If reincarnation is true, then we?re not who we are right now. Neither will we be who we become. If we are not who we are now, nor will become what we will be, who are we?

Now I am going to have a stab at it - a quick guess - Don't look at my next post here if you are going to cast for an answer.

IMHO, that premise is flawed. Unless you are talking about bodies, not about a soul/self entity, then your, let's call it 'higher self', remains constant throughout eternity. You 'lower self', your present consciousness, is unaware of the other one. This is the consciousness that renews itself at birth.
In reality, however, you are what you have always been and will be until the end of time.
Now, as to how and when the two selves share the information of a present life and thus climbs another step in the evolution of that soul, such is a matter for some enlightened guru to disclose... http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif

perhaps the following passage on "evolutionary astrology" will shed a little more light on the issue you are wondering about. you will find the whole article here: http://consciousevolution.com/metamorphosis/0403/evolvastro0403.htm
"Evolutionary astrology depends on the concept of evolution in a larger context than the life of an individual human being, and much of it depends specifically on the idea of reincarnation. Like many spiritual concepts, however, reincarnation can be a limiting belief if it is taken too literally as a linear succession of physical embodiments by a single soul. There are actually many ways of conceiving the ideas of soul evolution that are not dependent on such a literal view of reincarnation. For example, Dane Rudhyar remained agnostic on the idea of sequential embodiment, and leaned toward a ?genetic memory? view of reincarnation. Another approach holds that since time itself is not an absolute, it is quite possible that one?s ?past life? is in the future ... that incarnations can skip around freely in time, rather than following one after another. Yet another view is that since we are all connected at the deeper levels of being, our collective unconscious holds memories of all lifetimes of everyone ? thus our valid ?past life? memories can actually be memories of anyone who ever lived!"

Hi Luis,
Ahh, but two selves? I?m still questioning one.
For example, this talk of astrology on another thread, when combined with the reincarnation question, presents the question I?ve posed.
Right now ?I am? a Gemini, and all the attributes I?ve normally considered as being me can not be me if in my next life I am born under a different sign. Even if I?m born under the same sun sign, it will be affecting differently and so I will be someone else with an entirely different personality. So then, I am not my personality, now or then. What does that leave? A spirit? What traits can a spirit have if it has no personality, no animation?

Hi Dharma,
Genetic memory does pose an interesting possibility. It would also tie into the whole ancestral rotation idea. And it would establish a constant in it?s fabric, which can then be identified as collective self.
I've save the link for a read. Thanks!

This reminds me of a past life regression I recall hearing, where a Buddhist monk came back as an accountant. Maybe he forgot why he became a monk, or decided he?d fare better in the west as an accountant. Or maybe spiritual evolution isn?t what we typically think it is.

Higher self still sounds seperate from lower self to me. Two selves. I dunno. So then the lower self dies and what, becomes a different self? Then it was never true self to begin with. So we're back to only one self, and its not the temporal one, if in fact there really is self, aside from manifestation.

Alas, perhaps that is your real quest in life... http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/biggrin.gif
For me, what I said, makes perfect sense. Of course, it is just an abstraction and something that does not bring me any closer to enlightenment but, on the other hand, it makes me feel I have a focus point.
You appear to think that I said that there are two or more separate selves when in fact, what I tried to say is that the higher and lower are just two aspects of a single entity. The parallels with Yi dualism should be obvious.
Much the same way your senses are part of your persona and are the tools for interaction with the outside world, and the feedback inlets for your mind, the lower self is to the higher self what your senses are for your mind: experience collecting tools
Said experience, thru many incarnations, is what advances the higher self to the graduation goal of "non-reincarnation".
Well, the way I understand it, those are my Cliff Notes on the matter... http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif

I think we are light. I think we live as an illusionary self-created form, but not meant necessarily in a negative way (that would be dualistic thinking). I think this which we call self is as a cloak which covers light, and which reinvents itself each lifetime. (Therefore it is not truly self.) I think when we become clear then light shines through.

