Howdy. I am a new member to this site. I have been lurking this site for a couple of years, and everyone's insight seems very helpful. I have usually been able to figure out what the oracle tells me on my own, but I have recently been confounded by a reading.

My question: "What should I be doing to be living a fulfilling and meaningful life?" The oracle's response is Hex 6 with lines 4 and 5 changing to Hex 4.

I know that Hex 6 is about conflict, in my case internal conflict, but I'm just not sure what to make of this.

Well, thanks in advance for any help.

Hex 6 covers a lot of ground but its main focus is NOT on conflict but on formal compromise (as compared the uncompromising nature of its opposite - 36)The trigrams give us "with containment comes single-mindedness" and covers the use of legal issues etc as an example of the conflict involved in compromise. That said, in its EXTREME focus it covers the play of the emotions of anger and rejection, self-respect and protection.

04 covers putting on a mask (as compared to 49s removal of such) and so an emphasis on socialisation.

As to your question, all hexagrams apply, it is the local context that will elicit a particular that best fits the situation.

I don't call 6 conflict, I call it contending. Contending is something along the lines of stating your case, quite possibly with a sense of grievance, cuz you feel you have a righteous case to state. It can be like somebody saying to God 'Damn! What am I supposed to *do* here? I've tried everything I can think of!' There's no conflict in that, just exasperation or impatience and some kind of personal agenda.

4's about learning stuff newbie-fashion, and having to deal with being in a state of not knowing what you want to know. :)

Put 'em together: rather than happily accepting the way your life's unfolding and trusting it, you're lobbying for a known direction, and that means you're gonna hafta be satisfied with baby steps right now.

6.4 talks about not being able to carry out the process of contending, and 6.5 says that carrying out said process is really fruitful.

Polarized again. :D

If it was me, I'd put the emphasis on 4. It's springtime for newbies, in other words. That means accepting that you don't know what you want to know, and keeping it simple - life's your teacher. So, what's life teaching you right now? What are those baby steps I mentioned earlier?

6.4 can I think often be about not fitting in with what society deems a useful or happy life. You have your own path, it may be difficult, it may not seem rewarding by societies standards, but it is surely yours. This does give rise to conflict until one accepts this is ones way regardless of the fact it doesn't actually fit neatly into anyones boxes..if one accepts this theres more peace. 6.5 may be around you challenging what is put to you as the 'right way' to live...doing your own thing. In hex 4 it can be pretty much unknown territory, you make your way as you go. Just being you you cannot actually go off your path..the conflict comes from thinking one must perform to societies values and so on..interesting Chris mentioned compromise/ socialisation. i'd think thats where the contention was...and you did ask 'what should i be doing...' and i think 6.4 questions that should and kicks it out of the window...afterall whose 'should' is it ? Rejecting this 'should' you find peace (6.4) to make waves (6.5) as if they were the first waves of their kind ever to me made.....(4) in this particular way

i hope that makes sense..or that you can find some sense among it somewhere

Walk Away and Win on Your Own Terms

My question: "What should I be doing to be living a fulfilling and meaningful life?" The oracle's response is Hex 6 with lines 4 and 5 changing to Hex 4.
The two moving lines in this reading, while not exactly opposites, point to two different approaches to conflict. In line 4, you learn to walk away from conflict that is unwinnable, and to have your own agenda, not to get sucked into arguing somebody else's argument.

But Line 5 points to an ability to use arguing to begin a process that leads to good fortune. This is arguing from your own purpose, for something you want.

What a fun answer, it gave me a yichuckle. What a great compliment to 6 4 is.

You need to question authority and work constructively to understand what's going on.

I'm guessing, you probably don't like confrontation, and tend to give in easily?

Hello, and thank you all for your responses, they've all been very helpful. I guess what the oracle is telling me is that I need to stop listening to what others think I should be doing and to start doing what I feel is right for me, and that it will open up a whole brand new world of the unknown by doing so.

No, I don't like confrontation. I think, now that I have had the help from you folks, that the oracle may be reminding me of what my life was like when I was younger and how my mom always called all the shots in my life. I really felt like I couldn't make any of my own choices and decisions; she made them for me. I've always really resented that (resented both her for doing that to me and myself for not standing up to her at the time about it). It's time to let go of mom's voice saying that I can only do this and that if she says it's ok. And it's time to let go of that resentment. I think it's 6.4 that says that the person just has to accept that that is what fate had planned and nothing could have been done about it.

Again, thank you all for your help.

Maybe the inner contention/conflict arises out of that 'should' word in your question. Maybe the contention arises between your mom's voice and your own voice, each of which is telling you what you 'should' do. That would explain the duality of the two moving lines in your hexagram.
