Hello everyone;

I asked the I Ching, "what is my purpose in life"

I received hex 47, line 1 changing, to hex 58.

My interpretation is that my purpose in life is to "overcome restrictions by looking inward" (hex 47)

That "most of my difficulties are made worse by my reaction to them." (line 1)

and

"Interact with people, be cheerful and encouraging." (hex 58)

Does this sound like I am on the right track. The areas that the I Ching described, are weak areas in my life that I need to work on.

Thanks;
Kevin

Thanks Cassius Clay and Cyclotron Majesty; :bows:

Cyclotron...Why do you think I would benefit from qigong? Was it because of my I Ching outcome, or because I am a student of martial arts?

How can I learn about qigong, I just now heard of it and looked up the definition, and thats all I know right now. It sounds interesting and that it would be something great to learn.

Thanks again;
Kevin

You need to know your general purpose? Simple, answer these questions:

IN GENERAL do you prefer facts OR values?

IN GENERAL do you prefer what was/is/will be OR what could have been/is not/could be?

IN GENERAL do you prefer to respond to things (be reactive) OR instigate things (be proactive)?

We will then use the IC to come up with the *general* purpose of your life as a specialist member of the species.

Thanks for your reply Chris.

I had to think about those for awhile.

I would say that I prefer values.

I prefer what could have been/is not/could be?

and I prefer to instigate things (be proactive)?

Even though things don't always work out that way. I have to be reactive a lot of the times, even though I would prefer to be proactive.

Given your answers, your totem is therefore 001 = 001001 = mountain - with self-restraint comes discernment (focus on quality control, learn from suffering etc)

001001 (52)
101010 (63 - closure, completion, ending, and so link to purpose)
-------- XOR
100011 augmentation (42) - purpose.

Notice how 52 has this focus on quality control and IT works to 'lift' quality as represented in 42, a change of level, to augment etc - THAT is the purpose of those who 'fit' into the 52 type. Note that the 'ending' nature and so representative of purpose, the end, it also used to neutralise events in bringing them to a close prematurely. In game theory this is the "Nash Equilibrium".

That said, I used three questions not six so you could map to:

hex -> purpose (63-ness, ending)
15 -> 03
52 -> 42
39 -> 24
53 -> 27
62 -> 17
56 -> 25
31 -> 51
33 -> 21

Consider the others in the first column to get the one that resonates with you the best, then read the hex in the second column to get the purpose/ending hexagram. The end can cover a lifetime as it can cycles within a life (and so repetitions of the cycle of begin/end)

Note that the purpose/ending hexagram is for the GROUP you appear to be a member of (those that map to the trigram of mountain and so associated MBTI etc temperament of XNFJ) and so the goal is augmenting anything. This includes mentoring etc where one's identity is derived through the context, be it someone or something, your quality control acts to refine that someone/something.

if you were reactive then your totem would be earth (000 -> 000000 and so fit one of the hexs 02,23,08,20,16,35,45,12)

Okay, I went through all of the hexagrams listed, and the one that best resonates with me is 53 Development, Gradual Progress. I also went through the hexagrams listed for if I was reactive, but none of them resonated with me.

So then, does this mean that Hex 53->27 would describe my purpose in life? I guess the next step would be to learn all about those hexagrams and the areas they represent.

Yes. The general purpose nature of 27 covers its focus on getting the initial configuration 'right' and in so doing establishing good foundations.

27 covers infrastructure issues in general, and what to put in in particular - the 'need' to flesh out the skeleton requires quality control, a discerning mind (a 'mature' mind?)

Thus the 53 covers a class of individuals and you are an instance of that class - what you do PERSONALLY is unique to the class but in GENERAL you will favour class behaviours etc.

Thus 53 'completes', as a purpose, of maturing and so filling in, refining, etc as covered in 27 (in the traditional text 27 covers nourishment or hungering, a skeletal form has a need to be filled and so a warning about being discerning. Your 'nature' of gradual development and so of maturing, aids in becoming discerning and using such to flesh out skeletal forms - be they people or buildings or ideas etc)

Because you said this:

"overcome restrictions by looking inward" (hex 47)

Thats what Qigong is all about. Martial arts background will help. Yet It's internal, and using awareness to overcome restirctions inward. It's a very ... diffrent thing for everyone. The practice is beificial in ways nothing else can be. It's inner cultivation. Self accupuncture if you will... Nothing is inner cultivating except inner cultivation, and one of the best and most accesible and also most powerful is Qigong. It's been called Chinese yoga, it's more about meditation and keeping still than postures or physical feats. It can be boring sometimes. But It's helpful. And it works. And the transformation is real....