Candid, your question has been addressed by the Buddha. In his view (someone more knowledgeable please correct me), there is no entity or anything resembled to a soul that survives death. What there is is a cause-consequence relation (just like with everything else), so that the new life is dependant-originating from the last.
But the question you raise of connecting astrology with reincarnation has been on my mind for a long while, and is indeed my most convincing argument to believe in reincarnation. Let me explain.
I have noticed parallels between the horoscopes of people and their descendants. We all know that our children inherit many traits of our personality, not merely physical aspects but psychological ones. Having a child has given me the chance to realize this much deeper, because if it can be argued that it is the education (the social part) that contributes for similar psychological traits between parent and child, it is on one hand incomprehensible then, how some children are so different from their parents, sometimes even from their brothers who had a similar education, and on the other, I have noticed some common traits in my child displayed at a very young age, much earlier, I would say, than any social influence I could have had on him.
And if it seems logical that some personality traits can be inherited via genetic transmission (which, although presupposing that some of our personality has a genetic origin, is easily acceptable by modern science), it becomes more intriguing when I realize that the astrological aspects that are responsible for my specific trait, are also present in my child?s chart. It seems that astrology agrees with genetics, but how could this be so if we didn?t chose where and when we are going to be born? Its not enough that I chose a couple of parents that will give me my genetical personality, it seems I must be born from them at a specific time and place so they give me my astrological personality as well?
Do you see the paradox? (I mean, am I explaining myself?)
Somehow I have this theory that there is an astrological continuity in our reincarnations, and the traits we inherit from our parents are themselves the consequence of an astrological descendance.
candid
March 11th, 2004, 03:31 PM
Arien, I feel much as you do about the logic of genetic memory and it's interwoven fabric with ancestors. I can also agree that there is continuity from lifetime to lifetime, or at least it makes sense to me. Funny how much we can learn by observing children, especially our own.
I'd love to continue this conversation but my obligation to support this cloaked form (chuckle) demands I work now. Gonna be a long weekend working a Home & Garden Show booth.

i see the lower self as one consciousness that, at present, is the one that we identify with but reflects only one aspect of the many that go towards the total composition of one's personal whole -the higher self.
thus, the development of the higher self is highly dependent on the individual refinements of all the lower selves. and each lower self is refined through its own unique focus/lifetime (as in reincarnation)
i see it all happening right now, all at the same time.

i like the idea you present Arien http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif (btw, being me is a very sexy experience and there is, no doubt, a long waiting line... LOL)
seriously though (or as seriously as one can get about a speculative topic) even when the "one single multifaced entity is fully experiencing itself", i don't believe that any of the lower aspects that go towards composing it, ever loses themselves inside the whole. meaning: i expect that each one [of us] is capable of attaining a full awareness of their individual selves within the Whole should we succeed in realizing the entire refinement process.

Arien:
"there is no entity or anything resembled to a soul that survives death."
I haven't suggested there is no entity. Obviously we are entities or we couldn't be having this discussion. What I am saying is that this which we call entity is not truly self, any more than I am my shirt. I have not said there is no soul either. If I were to identify my soul I'd say, it is the cumulative traits acquired during many manifestations of self. Primal beings believe that a self photograph steals one's soul. But the photograph is not, nor can it be, a soul, its only a photograph. I don't believe I am my shirt or my photograph, but I don't deny there is a shirt and photograph, which we can call entity. But neither of these is my self.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread, but just wanted to say that it seems to me our astrological chart only shows us the mask we put on for this particular incarnation. Our rising sign especially tells us the mask we wear in front of others. The whole chart is a mask though, and only part of the overall person gets filtered through it. In our deeper selves, higher selves if you will, we are all things.

I have found that the study of my natal chart has done more for my awareness of 'me' than all those thousands of LSD doses I took in the 60's put together. (Wow, now theres an ideahttp://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif )

Oh, most assuredly, kind sir. Yeah, there was this book that came out in...oh..about 1969, called "LSD-The Age of Mind". There was a chapter in it that dealt with accomplishing certain skills utilizing the psychoactive. The example used was typing and I wanted to see if it worked, so I tried it and it DID! Learned to touch-type in ONE night! Then I applied the technique to smoking, stopped in ONE night, NO withdrawal, No craving, just stopped. (Started again about 2 years later when I realized that all those 'benefits' I was supposed to experience just weren't happening!) This was around 33 years ago, I might give it a try again. *grins* *cough* *hack* http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/biggrin.gif

Hi-
Training behavior into 2nd nature on LSD really works. I had two friends (aged 20) who used to practice bowling on 300 mcg (!!!) doses (maybe 5 street hits nowadays). Both bowled 289's in this state. One of these guys saw the Magnificent Seven and stayed up all night on acid until he could quick draw a holstered Colt 45 revolver between two clapping hands. Their friend here just sorta quietly went mystical (in a scientific sort of way).

