I teach in a high school. An electric pencil sharpener migrated to our classroom from someone else's, but made a sickly noise. I was curious to see how much longer its life would be, so I got a hexagram from combining the date with the serial number of the sharpener. The hexagram was 23.6. I then wrote the hexagram with its changing line on the bottom of the sharpener and waited.

I concluded that it was definitely on its last legs, that it wouldn't make it beyond the end of 2004. But the end came sooner than I thought...

What actually happened was that in less than one week, a student knocked it from the shelf by accident and it smashed to the floor. After that it no longer worked at all.

So the fate of the sharpener, reflected in the question. was answered by the name and picture of the hexagram, as well as the changing line.
