Looking for help interpreting a reading about a sticky situation

I recently came back into contact with an old friend that I haven't seen for ten years. I quickly came to feel that I had to confess to him something that I did ten years ago. I knew it was going to upset him deeply, and make him think very much less of me, but I felt strongly that we had no chance of recreating a meaningful friendship unless he knew all the facts.

He's said little in response - it's clear that he is very upset. He seems to have gone away for a while. But he has also emailed me once or twice, and seems to be looking for me to do something to make him feel better about the situation.

I asked for the best way to respond, and got 19 (Nearng) unchanging, from which I infer that I need to be the grown-up here, and to approach this from as spiritual a perspective as possible, rather than trying to achieve any particular outcome.

So I then asked what I could do at this time to help my friend, assuming that it was appropriate for me to do so.

29, Repeating chasm

I would love some help interpreting this. It looks to me as though I may be being told that it's best for him to be far away from me right now. What do you think?

I would agree with your interpretation. He probably needs the space to digest what you told him and come to his understanding of it. and this may be his task alone.
The 19 suggests to me that you stand by, within reach, with care and openness. I wouldnt ignore his emails. be gentle and available, but just not about trying to fix it.

It seems that you were foolish to tell him as some secrets are best left secret.

Hex 19 Says that you need to contact him, and show that you are sorry and you do indeed care.

Hi Artemis.I agree that #19 would suggest trying right *now* to make the best of the time and be kind and thoughtful.If he's emailing you he's not saying "no" completely, right?And 59 line 6 talks about avoiding painful negative thoughts.
I suppose it might mean leaving him to digest this whole thing, but I'm also thinking it means do not think about the past anymore.Be his friend now.Making an amends doesn't have to mean telling all--but since you have, or almost all anyway,I think maybe move on from there now that the apology is done.
It's today that counts, no?Be who you are now, not who you were back then when you did whatever it was.If your friend needs to tlak, explain as best you can, expres your regret but move on from that place both emotionally and spiritually.
What Bamboo said makes sense to me--be gentle and available and not just about that situation

Artemis, forgot to include H.29, which 59 changed to.
I think it too means the situation is difficult, but if you and he talk again, which you probably will soon, move though the difficult spots like water filling up holes and then moving on.Be honest and real--don't effect an attitude or pretend to feel anything--just be yourself.
Again--maybe it is your friend experiencing the 59 line 6, but you too should not be stuck in the negative of the past, you know?:-)

I wonder whether, in the second reading, the primary hexagram and line may represent his current situation, and the relating hexagram my influence. It's not the way I've looked at primary and relating before, but I think it would make a certain amount of sense in this context.

Artemis, I hadn't thought of it in just that way--but sure--that just might be so.
*Especially* if that' what your gut tells you.I've found that answers I've received over the yrs are rarely on just one level alone. So, it is not strange or unheard of that you may be the influence represented by Hex.29, as well as both #59 and #29 pertaining to you alone,*and* to you and he!:)