Well, my plan is to make this my last incarnation. Last time I checked I was about 650 years behind schedule in accomplishing this, but still trying. Not that I wouldn't care to be Dharma, don't get me wrong. But I care more to be me. I like that verse in Revelations. "to him that overcometh...He shall go no more in nor out." (How the church would chortle if they understood that that was a reference to incarnating into a physical body.) And I wouldn't be surprised if Dharma is working on the same thing. (Don't mean to speak for you though Dharma.) I do understand Dharma is working on her energy field, and maybe, just maybe, she will make it in this lifetime too. Maybe we all will. One example... Sitting in a house with some friends... I looked at my watch and simply announced, 'hey two old palls are comming round and I got up to make a meal for them as they lived a very long way away.
20 minutes later they arrived... banging on the door and shouting 'surprise'. I had not even spoken to them in a year... Curious thing time.

Never had anything but positives out of the literally thousands of trips. Got a lot of hang-ups left over from childhood/teenage years straightened out during my twenties. It certainly taught me to accept myself as I was and take things one step at a time. Also had some incredible out of body experiences. Found that meditating on the Tarot trumps while under the influence was the quickest way to assimilate the symbolism. Haven't tried it with the YI simply because I no longer have a reliable source. Of all the recreational drogas I have tried,(and that would probably be ALL of them), acid, mushrooms and mescaline are truly theraputic. Also used it for baseball when I was 25, simply incredible, I could stand there in the batters box and watch the pitcher throw the ball in slow motion, and then watch the ball approach in slow motion. Let's see, do I want to put it in left or right field? *chuckles*

Tonight sun and moon entered Aries at almost the same moment, which is quite rare. Something like a double moment of spring.
Moment to ask for this year, what should I know - do - be - the allover general picture.

Hi Arien,
Was re-reading this thread and realized I had somehow missed your post on child/parent astrological connection. Although I have always believed that one choses one's parents, I hadn't heard about the astrological connection before. Do you have any links/data on this philosophy that you could share? Thanks in advance. http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif

Leonard,
the only book that i know of on the subject is called "The Astrology of Fate" by Liz Greene. i thought it was out of print but i see that new copies of it are still available out there. if you are interested in this subject then this book is definitely worth a read. if you come across any other titles would you let me know? thanks http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif

thanks! for the "Barney" hugs, Leonard - combined with my lumbar-support belt i'm truly feeling much better these days http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/happy.gif in fact, when my little nephews first saw it on me (the belt, that is) they told me it looked like the WWF "trophey", so i do my best imitation of Razor Ramone when i'm wearing it just to crack up them up http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/I_Ching_community/clipart/wink.gif never imagined how hysterically funny this situation could become...

I have noticed though, that posting at a critical mass point can be very transformative.<!-/Quote-!><HR SIZE=0></BLOCKQUOTE> here's a passage from an astrology book [The Gods of Change] i was reading last night. it made me think of what you said here.
"In 1977, the Nobel Prize for chemistry was awarded to a Belgian physical chemist, Ilya Prigongine, for his theory of dissipative structures, and his work scientifically demonstrated what the ancient Chinese knew very well; that stress and crisis play a critical role in the process of transformation. Like wei-chi, the Chinese word for crisis, Prigogine's results support the idea that breakdowns and upheaval in our lives are also opportunities for something new to happen... ...the breakdown of the system makes it possible for it to break through to a whole other way of organizing itself. Such is the dynamic nature of growth and the nature of transformation."

Hi Dharma
Right now I am listening to an interview with the authors of "Pistis Sophia" I find it very, very fascinating. It relates to the Nag Hammadi library books. Also about the relationship with Mary Magdalene, etc, etc, etc. They also just now mentioned the Genesis six text, about the mating of humankind with angels. This is something you might find very very interesting. Go to coasttocoastam.com Wednesday's show, and you can find out more about it.
