Hi-

In the past two days I've received 10.2.6>17 three times, but with different questions. The questions were:

What effect will my posting have? (in answer to Goldfish's 23 in New and Comfused, Part 2)
Will the changes that I'm trying to make (in my life) be in place in July?
Will the obstruction that is preventing me from making that connection in my life be overturned when I leave my present situation?

Using Karcher, the meaning seems pretty straightforward:

10.2 Treading the way, smoothing, smoothing. Divination: for shadowed people the way is open. (This seems like a description of understanding life through using the Yi Jing.)

10.6 Observe your treading, the predecessors are auspicious. Their recurring fundamentally opens the way. Look at the path you have been walking. Your predecessors are extending their blessings. Where they recur and you walk in their footsteps, the way fundamentally opens. (I take this as where you follow the way in the Yi Jing, things will open up.).

Although the answers to each of the three questions I asked can be applied to each problem, the repetition makes me wonder if maybe the Yi Jing is trying to get something larger across to me. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,

Miakoda

All seems to be about conduct and behaviour - treading the middle way. Keep on being sincere and careful while evaluating the effects of past actions, then the process of serving others will place you naturally where you wish to be.

Miakoda,
The oracle has definitely singled out conduct for you. If you are really serious about self-examination there is a question you might ask the oracle on a daily basis: Please provide me with my principle of right action for today. Then at the end of the day (or next morning) reflect upon your activity and ask the oracle to grade your performance based upon the principle of right action. You might write out a couple sentences about how you think you did before asking for a grade. A professor of Religious Studies at university suggested this many years ago and I have found it quite helpful for self-development.

Hex 10.2 this advises you to keep away from the struggles of life, not to get caught up in the rush for material goods and pleasure. To be more aloof and independent.

Hex 10.6 says that you should look back at your past behaviour to see how you have fared in your life, if you have done good, then that is very fortunate for you and to carry on in this way will give you success in your future endeavours.

Hex 17 this says that you should learn of how to be of help to others, but everything you do must be done unselfishly, not by trying to exploit people. So widen your outlook and approach things from a different angle. So think carefully be also very adaptable to life's changing circumstances and then you should win thorough.

Everyone:

Thanks for your thoughts. Ken, I do ask for guidance daily, although not with those words--I have to admit that the phrase "principle of right action" brings up the image of a nun with a ruler hidden behind her back for me. I did ask the Yi Jing what it thought of my asking for a grade and it said: 23.4>35--strip it away! Perhaps 10 was about doing works for others as some suggested. I try to be committed to contributing to the greater good and approach life that way, but I think it's turned out to be a more personal message this time. Events have provided the reason why I received 10.2.6>17 over and over again. I think it was a warning (this isn't the first time I've received a repeated answer--twice 51 has appeared on a multiple basis--in one case 10 times over a couple of weeks--and it was followed by major major upheavals).

Yesterday something that was going to enable me to move on from the situation I'm living in fell through. Although that didn't apply to my first question (about Goldfish and if I was helping her correctly), it strongly impacts the other two that I had asked about. They were: whether my life will be changed in July and whether I will be able to make the connection that I've been hoping will open up.

It seems that the 10.2 was telling me that what was coming was going to make me stay in the shadows for now. This is very, very frustrating. The situation I live in, a long-term marriage that is ending mutually, isn't horrible (the fighting has long since ended), but I would've thought I'd be unentangled at this point and now I'm stuck for longer because of finances.

On top of that, many big doings have been going on have been making life very, very difficult at this time. I'm in a kind of limbo. I have friends I can turn to, but the one who is most important to me is a man. Although my spending time with him wouldn't be a problem for my pre-exhusband (I have many friends who are male), this man is extremely wary of spending time with me and entering into a closer friendship with me I think because of my status. Those who know us mutually are aware of the state of my marriage. I don't believe they would look down on whether we spend time together, but I don't think I could convince him otherwise.

So, I will conduct myself well (10), stay in the shadows (10.2), and walk in the footsteps of the predecessors (10.6) to follow the way (17). I asked the Yi Jing: how will I cope with this? The answer was 11--the ideogram portrays a person in water, connected to the flow of the tao.

Thought you might want to know how it played out....

Lol. Actually, Mikoada, it is not really terse as all that. I learned to use the I Ching from a professor of Religious Studies back in the 70's. He had been a Philosophy professor before the R.S. department was formed so his rhetoric is informed with philosophical language. As well as Asian Philosophy he taught Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle, so the wording is from that sort of rhetoric. You could also substitute 'rule of right action', or 'guiding hexagram for the day'. Not meant to be a strait jacket. ;) The term "right action' is likely to cause problems with all sorts these days. By right action I mean nothing more than action appropriate to ones nature. It may have been Confucius who said He who accords with his nature and acts with ease is a sage. The rule of right action is intended to provide that statement of action which to conform with will result in my according with my nature and acting with ease. A principle is a 'source' or 'that from which anything proceeds'. So if I received hexagram 53 for my principle of right action then my actions for the day will proceed, in the round, from slow progress, one step at a time. No full speed ahead. Whereas if I received hexagram 35, as I did today, then the principle would be advance and accomplish, full speed ahead, everything's coming up roses. Imagine if I didn't have that info when I started my day. Projects potentiated to succeed might never have gotten started. Or if 53 was PRA then overreach might have rendered a well-potentiated project a disaster. Needless to say an act of gratitude should attend every consultation.

IF using random/miraculous methods there is nothing special about this, if using the Emotional IC work then your mind is stuck, dominated by seeing all through one set of 'eyes' -

WIth/from careful treading of a path (10) comes finding a belief, someone/thing to follow. (17)

Line position 2 is controlled by qualities associated with hexagram 7, line positiom 6 is controlled by qualities associated with 23, and so the pair of line positions, 2&6, are covered by 7 + 23 = 04. 04 covers masking, socialisation of a particular kind (rather than the general kind of 7, the 23 acts to prune the general)

Thanks, Chris.

And thanks, Ken. I've been beginning the day with the request for guidance for about a year and a half now and I do find that is shaping my life in fascinating ways. What act of gratitude would you suggest?

Mikoada,
It can be ritualized (candles, incense) or just repeating thanks at the end of the consultation. If you are inclined to prayer you might just say 'Thank-you Tao' along with your other petitions or thanksgivings. But I think the feeling of gratitude is most important. Tao knows the heart before the words. Someday if you have time you might thank the oracle and then roll the coins and see what Tao says back to you. You might have a bit of a conversation.
