Quote:

The path of the 'superior' is to skill development to the level of operating smoothly in any context, immediate integration etc but also have the skill to extract oneself from a context. The path of 111111 to 000000 covers that in that each manifestation is a particular skill and the learning of those skills reduces one to 'filtering' the context - and so operating out of the realm of the unconditional.

This path is reflected in the passage through hex 01 to its 'opposite' hex 02. The 63-ness of 01, covering the 'correct' nature in 01, is covered by hex 64 with its focus on 'never closing, remain open' etc and so perpetual training. The issue is then where we can be over-trained, where we CAN 'stop' and so trust our instincts (the filtering process)

Is this about the junzi in the I Ching? It has been suggested here (by Brad, I think) that "young noble" is a better translation than "superior man".
But anyway, the above description sounds like a description of a skilled robot. Or of a control freak, perhaps.
If this "superior" is supposed to be an example of what it means to be alive I would rather avoid him. The birds in my backyard can teach me more.

Yly, whats the purpose of these 'quote' threads? Do you have any thoughts of your own to offer?

I would not like to believe I am studying anything to become superior.... I would like to think all my study would make me able to understand and master to a degree, only what my abilities allow me to...all the study in the time allowed for it, when not put to a practical purpose, is nothing more than an exersize in the futility of it's aquasition. IMHO

I really like Yly2pg1?s statement, though I had to read it more than once to get it.

?The path of the 'superior' (young noble, student, whichever) is to skill development to the level of operating smoothly in any context, immediate integration etc but also have the skill to extract oneself from a context.?

The smaller and tighter course corrections are, the more efficiently (smoothly) a ship moves through the water, and that makes the shortest distance between two places, which quickens the ETA.

On a human level, comprehending continuity of movement serves to effect a quick and easy transition from change to change. This can only happen when the individual has the ?skill to extract oneself from a context?, and gain an unobstructed view - and so operating from the realm of unconditional.

The more we lose ourselves in over-analysis, the further we take ourselves from the truth.

"The smaller and tighter course corrections are, the more efficiently (smoothly) a ship moves through the water"

Efficient yes, but the downside is that the ship doesn't dance.
That is the difference between a computer steered ship and a ship that is steered by a human, preferably drunk.

Guess that depends on if someone?s an analyst by their own nature, and how practically useful the analysis is. By itself data doesn?t interest me, but when it shows a useful way to problem solve, it is helpful. In this case, I think Yly2?s example reflects an important and useful principle, albeit along the lines of psycho-cybernetics.

Proposal for a new rule:

From now on, anyone who cites from the bible of Chris Lofting pays 1 (one) english pound per word to Hilary!

It seems to me that Y is simply describing what we all do, or try to do, as we learn how to navigate through life, although the language is very formalized psychology type language.

Yi is about interconnectedness:

First entry for Primary Hexagram

1st line: Martin(22022006_1115), - Yang - 1
2nd line: Matt(22022006_1319) - Yang - 1
3rd line: Jerryd(22022006_1333) - Yang - 1
4th line: Bruce(22022006_1359) - Yang - 1
5th line: Hilary(22022006_1650) - Yin - 0
6th line: Pakua(22022006_1718) - Yin - 0

=>111100=>Hexagram34

2nd Reentry for Changing line(s)

1st line: Martin - (22022006_1605) - 1
2nd line: Matt - (22022006_1535) - 1
3rd line: Jerryd - 0
4th line: Bruce - (22022006_1612) - 1
5th line: Hilary - 0
6th line: Pakua - 0

=>110100

3rd ... Reentry for Changing line(s) in Relating Hexagram (after XORing)

1st line: Martin - (22022006_1711)/(22022006_1716)
2nd line: Matt - 0
3rd line: Jerryd - 0
4th line: Bruce - 0
5th line: Hilary - 0
6th line: Pakua - 0

Hence,

111100 (Hex34)
110100 (Hex54)(Changing lines at line 1,2,4)
----------XOR
001000 (Hex15)

111100 (Hex34) => to extract oneself from a context, a firm purpose and focusing strength is required

From Primary Hexagram above (i.e. 111100),

111100 (Hex34) - To extract oneself from a context
000011 (Hex20) - To gain an unobstructed view
--------AND
000000 (Hex2) - To operate from the realm of unconditional

Hi Void,

I don't understand nor have interest in binary equations, but it seems that Y is expressing the dynamic of objectivity.

