Hi
Last night I took the diagnostic test on webmd.com. I found that I should go back to taking medication. The symptoms of this illness are getting worst especially with the ongoing stress I am going through. So I asked the following question:

Will Citalopram help me regain my calm and serenity in this hard times?

I got hexagram: 22.1.2.5 > 57
I used Hilary's online reading program.

I was surprised to get 22. I have no idea what this hexagram is advising me to do, especially two days ago I welcomed the thought of me dying. My excuse to live is that I have a job to finish, which is getting my teen age kids where they need to be.

Here is my interpretation base on intuition:
This med will help function in the world and see its beauty
line 1: exercise/walk/move
line 2: Take care of your appearance
line 5: bad thoughts are taking over your head. May suggest talk therapy to help me see beauty in life.

57 says even if I prescribe to the advice of the first hexagram I will still have bouts of depression and I have to fight this like a warrior. 57.1

I am not sure if I am interpreting this the right way. My energy and creativity are very low right now. I would appreciate your input on this interpretation.
Thank you

Lydia

If I could put it into a few sentences, this is what I think Yi is saying to you, Lydia.

Think of what you say to people about yourself -- how you present yourself and your dilemmas to the world. What pictures do you draw about yourself and your life? What about your self-talk -- what you say to yourself about yourself.

How do you think your kids would feel if they knew you had wanted to die a few days ago? They would be devastated and marked for life if anything happened to you. You need to get a more healthy perspective about your life ...

You are disappointed by the people you know and wish you could get to know nicer people, but sometimes the grass only looks greener on the other side of the fence.

If I were you, I'd give top priority to the well-being of my children and try not even to think about myself and all my disappointments, Lydia. It's very important to your children that you maintain a firm hold on your moods and thought patterns.

You think something important is missing from your life ...

The Yi has not actually said whether or not you need to take this medication. It has pointed out to you that life gets hard sometimes, that we all have to speak politely even when we don't feel well, and that the grass often looks greener on the other side of the fence ...

If your symptoms persist you should see your family doctor or a specialist. Don't try to diagnose yourself with webMD. Your health is too important for your children, so don't play around with it.

I think your main problem is spending too much time thinking about your problems. Replace those dark thoughts you're having with thinking about your family instead. Don't let your life get out of control just because you have troubles. We all have troubles ... (me, too). If your troubles get any worse, please do see a doctor. You cannot rely upon yourself or webMD for an accurate diagnosis. :)

Hope this has been helpful.

I think your reading is very good except for the 57.1. Traditionally the Judgment is read:

57 Judgment
The Gentle. Success through what is small.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
It furthers one to see the great man.

Suggests you should see a doctor and may expect major changes by attending to the small details of life.

I read your words of encouragement and tears started flowing because you did remind me that I am not the only one having difficult times, I am not alone in this. and thank you for your support and your interpretation.
What do I say about myself to others, pretty much nothing. I keep to myself most of the time. Given the circumstances, I retreated from all conflicts with my runaway husband. I grief the loss of so many thing especially myself. I am not tuned in to the outside at this time.
I am polite with everyone, work well with people but I slowly drifted from the public life to being alone in a state of isolation. Which is not a bad thing I think but I noticed that my energy went down instead of being calm and serene.
You are right I have to see my family doctor to check on these symptoms I have.
I still not sure what hexagram 57 is telling me?
Any idea.

Thanks for your reply. I am having hard time attending to small details because I am dealing with major life issues such as being a single mom for two teenage boys (17 & 19). I can't believe the yi is saying that to me. It is my weakest point, ginnie also said I should not spend too much time ever thinking I do that a lot instead so may be attending to small details in my life is a good thing such as going to the doctor. I appreciate your support Pocossin.

The Yi says

Success through what is small.

My interpretation is that small successes create momentum for tackling larger problem. Any little thing that is done well improves morale for dealing with bigger problems.

Thank you for clarifying that. I will have to think about what a small success that may create momentum . I may have to set reachable goals, and work toward achieving them. Here is one them, I think it is important: I would like to succeed in: how Do I overcome the feeling of helplessness? so I asked the Yi.

