Etymology of the ideogram Dun.33

The ideogram of the thirty-third hexagram has two parts. On the left is the general ideogram for Walking, quality of most figures concerned with movement. On the right an ideogram itself composed of two groups: the symbol for the Hog family (pigs, boars…) reinforced by the ideogram for Meat – designating a Piglet.

When these ideograms are combined, it is usually to describe the reaction of the Piglet to the approach of a human (or any other danger), the verb To Flee. However, fleeing is not specific to Piglets, it is an instinctive reaction in many animals. The choice of the Piglet to build this ideogram is intentional for there exist other characters, graphically close, expressing the idea of Flight.

One of them, composed with the ideogram To Walk, but associated with the symbol for Shield, insists on fleeing but in the sense of Taking Shelter.

The Pig, animal whose growth is the most spectacular and profitable, brings an added dimension to this hexagram and emphasizes the advantages of Retreating (retiring). Furthermore, the Yin-associated retirement of the Piglet – already at the first level we see but the end of its tail – echoes the Yang-associated movement of the symbolic animal of Da Chuang.34 (Great Strength), the reverse hexagram of this here Dun.33, as can be understood at the third and sixth levels of Da Chuang34: the Bull charges with its head low and its horns forward.

While the image of the Bull proposes a thrust whose exploitation may be transformed powerfully, the image of the Pig slipping-away (preserving its capacity to substantially fatten) is a reinforcement strategy allowing the option of returning the situation in our own profit.

The position of the Pig in the Chinese horoscope – the last of the Yin symbols, is no stranger to this idea of favorable turnovers.
