taming power of the small. Please explain?


As you can see, I'm at a crossroads in where I should go next in my career? ***maybe I'm confused because I'm asking the wrong question(s)? If any of you have suggestions on how I can approach the Yi Jing in my questioning please let me know!!!!

Conditions are unusual, allowing you to see what you seldom see. In this case, Frank's a kind of dark horse in some way, but working with him is fortunate.

This is good news too. It involves something which is ordinarily dangerous being rendered harmless.

About your first reading -

I think the key phrase is 'being the masters of our reality'. This is very much what Hexagram 55 is all about, and it is a profound truth about running your own business. The 'master' becomes responsible for the marketing, the customer service, the vehicle maintenance, the accounts, the tax returns, the supply of printer paper and milk for coffee... Not to mention the small question of whether you're making money. There can be an element of overwhelm in Hexagram 55!

Being 'right as the sun at noon' is probably a mistranslation for 'making the Yi sacrifice at noon' - this was the offering you made to the earth before you marched out to battle. (Information from Steve Marshall's 'Mandate of Heaven' - see LiSe's summary of the story here (http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/hex_49-64/55-56.htm) - strongly recommended!) So this is the moment when you take on the responsibility for yourself and make your decision.

The thick screens, or what-have-you, are probably a reference to a solar eclipse, being 'screened' from the sun, so that you can see the Dipper at noon. The point is basically that when you are 'in the dark', you can still see to orientate yourself and work out where you're going - maybe with exceptional clarity.

So you are looking at your potential ally and partner in this - what the oracle calls your 'hidden lord'. In the Yi's words he's literally a 'barbarian' - ! - well, at least we can say he's not very similar to you and doesn't work in the ways you're used to. (Does he really want his business to grow?) Such an alliance is likely to be tricky, to require discretion and not always sharing every insight that comes to mind. But nonetheless, Yi says that this encounter means 'good fortune.'

If this were my reading I would think cautiously about how you and Frank would work together in the long run. I'm sure you would get on exceptionally well helping each other out on individual projects, but as a long-term partnership it could be awkward.

If you wanted to delve further into the reading, there might be questions about what you're seeing in Frank, why he seems forgetful, laid-back or disorganised to you, or why these things are alarming, or why you feel as if you're 'judging' him.

55 => 36 highlights issues of clear and unclear, visible and hidden. And there is an element of how the momentary and the long-term don't always match, and if you are to survive and prosper, you must be aware of that. What you can "see" by the light of a momentary bright enthusiasm (or a momentary eclipse) is a different slice of reality than what you can see day after day. And it is not just about what you can see either, it is about being seen. Sometimes being in the spotlight is a good thing, sometimes you need a little protection.

26 => 9 highlights issues of big and small, values, motivations, the skills of "herding." I've never made this association before, but it gets me to think, hmmm, straight commission is perhaps like tending animals? They don't exactly *have* to do anything you say, it is only in the totality of the way you relate to them that cooperation happens, that they begin to "read" you, and you them, and your will and their will begin to align.

If the two options seem similarly promising to you, perhaps the readings are suggesting that the partnership with Frank would teach you more about risks and protection, and the job with Kirk would teach you more about values and devotion.

Can you expand on this for me? I'm thinking he's strong like a horse, yet, he carries with with a little sadness?
