Etymology of the ideogram ge.49

The ideogram used to illustrate hexagram 49 is non-decomposable. It represented, originally, the Tanning Process. We can guess in the ideogram the ancient shape of the skin of an animal (with the head and the tail) stretched on a wooden support to be scrapped and rid of the remaining flesh. This preparation process converted this skin into leather.

Of this operation, this character has kept a double meaning: one concrete in relation to the material (Prefect level of Dun.33) and, the other, the idea of going from one state to the other (from fair to renewed) as understood at the transition level of Ding.50.

In the first case, the character Ge intervenes as a general radical in different characters concerning Leathered Goods – like the verb To Tan for which it is combined with the ideogram Suppleness – or by designating Leather Objects like Shoes or a Swing, when combined with the ideogram Transfer, as understood at the Minister level of Yi.42.

In the second case the idea is a current word, but verbally and abstractly: To Eliminate, To Repel, To Deduct, to get rid of what is no more appropriate (as is seen in the Tenth Wing). This idea is best understood in the expression to get rid of the old to make way for the new, from the Chinese syntax To Abolish (hexagram 49), the ancient, and Establish (hexagram 50), the new.

This idea is so familiar to the creators of the Yi Jing that there is a short cut expression simply assembled from the names of hexagram 50 and 49, written in that order (Ding Ge).

The particular meaning of the ideogram Ge is so overshadowed by the political term Revolution in modern China that it has become naturally associated to it. For example the reform instigated by Xiaoping to pull China out of Maoism was designated by a symbol in which the first character meant To Change (it is mentioned at the Minister level) and the second character, the name of this hexagram, Ge.

How ironic historically…actually, in the late 1800, when Marx was translated in Chinese, writers chose the two characters Ge Ming to express the meaning of his Revolution, in which Ge is the name of this ideogram and Ming the word Mandate (mentioned at the Minister level). This is how the most revolutionary concept of the german philosopher appeared in China in the form of the return to a Changing of Mandate. That same idea had been instigated by the Zhou three thousand years before to justify their acquisition of power.

Hi there,

Hexagram interpretations are contextual, meaning that, when the oracle is consulted, they apply to a question posed to it. They have no fixed meaning...

I don't know...considering all those radicals in the Chinese language, the whole thing seems like commie pinko leftist revolutionary stuff to me.

Seriously, though, 49 emphasises the need for change. If I were to get hex 49 in response to a question about a change of government in a country, I would think it would be saying that the revolution is a necessary and natural response to the situation.

If I were in the government on the receiving end of the revolution and got 49, I would see it as unfortunate... if on the revolutionaries side, I would see it as fortunate.

yes they do - all hexagrams have a universal form that comes from the method used to create them - self-referencing. BUT the form is GENERAL, vague.

For hex 49 the form is (a) a context of expansive bounding (a boundary moving outwards) and (b) a text of expansive bonding (a focus on sharing of space with another/others)

slight specialisation through association with emotion gives us (a) a context of issues of acceptance within which is operating (b) a text of intensity in expression (passion etc, to be passionate about something/someone etc)

Acceptance issues cover being let in as member of the 'gang' and the boundary moving outwards covers the 'take over' nature of such - outside is difference, inside is sameness and the boundary moves outwards, converting difference to sameness.

Added to that is the intense expression of the bonding trigram where the bonding is outwardly focused and links the sharing of thought with others (49 shares space with 13 and so includes the 'like minded' influence.)

Further specialisation takes us to the local level of trigrams and so hexagram 49 reads "with/from guidance comes intensity in expression". Included in this is revolution in that ideology leads to 'intensity in expressions'! Refine that further to bring out the trait of revolution is revealing what is behind the mask - to unmask - and compare that with the opposite of 49, 04 where we mask, put on the social facade.

In this act of revelation is showing corruption, the 'truth' etc etc There is also the link to molting where the 'mask' falls off due to seasonal change - as does the shedding of skin
etc.

To get a better idea about 49, consider its skeletal form, described by analogy to the generic characteristics of 33 and so a focus on a 'gap' to enter, as well as being tricked to enter, being enticed etc., to exploit the gap, the hole, etc - to pick at it, draw it back, reveal beneath etc and all done with passion. ( a bit like picking at a scab, the act reflecting the 'need' to do so, the enticement of the scab to be picked - and the possible negative consequences of such!)

You can see here how we have moved from mindless 'bounding/bonding' into high details!

Chris.

There you go; you are all going to die in a fiery and unstoppable revolution. For those on the receiving end, it will be the end of the world...

Hi Chris,

Yes, that's what I meant for hexagrams and their text being "contextual" to the situation/question at hand. Yes, they do have a general meaning, but in an oracular setting, as opposed to your quasi-rational method, "context" is the "fine-tuning" button.

What I meant to say also for not "having fixed meanings" is that one answer/interpretation does not apply to two dissimilar situations, even though they may receive the same hexagram with the same moving lines. Even answers/interpretations to a specific question have a pesky tendency to shift over time as the underlying context itself shifts and evolutes.

And what if the revolutionaries and the government are the same? Can be there a meaning that they will fall in the short term? if the state-government is a dictatorship by revolutionaries??:thanks

It's about transformation, and being aware of the right time to shed the old ways and begin anew. It's about shedding old skins, masks, beliefs or encrusted ways of thought. And about the inevitability of change... when it's the right season for it. The thing about revolutions, though, is that actually there aren't any liberators and there's no one to be liberated.