Kinda cool that it all ?adds up? on a grid, as well as on a feeling or intuitive level.

Interesting that 34 is shown as extracting self from context.
And 20 rising above to gain a clearer view.
2 as realm of unconditional.
Makes sense.
And it?s sorta spiritual in its own way:

?The path of 111111 to 000000 covers that in that each manifestation (hexagram?) is a particular skill and the learning of those skills reduces one to 'filtering' the context - and so operating out of the realm of the unconditional.?

Filtering context is an interesting way to view an exchange with the Yi, with the goal of obtaining objectivity. The interesting thing here is that this objectivity is linked to hexagram 2, because 2 is unconditional devotion toward basically everything.

?This path is reflected in the passage through hex 01 to its 'opposite' hex 02. The 63-ness of 01, covering the 'correct' nature in 01, is covered by hex 64 with its focus on 'never closing, remain open' etc and so perpetual training. The issue is then where we can be over-trained, where we CAN 'stop' and so trust our instincts (the filtering process)?

The completeness of 1 is expressed in the incompleteness of 64. A perfect circle, or cycle.

Y,
Is over-training or conditioning a potential problem here?
Is trusting instincts ?clouding? the reality, if the context is still present?
Or, is it first necessary to filter those trained or conditioned auto-responses we develop over time, and thus acquiring 2-ness?

He was XORing 34 with hex 54 resulting in hex 15.
So changing lines in the XOR interaction were 1,2,4.

Or, to say another way - we were guinea pigs for a lab experiment

Emoticons, Rosalie (if you are asking what the codes are: you will get a page with codes if you click emoticons on the left side of the page, under help)

I was chatting with Lightangel earlier and she came up with the idea to make hexagrams in this way.

Background
This path is reflected in the passage through hex 01 to its 'opposite' hex 02. The 63-ness of 01, covering the 'correct' nature in 01, is covered by hex 64 with its focus on 'never closing, remain open' etc and so perpetual training. The issue is then where we can be over-trained, where we CAN 'stop' and so trust our instincts (the filtering process)

101010 (Hex63)
010101 (Hex64) - focus on never closing, remain open
--------XOR
111111

101010 (Hex63)
010101 (Hex64) - focus on never closing, remain open
--------AND
000000

=>AND/XOR dichotomy
=> 000000/111111
This reflects the background of the dynamics.

- Is over-training or conditioning a potential problem here?

111100 (Hex34) => to extract oneself from a context
110100 (Hex54) => FILTERing a context
----------XOR
001000 (Hex15)

=> That over training of Hex34 is to be filtered by Hex54 (110100).
Hex54 reflects a need to transform and transcend (i.e waiting for the right conditions), and hence filtering the excessive Yang energy of Hex34.

IOW, Hex54 reminds that "chastising close the way" (征凶).

Staring at screen in state of dismay, I?m reminded of the scene in 2001 a Space Odyssey, where astronaut Bowman realizes possible human intelligence in Hal.

Y,
Is over-training or conditioning a potential problem here?

Filtering through the context of 54 - ?need to transform and transcend (i.e waiting for the right conditions)? .. sounds like a rationalizing process with biding time as essential to ones end ? whatever that end is. If the end is to be 1, then 64 makes that possible: Understands the transitory in the light of the eternity of the end.

Thank you, Hal.

It is just learning curve ... imagine situations like "first few days in the driving lessons" etc etc.

It reminds me of the first month i divined with Yi.
All the lines, the hexagrams, the texts mesh up ...

Later, i managed to slowly extract myself from the lines i gather - to imbue in the line, the image, the implications without much reference to the written texts ...