I got hexagram 13.1.6 > 31

No idea what it means especially the changing lines for 13
I would appreciate your input.

hi Lydia

I think the obvious thing here is that -as mentioned by both Ginnie and Pocossin before me- if you feel the burden is too much you should seek help . . I think your answer is about the kinds of help you can turn to . .

In my eyes right now 57 looks like all those things that emanate from deep within us and the invisible but real effects they create -the smell of our breaths, the sound of our thoughts, our sweat; 22 about how you can work with them: either cover them up and accept there's not much more you can do or take on the challenge of working from within with your small reservoir of strength and help it grow into something bigger, stronger, solid . .
You haven't shared whether its been long since you quit medication or how bad things can get for you, or if you are i the process of unraveling the yarns of your troubles but if I tried to read the lines for you I 'd translate them as

1: don't take the easy way out, use your feet(=your power to carry yourself), connect with the ground of your life, with earth's mothering instinct, don't get discouraged by the mud and the dirt, they are the 'diamonds on the soles of your shoes'

2: look at how things in your life move and try to find their underlying causes; no need to go very deep at first, just things like what drains your energy most, how do you contribute in that or how you allow it to happen, and then start clipping them in small ways to give them the shape you want -like we trim the bushes in the garden or mown the lawn or help a growing plant by using sticks to help it grow straight -that plant is you :) Try introducing in your routine small things that give you joy, small breathes of fresh air, 5' looking at the sky, reading a book before sleep or something like that . . maybe try flower essences (I have no personal experience with them but many people say they've helped them in working thru anxiety)

5: allow yourself to be proud of every small improvement you make: a cocoon of silk may be a meagre thing but the thread it contains is one of the strongest and more precious there can be; take pride in your accomplishments however small they might look, use them to weave for yourself a new pattern, one you can count on because it's effect won't fade away and which you can pass on to your kids, a small but priceless gift

(looks a little like a pill, no? only this could be one you produce yourself instead of consuming . .)

hope some of this has been of help,
wishing you all the best!

edit: just seen your comment to Ginnie and Pocossin
came across this and this today . . take a look

I still not sure what hexagram 57 is telling me?

One meaning of hexagram 57 is: Healing.

As Pocossin said above, the text of 57 says to see your doctor.

Regarding 22.2: If I were you, I would be careful about how you represent your recent thoughts about dying when you speak with your doctor. If your doctor thinks you are suicidal, he will be forced by law to call an ambulance so that you can be taken to a hospital for observation.

Every single human being wishes at times to be in Heaven rather than still on earth. You can run into problems saying things like this to a physician, however.

Get into motion more. Going outside your home and just speaking with a few people every day would have a very beneficial effect on you. :)

Attending to the small things means to me paying all the bills, cooking the meals, picking the clothes up off the floor and dusting the furniture, going shopping for groceries, keeping an eye on your budget and not buying things you don't really need, making sure the boys are doing their homework, cooking nutritious meals and not letting your children eat junk, either. Taking out the garbage, getting repairs done when repairs need doing. Not letting old newspapers and other junk accumulate inside your home. Sewing sometimes and sometimes just going outside and talking a nice walk, speaking with the neighbors.

There are certainly a lot of little tasks involved with everyday life that must be done. Otherwise, you know, they can build up and become a terrible pile of things that have not been done ...

I am not tuned in to the outside at this time.

It is autumn in the northern hemisphere and it's a beautiful season to go outside and take walks. Nothing is more healing to our emotional life than being in touch with 'nature,' even if 'nature' is just taking a walk and seeing the blue sky ...

13.1.6 > 31 suggests to me that you should take steps to improve your social life with neighbors, old friends, and family. If your religion has a choir or study group, once you are back on medication consider participating so that you will be in an atmosphere of good influences. In reality your aren't helpless. You have good communication skills, have reared two sons to near adulthood, and I am sure you have many other achievements.

Lovely advice from all. love rodaki's take on 22.1 and I so agree.

