Hi

I'm wanting to go back to college and study. I don't know if I should commit myself to study or I should go back to work. I have had problems in the past with education. I don't want to drop out because I made the wrong choice. I don't actually really know what I want to do. I'm having nightmares because I am unable to make a decision on what I want to study. Academics doesnt seem like a good idea since it's not practical in todays economy. However I do have many choices. But certain colleges are further away and commuting would be a problem. I might have some kind of employment lined up but then again Im not certain. I wrote down all the things I'm passionate about (Music, theology, philiosophy) and other things but ever since I said to myself "I should go back to study" it's caused me some great anxiety about the future. I asked the IChing "Should I go to college?"

I got 62.1.2.5>43

I get the impression that I should not go and "The bird meets misfortune by flying."

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm so confused with my situation. Spoiled for choice! :duh:

Hello, I would always take the opportunity to educate myself, if there is one. Further more, you have choices. So far, this is good. Deciding is harder, you want to make it useful for your future career, good income wise? In any case, you should choose something you like and would be good at.
I would not say that the bird will meet with missfortune in hex 62, I think the emphasis is to be patient, set reasonable goals and progress step by step. Much like studying - year by year, exame by exame will get you diploma in the end.
So deciding should be done thoroughly; do not make any big decisions untill you are certain of what you want to do. Perhaps you could start the studies with something more of an objective area and then choose the specialisation?
You should also get some concrete help with deciding; talk to the family, friends professionals, friends who are already studying in areas of your interest.
You could get a job, you wrote - would that job be something you would like to persevere in and then gradualy educate yourself more towards the better career within that line of work?
There is also an idea of a trial run -get involved in some workshops availabe over the summer within the university of your choice? You should do something to move foreward with your plans, but move slowly, using your sense of reason and moderation. There is no need to panic, and I don`t think you should think of this one as a problem, but of an opportunity.
Good luck, d.

You are strongly inclined to make a move before you are ready. If you cannot attend college for some reason try another direction. Though you missed out on the big opportunity of going to college you did not miss out on lesser opportunities to advance that came your way. You were content with a limited fulfilment of your goals. There is a promising opportunity to go to college and you are wondering if you should let it pass you by. Be satisfied in attaining a lesser ambition but not a greater one. Accept what comes your way and be satisifed with what you have. You are in no position to aim higher. Only do what is easy for you.

You will have a breakthrough of somekind after much tension. A revelation. You need to take resolute action. You seem to have doubts and reservations about something. Is there an influential person who may be against you going to college for some reason. You need to discuss this with them. You need to stand up to someone in authority but it's dangerous for you to reveal the true state of your affairs. They should not know. Be diplomatic. Avoid aggressive behaviour.

Thank you both for your replies.

The past week I have been experiencing so much conflict. My past experiences in education have not been great. I asked some of my closest friends what would be an ideal career for me. A career in social care/work counselling or in some caring profession has always interested me. This isnt just an idea I have had. It seems to suit my personality. I have the option of studying for an entry in nursing if I want. This would clearly give me some security and prospects for next year. The chance to move abroad with benifits in the UK. There is a shortage of Nurses in the UK. I could continue study here at home if I get lucky. My passion in life is music and philiosphy however these are subjects and activities I enjoy in my everyday life. As far as a career goes I don't think they would be practical. The pre Nursing certificate can lead to many other areas in the Care sector and maybe even the completion of it would look good on my C.V. The way the economy is now I think it would be a good thing to do. But why is there this voice in my head that is doubting this? I asked again if going to study Nursing is a good idea.

I got 6.5.6>40

This is still unclear to me according to Wilhelm. It seems like it is saying there is a conflict but which voice should I be listening to? The job I can take now has no prospects it is just for some extra cash. Education seems like the most important thing now. I just don't want to make the same mistakes I did in the past. Im 28 years old now and my life has improved so much in the last year that I really feel like I can keep going. I think the fear of the future is holding me back. No decision is guranteed to happiness. That isn't what I am striving for. I want to pave the way for new experiences and not to waste my talents Maybe its more to do with my attitude towards it and not letting the past control the present.

Thank you to everybody who helps me. :bows:

It looks like two alternatives are given here. In the first alternative, you argue it through in your own mind, and you benefit. In the second alternative, you argue it through, but you can never settle it. Maybe it would help you to ask a question along these lines: "What am I supposed to be doing in the immediate future?"

What am I supposed to be doing in the immediate future?

28.4.6>57

4.The ridge beam is supported. Good fortune. If there are ulterior intentions, it is shameful.

Maybe this means I need support in order to take it on?

6. One must go through the water. It goes over one's head. Misfortune. No error.

Does this mean I will find it too difficult?

Hexagram 57 suggests I should take things easy and take each day as it comes?

Im a newbie here so my interpretations may be too literal.

Thank you for your help. :)

I also asked if I had othe motives

39.4.5>62

So there are obstructions (clearly)

4. Going leads to obstructions, arriving leads to union.

5. In the midst of the greatest obstructions come friends.*

which leads to

62 'One should do small things

I feel even more confused than before. I honestly don't feel confident at all. :-(

Hi Fenix :)

Be satisfied in attaining a lesser ambition but not a greater one (college). You are not up to it yet. Accept what comes your way for now (concerning work). Be satisifed with what you have for now. You are in no position to aim higher. Only do what is easy for you. The key is to not push yourself to aim higher than you are capable of or you will meet with disaster. College is not a good idea right now. Stick to what you do well. Stick to finding a good job that you are capable of doing.

Follow this advise.

You are feeling somewhat in a crisis situation, but you need not feel that way, because the ridgepole of your life has been supported.

The ridgepole has been supported by the I Ching and by the good advice of people who have responded to your thread!

Now, don't go walking off into water that is over your head, or you will risk drowning, and you will have nobody to blame but yourself. Simply stated, this is a time when you must think only about doing small and easily do-able things -- and avoid like the plague anything that is difficult. It's time to stop probing into options, I think, and just think about relaxing.

Cornucopia,

Do you think it literally means I should not aim higher? Today I felt much better about what I wanted with the future and Im not really in conflict anymore. Just worried. The problem here is another year of small things really means another year of not doing much at all. Life has been dragging and I have been scared to make these choices that could lead to good things. I don't want to retreat because of what I or you think of the I-ching. There are so many variables. As far as the employment goes it's not what its cracked up to be and its even more depressing than you could imagine and it doesnt lead to much more cash, security or happiness.

If I complete this pre college nursing course it will give me more options by summer time. Honestly, I really just admitted to myself that I'm scared of going back to education but knowing I can accomplish it. I spent a long time deciding what I should do. I applied for it. So I wont know If I got in till September. By then I can see what is the best choice. Thank you so much for your help. :bows:

Ginnie,

You are right about relaxing and not getting worked up. I have been supported by many friends and all of them agree that this kind of work is for me. I dont have any real worries when I think about it. Its because I havent needed to make a real decision in a long time that would change my life. My life needs to change. :) I'm more relaxed now thanks to your help. I'm going to take small steps now towards organizing the little things that need fixing and when the time comes I'll know what to to. I can apply for it but the choice is up to me in the end. Thank you for your time. :bows:

To make you feel more confident and ease your mind.

Try asking by stating the exact name of the course you applied for.

Will I succeed in completing the pre college nursing course?

If I complete this pre college nursing course will I find a good job?

Good Luck! :)
