Etymology of the ideogram Fu.24






Two side by side elements are used to illustrate hexagram 24. On the left, one of the accepted symbols to designate Walking, used contextually to explain that the ideogram in the composition is to be considered as one of movement. On the right is a complex group whose definition is not assured, especially its top portion. Its canonical form evoked a similarity to the half-buried houses found at Ban Po (this is a very specific prehistoric house common to this region from the period from about 8000 b.c).

In the early life of the written Yi Jing, this ideogram was similar to the one that would eventually become the character used to illustrate Beneficial, and that of Opportunity and Cordiality; these characters define the appropriate attitude to adopt during Kun.2, as can be seen in its Great Image. The lower part of the group on the right represents a Hindered Foot, one dragging, trailing back; the ideogram of a difficult walk.

For the longest time this compilation has illustrated the expression To Come Back, To Return. Many of its composed derivates confirm this: it can mean a return to winter (in combination with the ideogram for Suit it becomes Insulated Clothing); a return to old habits (in combination with the ideogram Earth it means Cave); it can also be used to illustrate a Strong Heel (combined to Carriage it is the Axle, the essential piece that allows movement). Examples of these are found at the transition level of Xiao Xu.9, the Prefect level of Da Xu.26 and at the Minister level of Da Chuang.34. Finally, it is used to illustrate the central core from which the vital flow originates (combined to the ideogram Body it means the Abdomen), as can be seen at the Minister of Ming Yi.36.

Here, this Returning is characterized by the ideogram Movement: the intended illustration is one of renewal. It means at the same time a Natural and Difficult Comeback; it also clearly characterizes a link using Yin attributes, a quality essential to accompany a return to Yang.

From the universal perspective we have contractive blending (earth in top = absolute trust in another/others) operating in a context of expansive binding (thunder in bottom = enlightenment); thus "with/from enlightenment come absolute trust in another/others"
