I drew Hex 11 on both sides asking why would my friend and i not be able to meet up together in january in new york.

H.11 GREATNESS is short but possitive, although all interpretation depends upon what do you consider GREAT / BIG and what SMALL / LITTLE.

泰‧小往大來‧吉亨 (1)​

泰 tai4: peaceful / most /grand / greatness
小 xiao3: small / little / few / young
往 wang3: to go / towards
大 da4: big / great
來 lai2: to come / to arrive
吉 ji2: lucky / fortunate
亨 heng1: celebration / feast / sacrifice

Amy, I think the key angle, as Charly says, is what can be considered "Great" here. Isn't your friend married to somebody else? In which case, "great" could be finding a way for you to move on from this and prosper in a different relationship?
