It is beyond my capacity to digest the meaning of every saying
without the assistance of a friend who has studied the appropriate literature
for years. On the other hand, he has difficulty in seeing clearly
so I can point out the correct phrases in their order. Another friend,
whom I don’t see too often, likes to take part in our discussion.
It helps him to reach conclusions he could never reach on his own.

We shall meet in the room at the back of the Community Hall
where they store brooms and such like. We will study
for an hour before the sun sets. The passage, this time,
will be from the Book of Changes: hexagram 45:

“The King approaches his temple:”

Can you remember the official who came by the other day-
the short man with the horn rimmed spectacles. Well,
his proposal is for a new building where this one stands.
Light and vision beyond his immediate interests
will exemplify the facility where adherents of all creeds
will be welcome. All manner of activities,
including ours, granted extra room

a place for worship

somewhere for collectors to show precious items,
a compassionate heart to help people through trauma,
residents to express anger at inordinate decisions

a refuge for children threatened by unhealthy advances.

He is, at this moment, widening the road

it will bring more people to the area
and some who may be interested in joining our group.
Who knows, we may even attract a scholar
who could plumb the wisdom of the Yi
and set us free from unenlightened contemplation.

“It furthers one to see the Great Man.
To bring offerings creates good fortune.”

We shouldn't hesitate in contacting a prestigious school now.
We could invite someone with high credentials
to take part in a discussion

we must be prepared to clean our clothes, though,
and bring out that old bottle of wine stored for special occasions.

We could send some notes

the importance of disseminating ideas
to even the lowliest of citizens should suffice.

“It furthers one to undertake something:”

Whatever is born out of the image
will in turn be presented to an audience
who’ll feel they've been drawn together
in the one will and the one momentum

they’ll give up their time to help complete the project.

“The superior man renews his weapons
in order to meet the unforeseen:”

Be careful on your way home
because we will separate
and go our different ways

already the colours of the day are fading.

Although we have found the meanings in words
we must live them out
for the joy in each other’s company,
overflowing into the night,
could leave us vulnerable
to danger impinging on high hopes
and star filled eyes.
