Just how do you all interpret these? Are they something that may happen if?.....or are they static?....

I am never quite sure how I should understand them. Usually they seem to me to be
If you do/don't do this....
this could be the outcome...

But it also seems as though they say it doesn't matter which way you act this is the thing that will bite you in the buttocks.

I want everyone to notice that the word buttocks has been used....sparhawk cannot be far away. :D

I personally see the nucleur hexagrams as the part thats from you, the first and last lines are more from the world around you. So this part is speaking from the inside, the middle lines, line 3 and 4 are the only ones that are not changing in the proces the rest is. This are the middle man lines, the deepest part the source from the hexagram.

When looking at a nucleur hexagram I see the deeper part of this hexagram. A deeper part where you get the answer from.

It's like they say in acupuncture the erea under the knees are from the earth, the part above the elbows are from heaven. The rest is really from yourself.

This is a nice picture about the nucleur hexagrams, made by Han Boering a Dutch I Ching specialist.

Thank you frank_r that makes a world of sense to me. This must be the part of us that "gets" what the Yi is telling us the part that resonates with the answer.

To me, the nuclear hexagrams make a comment on the deeper nature of the primary hexagram and the course it inevitably follows. I think in this way the nuclear hexagrams reveal some of the deeper philosophical truths of the I.

to make what I mean clearer, I'll give a couple examples:

the nuclear hexagram to h.23 is h.2. this shows that times when prevailing forces disintegrate or become obsolete, when seen from the standpoint of the future, turn out to be the emergence of the forces that will prevail later on. like seeds germinating after a forest fire. or the emergence of the rave scene out of the ashes of the punk movement :)

the nuclear hexagram to h.37 is h.64. this shows that a solid community or household is like a wave. from one point of view it is always changing, unstable; and yet from another point of view it is very solid because it has momentum. because it exists in time, we can never say it is exactly this or that because by the time we do, it has become something else. yet there is no denying that it exists.

on the other hand, the nuclear hex of h.54 is h.63. h.54 describes a woman going off to marry, while h.63 describes the instability of late summer. this shows that we ultimately grow disillusioned with things that are dangerous and exciting after we acquire them, because they lose their grandeur with familiarity.

note also that h.63 and h.64 are each other's nuclear hexagrams.

I'm sure one could argue with these interpretations, but hopefully you can see what I mean.