Lydia, seems your depression is situational rather than clinical. 22 could say that, also may say that meds might be a superficial fix. going it on your own without meds seems like a true opportunity to find your own inner strength. (I say this with caution because only you can know how severe your depression is, and I would never make a judgement on a forum to med or not to med!)

there is a method known as "steps of change" which I applied to your reading:

22.1 becomes 52.2 becomes 18.5 becomes 57.

22.1 you have what you need to do this on your own. a beautiful line.

52.2 your heart is not happy and you may be tempted to follow certain routes to feeling better. you need to get calm within yourself and find your inner stillness. find the quiet voice of guidance in you, it is there.

18.5 the time is right for righting the mistakes of the past and for fixing the situation. Lise Heyboer says of line 5:
18. 5: Stem-father's decay. Use praise.
With praise and rewards one can gently induce changes where every other method fails. Do not force people or events when it is not necessary, act as gentle as possible, then changes can grow organically. The slightest push can thwart growth.

I like the "use praise"....Don't forget to praise and reward yourself for what you are doing.

I think 57 echoes the above. to let change come gradually and organically. be very very gentle with yourself. BTW, 57.1 was not part of your reading, only 57 as a general relating hexagram.

single parenthood is very stressful, I know, but it is a situation you can grow with. "overwhelmed" is part of the territory. take heart! change happens. kids grow up. life will not be the same forever. be sure to nourish yourself with friends or social gatherings. 13.1.6 is about that....even just a change of scenery, a walk in the mall, dinner at a restaurant, book stores....to remember that there is a whole world out there that you might have forgotten about if you tend to isolate.

I wish you peace:hug:

Lydia, a few thoughts I hope will be helpful. In general, H22 is about superficial appearances. The reading suggests you go slowly and carefully (L1), work hard to making yourself and life beautiful (L2) and don't overlook small offerings from others (L5), which can bring good fortune.

This does not sound like a prescription for depression meds to me. Particularly Line 1, about getting out of the coach and going on foot, sounds like trying other things and moving slowly. Line 1 indicates to me that you think that taking a pill is the fast express to solving the problem, and the reading indicates that is incorrect

Lydia, in general I think these depression meds are somewhat dangerous, and that there are better natural alternatives. 5-htp helps at least 50% of the people who need help. It is inexpensive, and 50MG, one pill in the morning on an empty stomach, and perhaps another at bedtime, may turn your world around.

5-HTP for depression

In any case, I would go slow, and look to use the beauty around you. Subtly penetrate the problem (H57), do not try to solve it all in one massive effort.

People often become sick at heart because their lives are not beautiful. A kind of silent sobbing is the result.

Lydia has two teenage boys, for example. Maybe they are enjoying speaking like tough guys ... when she wanted them to grow up to be gentlemen.

What is the remedy for the lack of beauty in one's life? To create it oneself, I think. Beauty is never destroyed or completely gone. It only seems rather far way these days -- as if refinement is something that other people have, not Lydia.

The seeds of beauty need to be planted into the garden of truth -- and that is something we always can do ourselves. Going around your house, beautify it whenever you can.

Looking at yourself in a mirror, make yourself lovely, Lydia. To attract love, to feel love, make yourself lovely.

Lydia ... Of everything that I read here, Hexagram 57 speaks most clearly ... and I think of these words: "Without tenderness, we are in hell." (I think it was Adrienne Rich who wrote them...)

Leo Tolstoy, in relation to Hexagram 22: "Beauty will save the world."

It saves us, too. Whatever you know as beautiful, whatever truly moves you ... reach for that.

Flower essences

Hi Rodaki and Lydia
I can vouch for the flower essences, They are really wonderful and this could be your 'tiny bundle of silk'. They have the minutest amount of each flower essence but everyone of them tastes different. (I have all 38 of them) You can treat yourself by reading about the mental situation you feel you are in, up to 6 essences can be taken at once, they will not interfere with any other drugs you might be taking and they are guaranteed to do you NO HARM. All you need to take are 2 drops of each essence you think you might need in 30ml of pure water; first thing in the morning, last thing at night and up to 4 times each day. I recommend that you read up about them. Hope this helps.
