View Full Version : We're moving!

News from that techno-pit where I've been lurking for the past few weeks: this website will be changing servers any day now! You don't need to change your bookmarks: the URL will be exactly the same. But the move will probably mean that this forum will be out of action for a few days. So if you arrive and find you can't post, please just come back in a few days and try again. Thank you for your patience!

Technical explanation (or something) for anyone who cares: not only is the website changing servers, but so is the domain name. This takes a couple of days, and it spreads across the internet gradually. So for a time, we'll all go to the same internet address, but some of us will be sent to the old site and some to the new one. This would make conversations rather difficult!

So as soon as I set the transfer process in motion, I'll be turning off message posting at the old site. This means I can take an up-to-date backup of all the messages to install on the new site (barring technical hitches...) and no-one's pearls of wisdom will be lost. (Unless you post a message in the few minutes between my running a final backup and turning off posting - sorry.) After a while, all our ISPs will get the message and start sending us all to the new server.

I'm afraid I don't know how long it'll be before everything gets back to normal. It seems no-one can tell me: estimates range from 2 days to 2 weeks. The I Ching says Hexagram 8 about the move in general (much as I thought - do all the backups before I even mention moving to my current web host!) and 15 changing to 24 about moving this forum. Well, that soothes my frayed nerves somewhat. Hopefully, after a bit more humble toil, the 'Uniting words' will Return without a hitch. See you at the new server!

Well, it looks like we've moved. Far faster than I expected, too. Now, let's see if it all works...

Please feel free to use this page to mention any problems you have. I'm trying to fix the links on the email notification at present. Hopefully very soon I'll actually have time to read for someone. Something to look forward to!

Hi Hilary,

I was able to get to the site, read and post yesterday morning (5/31), but in the afternoon, from a different computer, I could not get here at all. I tried using the address in my computer, and also links from 2 search engines. That was, I guess 1:00am today (6/1), your time.

Now, here I am again from the first computer. I can see the site, and started writing this message. When I tried to "preview" the first time, I got a site not found message.

The second time I previewed, I got through. Now, let's see if it will preview again...

OK, that works...

But now I notice that your clock is not on UK time, it's on US eastern time... Hmmm...

Ok, now attempting to post...

Hi Willow,

Your problems getting through were actually due to 'routing problems' (so the new web host say) and just for once, not anything I'd done!

They seem to have fixed it all now.

As for the clock - oops. Off to admin to try to put that right!

Ah. Not spooky so much as a technical limitation. Most readings have lines changing in the primary hexagram, so there's a different hexagram created to put in the relating hexagram box. Where there are no lines changing, the program indicates this by showing the same hexagram again in the relating hexagram slot. In a way it makes sense - a single-hexagram answer does mean it's worth reading twice!

BTW, welcome to the site!http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/i_ching_discussion/clipart/happy.gif

(Just an experimental message, this, to see if anything works. My brain was not built for this, definitely.)

and another experiment

Hi Janette,

Thank you for the reminder! I did know that archiving was something I should be doing, but it hadn't occurred to me to wonder what the Friends' Area must look like to new arrivals. Rather fossilised, I agree.

One thing I can't do in this forum software, unforunately, is to make the most recent posts show at the top of the page. So the best solution is indeed to create an 'archive' folder so that there's no longer so far to scroll down.

I've compromised, since people do revisit their posts to let us know the outcome (and that is a very valuable contribution!), and archived everything earlier than September. Subdividing the archive by hexagram sounds like a wonderful idea, but I'm afraid it isn't really practicable (with many different hexagrams on each page). Your best bet for finding a particular hexagram is still the forum search engine - see the left-hand menu.

I look forward to hearing more from you http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif
