I want additional income. So I asked “What is earning potential of Choice A, and What is earning potential of Choice B?

CHOICE A: 28.1.2.3.4 > 3

My life plan included teaching the Alexander Technique in my senior years. Over many many years, I’ve spent a tremendous amount of money and energy in getting certification as a teacher, keeping up my skills, though I never taught as a profession. Just as I set up shop a few years ago, some jerk drove into my car and I was seriously injured, so had to give up that idea. Now, I'm pain free but would have to invest more $ and time to brush up skills. A hassle, but possible. People do teach into their very late years, even into their mid-90s, so the possibility of ongoing income -- and engagement with life-- is attractive.

I’ve read through several interpretations, what jumped out at me is Bradford’s 28.3…

”he kept trying to get his friends to call him an architect, but they only wanted to use the word “poet.”

Yes indeed, Alexander is very much about the architecture of the body but it's very difficult to explain; friends who’ve read my early attempt at fiction called it “poetic.”

28. 1 Embarking on an important enterprise -- with extreme caution
28.2 Old husband takes young wife. Advantage in every way. EXCEPT, any husband older than me would be on life support. My fabulous teacher was older by decades but now he’s dead. He was very fond of and supportive of me. Perhaps he’ll help in spirit.
Also interpreted as “a creative balance of knowledge and ability.” Ability is an issue. I feel more confident of my ability as a writer.
28.3 Sagging ridgepole, there will be evil. Misfortune I have no support.
28.4 Auspicious, but maybe not. ?????

Seems to me that Choice A may not end well – certainly difficult in the beginning, especially since no one in this area knows what it is. A marketing problem. Self-promotion is difficult for me.

CHOICE B: 38.3.6> 34

I’ve earned my living by writing. Apparently I’m good at nonfiction, but I’ve always wanted to write fiction. I asked about this particular book I’ve started, to the extent of doing fascinating research and preliminary work. This is the scarier choice—terra incognita--but also potentially most profitable—if I do it well.

CHOICE B seems more promising, if only for the very strong 34. Having my nose cut off and my oxen mutilated in line 3 and in line 6 being alone with a wagonload of (inner) demons seem familiar to anyone who writes for a living. Yeah, yeah, those guys again. It's only fear.

Neither A nor B seems like a piece of cake. But this is about money and these are my choices.

What do you think? I'd appreciate any and all insights. I'm ready to put my full attention on one or the other choice.

this is about money and these are my choices.

I like both of the casting, especially A with its suggestion of an upright posture. However, if your wish is to make money now, I don't think either is practical. Could you teach non-fiction writing at a community college? You'd have income and a stimulating contact with the young. Could you write technical manuals or the instructions that come with products that require assembly? Could you research and write articles for trade publications? The things that need to be written up seem endless.

Days grow short when you reach September

Thanks, pocossin. Coincidentally, I was just "thanking" you on another thread for the DH Lawrence poem about the snake. I really like and admire snakes:)

Wonderful that you see "upright posture" in choice A. Makes perfect sense overall, but I'd like to know how you see it.

I've spent a lifetime writing and editing for money , don't really need money in a hurry now. Retired now, it is the first time I have had the luxury of choosing what to write or whether to write or teach Alexander. Or either. I'd like to travel, be able to help my kids financially, support some causes close to my heart, none of which I can afford without more coins in the coffers.

It would take a year to complete a work of fiction, or I could use the year to brush up my Alexander skills. Maybe I'll give the book six months and then decide whether it's good enough to continue. Did you see anything in 38.3.6> 34 that says it won't work?

Thanks again for your help

Into the process of 38.6

pocossin, I found this remarkable take by Frank Kegan at the end of the Memorizing 38 thread that fits working on fiction/drama. What do you think?:

My Flux Tome name for hex 38 is Screens (Screams) Sixth line is the transition to the Next or flower of Screens.
And my corresponding Sabian Symbol Aquarius 6: The stage is lit dimly for an allegorical drama and a solitary performer carries the thread of mystery
Or taking both together:
The process of dramatic presentation requires distance and focus to create depth and perspective. This is the essence of the screen process which first isolates, then separates and ultimately delivers the amazing results for all to see. " The flower of screens is clarity of result.
Both images describe theater dramas and the point is to focus upon the effect of these representations upon the central figure carrying the action."

This feels really hopeful. Perhaps enough to invest six months in the project.

Hi, Poised:

The idea of drama fits with H.38 Opposition, but beware, 38.6 has heavy sexual connotations (which maye is another story, but take it in account) that sugest that you could solve the opposition beteen A and B and proceed with both fronts of action.

38.6 begIns with LONELY OPPOSITES or even ORPHAN OPPOSITES which can mean that the terms of opposition needs each other. Be said, they need each other like woman and man (a complementary relation be legal or free).

I wonder what should think Frank for whom I felt much affect.

Yours,

Charly

poised, this is so funny. You pointed me here from another thread where I'd mentioned getting 38.3.6-34 about a dream I had. I just checked my journal, and the only other instance of 38.3.6-34 that I recorded was in 2009, in a series of questions that went like this:

1. I was in a job I disliked and had been in for a long time, and had a sudden strong sense that "I am wasting my life" 17.1-45 (well, then, go do something else!)
2 . writing fiction? (I'd been working off and on on a YA novel) 38.3.6-34
3. [wasn't quite sure how to take that so I asked about a couple of other possibilities and got discouraging answers, including 27.3, rejecting nourishment)
4. So what should I do? 34uc -- which of course pointed right back to my 38.3.6-34 reading

As a result of that reading (and also because, like you, I'd always wanted to write fiction, and as I was in my late 40s it felt like I didn't have lots of time to waste), I focused harder on finishing that book, which was scary, hard, doubt-riddled, full of hungry ghosts and ghost-bandits for me. But! it worked out well, to the extent that I've had one book published, a couple more due out, and at least for the past couple of years I've been able to write full time (knock wood that that continues, at least for a while).

So although it was a scary and unpromising-looking reading--and it has definitely been a scary, alienated, not-at-home-here feeling process, and continues to be--it has been the right choice for me, and I'm learning and growing all the time.

CHOICE A: 28.1.2.3.4 > 3

Personally I wouldn't take this route, it looks highly unstable. Look at the change patterns, the yang pattern is 34 the yin pattern is 33. To me it looks like something you go into firing on all cylinders and come out rather dazed and lost. It looks too much like something you cannot sustain without much more support and direction. It looks like you'd need plenty of solid advice and support from others working in the field. Going it alone doesn't look great here. I mean 3 needs helpers as it's not sure where it's headed but 28 really thinks it can.....but can it ? Well maybe if you make sure you have plenty of advise and support from other practitioners. Don't try to do this all by yourself.

Hmm yes being ready to put all your attention on it shows clearly in the first option but energy and attention isn't enough there you need help too.

38.3.6>34 ? the change pattern is yang 52 yin 58. So you are coming at this from a not very involved perspective and you can progress though it by letting ideas flow outwards for others to respond to. This way is the more joyful IMO and the more interesting. It's especially interesting that Knot had this cast, that you have 58 as yin pattern, so all that too points to this option as much better IMO.

Whether you will make money I don't know but it's better to do this that may take you strange places you never went before than to exhaust yourself by getting lost in the 28>3 cast IMO.

BTW it is possible this answer leap frogs your question, by speaking of your approach to the issue of making money....already said on the 38 thread 'get weirder' lol and also don't be too easily discouraged. It looks like you may meet demons on that road as Knot did in her dream.....and Knot too is a writer....Wow !

I really like and admire snakes

I have a personal relationship with snakes and often find myself obliged to rescue them. My mongoose-like cat enjoys rounding up snakes, and I have to take them away from her. Some years ago I rescued a small rattlesnake at the back door steps. I believe it was one of the rare pygmy rattlers, and I returned it to the woods. I was reproved by my relatives for doing this.

Wonderful that you see "upright posture" in choice A. Makes perfect sense overall, but I'd like to know how you see it.

I understand the Alexander technique to be, Improve your posture by holding your head upright. The ridgepole of 28 is brought to upright by support.

Code:
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄ rest
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄ wood
▄▄ ▄▄

This is an example of the genius of the Duke of Zhou. The elderly support themselves on wood, cane or staff. You may not be so elderly, but I am approaching it. The ridgepole that is not supported eventually collapses, so it is not a trivial matter. I should point out that this hexagram is preceded by 27, the Mouth, the obligation to feed the elderly, and is followed by 29, Pit, our eventual depository. The bent back of the elderly is the aim of the Alexander technique to delay, but time conquers us all. Basically, 28 is the effort of the enfeebled to stand upright. For those who strive, it is possible. I myself have corrected many of the failings of age by Xun, that is, herbal solutions to the side effects of medication. Really, much human suffering is unnecessary, although I am as unlikely to persuade others of this as I have been unable to persuade them of the importance of the King Wen Sequence. If they don't get it in this life, may they get it in the next.

Thanks so much, pocossin, for explaining how you saw posture improvement in this hexagram. Makes perfect sense now.

Exactly. You can walk around offering the Holy Grail, and few people will take you up on it. Which is the downside of the Alexander work. If I were in Los Angeles or NYC, I'd find many clients, but here in the hinterland, it would be an uphill slog with, most likely, less than wonderful results. I might get the lame to walk, but few would care or want to pay for the service.

I gave a first lesson to quite an accomplished businesswoman who had terrible posture and the simpering mannerisms of a housemaid. She was gracefully erect, looked spectacular after the lesson, exactly like the executive she was, but when she saw herself in the mirror, she was taken aback. "My husband would leave me if I looked like this." Of course, she never came back.

Another piece of the puzzle

Very valuable insight, Charly. I've been thinking about how to handle it, or whether to handle it at all. If you were my agent or editor, you could not have given more valuable advice. While the sky falls around them and robbers attack, my heroine and her bf will somehow find time for intimacy.

As for keeping both A and B in play, I do work on myself with the Alexander Technique as I write.

Aye, there's the rub, Trojina. Alexander teachers are always working on each other, but I'm quite alone in this area. So all of the marketing, the promoting would fall on me. One excellent teacher is 85 miles away, but that's quite a drive in the winter. She's a uni professor, does not depend on Alexander for a living, so she's doing fine.

Hmm yes being ready to put all your attention on it shows clearly in the first option but energy and attention isn't enough there you need help too.

Insightful. Alexander work is about energy and attention, among other things. It's part of my life now and will always be, whether or not I teach it to others.

38.3.6>34 ? the change pattern is yang 52 yin 58. So you are coming at this from a not very involved perspective and you can progress though it by letting ideas flow outwards for others to respond to. It's especially interesting that Knot had this cast, that you have 58 as yin pattern, so all that too points to this option as much better IMO.

Right again. I'm not yet fully involved; it's material I've been schlepping around for years, I've written exactly five pages, but gee whiz, they're good. And the rest of the story is developing in my "writing zone," which resembles a deep pool with a muddy bottom. Occasionally things bubble up from the murky depths. Enough bubbles now to begin organizing in detail, creating outlines, fleshing out characters, developing, developing, developing and finally, with a fair wind, writing words, sentences, even pages. I expect to spend at least 60 days on prep work. I do have a plan, a "way" to do this.

Also, I do have at least one friend to knock ideas around with. Joined and left a writers' group, as they really were amateurs who'd never be helpful to me, but there's another group in town that might be helpful. I'll check it out. But basically, I don't put much faith in others' opinions. I've been in this business all my life and only two people in town have published more stuff than I have, both of them men.. One a well-known romance writer, which is not where I'm going; the other an Indian who writes Indian life stuff. He's quite good, but probably no help to me….a friend of my ex's, another reason to stay away.

Whether you will make money I don't know but it's better to do this that may take you strange places you never went before

Uncanny. A big reason I want to do this is the NEED to travel to strange places. My inspiration is an author, now dead, who traveled to strange places for a few months every year, came home and wrote novels set in those places. Her travel was, of course, tax deductible. And her books were very entertaining.

Yep. Book One starts with one of those weird, demonlike characters everyone will love to hate.

I'm really getting jazzed now, Trojina. Thanks so much for all you've invested in this topic -- and others. Much appreciated. Yes, the Knot coincidence is no coincidence. Wow indeed. I'm going to respond to her now.

No Coincidences

poised, this is so funny. You pointed me here from another thread where I'd mentioned getting 38.3.6-34 about a dream I had. I just checked my journal, and the only other instance of 38.3.6-34 that I recorded was in 2009, in a series of questions that went like this:

Knot, what can I say? Goose bump time. I've had a lot of outstanding commentary on this thread but yours seals the deal. In the months ahead, slogging through the ups and downs of writing fiction for the first time, I will keep your 38.3.6-34 SUCCESS in mind -- and your process of getting there over the road strewn with ghosts.

I always think of Yi as an ancient Chinese sage watching over us, wondering wtf we're up to now, trying to point out driving conditions on the journey ahead. He's really smiling now…

I wish you the greatest success in writing and whatever else you may wish to do. Please stay in touch.

And if you care to share the name of your book(s), you can contact me by clarity mail. I'd be thrilled to read it. I'm in USA, can get it on Amazon.
