Etymology of the ideogram Bi.8
The ideogram used to describe the eighth hexagram is composed from the repetition of the general symbol for humans. Many characters encountered are based on this model. One of them represents two humans, again, but with their backs at each other; this symbolizes the expression North, the cardinal point from which one is expected to naturally turn his back from; a feng shui argument considering the southern position of the sun in relation to the northern hemisphere.
Another ideogram originally had these two human characters one behind the other. Along the centuries this character, meaning to join-in in a movement towards the outside, an illustration of the idea to follow (in the sense of taking part of) evolved by adding to it the symbol designating to walk and the symbol for foot. The simplification of the Pinyin system of 1957 rendered its original meaning to the ideogram: two persons following each other.
The name applied-to and used to describe the seventh hexagram is the reverse. It also represents two persons standing one behind the other but here, they are doing so in the opposite direction (that is, from left to right), towards the inside. They are not going away but towards (within)…village, home, community, clan.
From the generally applied meaning of this idea, mutual alliance, it further illustrates the five families gathering at the house of the elders for the cult of the ancestors. In classical China, this formula of the five families represented the first degree of the social organization of a town.