Hex 47

Hi I feel the message in the hexagram 47 is something like a wishing well. The water is contained within the well and therefore restricted but when the well overflows it sends the water out in all of the eight directions to be a part of everything out there. When you dont feel like being the life and soul ,go back to being contained and turn inwards get yourself in order before once again venturing out. The 47 is something of a venture capitalist and is prepared to take a risk in life. It can feel dangerous at times but unless you venture out you will never know what you might achieve. It can be scary to be the water that is pouring down from a waterfall but it is also exhilerating and will make you feel more alive than ever before. So take some chances....chance is the essence of time and your time could be now. I once studied Qi gong and it is indeed wonderful but that is for when you want to turn inward taking a chance is for when your water seeps into every area of your life and the opportunities are there if you are happy to take a chance. Sometimes we use the sense of being restricted as an excuse not to venture out but if we do we can make other peoples wishes come true but best of all your own. Let me know how you get on. "Overcome restrictions by looking inward",
actually to me your answer sounds as if advising exactly the opposite of this.

The two lakes are replenishing each other. 58 speaks of joy in common with
others, mutual joy; exchanging knowledge, keeping good company; joining
with fulfilling friends; enriching each other. This describes the ideal source
of joy.

The changing lines describe how one departs from this ideal. Line 1 shows
someone who relies on themselves alone, as a source of joy. This person is
confined in themselves, is inwardly harmonious, and self-sufficient. And
yet, despite this sweet feeling of happiness, this person is still warned with
47. Oppression and exhaustion. 47 shows one lake, just one, which is dried
up. I think that the problem here is that the person of 58:1 is, at the end
of the day, alone. And no matter how well we can manage, many times, to
feel fine by ourselves, this joy is still finite, and can easily get exhausted.
We are humans, and we need another 'lake'. We need a source of joy also
outside ourselves. 58:1 is good, it's good to be happy in ourselves; but it's
not enough. You need two sources of joy together.

So i think the message to you, about your path in life, is to make sure not
only that you are happy in yourself, but also not to rely on yourself alone, as
this will exhaust you. Overcome restrictions not only by looking inward, but
also by happily joining with others, to increase their joy and yours. Sounds
like great advice to me!

Just noticed that you actually had the mirror answer, 47:1 to 58! :)
Ooops, sorry, well, actually these two for me personally are extremely
similar and are both saying more or less the same thing (except that
47:1 feels quite bad and depressing...). No point in getting stuck in
despair. Find people and be with people and be happy. Be happy, but
not alone, stop being alone. And the mirror one (the one i mistakenly
'read'!), even if you are happy by yourself, make sure it's not a
permanent situation of loneliness. No matter what you do, make sure
you aim for mutual happiness with others.

Hex 47

I thought I had replied to this before but it has not shown up. So basically my opinion of Hex 47 is to turn inward regain your strength you may have a tendency to give your all until your energy is drained. Therefore the best thing you can do is find your balance point and build yourself up again. Whatever you have to say is valid but not necessarily understood so words may not be the best way you can communicate. Try to find alternative ways such as art rather than the written or verbal word what you have to say is worth hearing if you can find a way to communicate that gets through. Once you have recharged yourself get back out there and do what you can to improve the world but try not to keep going until you are drained again. Learn to stop short of that and recharge on a regular basis. Sometimes to be confined in certain areas can be a good thing, such as motherhood. Confined indeed but not forever and what you put into something is what you will get out of it. So if you are restricted by circumstances find a way to enjoy it and recharge yourself whilst in a state of restriction. Study perhaps. If you prefer a more romantic confinement get yourself snowed in the Lakes with a larder full of food of course. To be restrained is sometimes to hold you back until you are ready, make sure you are ready when the time is right for you. Be of the time but be ready. Good Luck Pluto 178
