I've been looking at the Wilhelm interpretation of hexagram 5 and feeling a bit cross-eyed. The Judgement and the Image seem to be about how to be patient while waiting for something you are hoping for, like rain:

Waiting. If you are sincere,
You have light and success.
Perseverance brings good fortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
Thus the superior man eats and drinks,
Is joyous and of good cheer.

So it seems to be saying, "You know the rain is going to come eventually so don't worry about it." On the other hand, the lines seem to be a pep talk on the importance of maintaining a positive attitude while anticipating something you don't want at all. The lines read like an early version of The Law of Attraction saying that if you focus on trouble you'll attract it, whereas if you stay positive the trouble you were anticipating will morph into three uninvited guests bringing an opportunity for good fortune.

5.1
Waiting in the meadow.
It furthers one to abide in what endures.
No blame.

Sounds like "Keep calm and carry on" or "Don't trouble trouble and trouble wont trouble you."

5.2
Waiting in the sand.
There is some gossip.
The end brings good fortune.

Now the awareness of trouble starts to seep in but it's still at a distance, sort of like lying on the beach in the sand reading about the troubles of others in a gossip magazine.

5.3
Waiting in the mud
Brings the arrival of the enemy.

But to continue to wallow in this past-time programs the mind to see enemies appearing in real life.

5.4
Waiting in blood.
Get out of the pit.

Murders! Thieves! We're all going to die!!!
Get out of that mood, calm down, quit worrying.

5.5
Waiting and meat and drink.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

Eat drink and be merry. Stay focused on the positive.

5.6
Three uninvited guests arrive.
Honor them, and in the end there will be good fortune.

So all in all the lines seem to be saying when you are worried about how something in the future, don't focus on what might go wrong, focus on what is good in your life right now. Then when the future does arrive you'll be able to respond in a way that accentuates the positive.

Thus my question is, if you receive 5. Waiting in a reading are you being encouraged to relax and not worry because what you're wanting - like rain - will arrive in due time. Or does getting 5 mean that there is something ahead that you don't want - like trouble - but if you don't worry you will be able to handle it?

Waiting is kind of an "in the meantime" thing, I think. Kinda like "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans..." Or something.

I get 5 rather often regarding my big dreams, so I do treat it as relax, your time will come.

Also I had some experiences where I got 5 with different lines (not only 6) and it really meant - wait, the situation will resolve in some unexpected way. It took from 30 minutes to a couple of hours to resolve the issue. Like I bought a ticket for metro(underground) but then it turned out that a friend will give me a ride.

Richmond describes 5 as 'Lack of a path'. With lines 1 to 5 showing the increase of intuition and awareness, and in 6th you fully accept the idea that when it's the right time - you'll know and be ready to act.

5.2 sand - shifting circumstances
5.3 stuck because of a premature start, false-start (followed a wrong sign, failed line 6).
5.4 hard to keep calm but please continue
5.5 the acceptance of the need to wait comes, now one is ready to watch for the signs
5.6 Life knocks on your door, but your travel bags are already packed, after welcoming tea you go out the door holding hands with Life :)

Lately I find that Legge's version is closer to original. He doesn't say get out and now.
5.4 → 43 (Separation), Legge:
Shows its subject waiting in (the place of) blood.
But he will get out of the cavern.

There is a promise that situation will resolve, don't take it too close to your heart.
First it was distant border, then sand, then mud, then one's own blood - so close to the mind and heart.

[11:39AM] When will my order be ready for pickup at the store? 5.1.2.4.5 → 62

The item should arrive from the central store to the one closer to me not later than 1pm.

I guess Yi is saying in the middle of the day, looking at the the yang lines of 62.
Taking a day as a 8am-8pm interval, 2 middle lines would be 12pm-2pm-4pm?

And of course in the spirit of hex 5 - attend to other things you need to do, waiting at home (5.1 distant border), ready to go as soon as it arrives (5.2 waiting on sand, volatile).
Also interesting that there are 2 pairs of complementary lines 1-4 and 2-5.
1 I'm waiting - 4 item is emerging from the pit(storage facility)
2 I'm ready to go - 5 it's already there, standing among other items.

Maybe I should go right now? Take a long walk (about an hour), visit some stores on the way.
5.3.5.6 → 41

Nope :)
Wait for the sms/call from the pickup point (5.6), do your things in the mean time.

5.3 does speak of 'arrival' of the enemy though while i'm going through 'muddy' streets after snowfall.

Went there, visiting some shops along the way, asked the clerk to let me examine the item - nasty visual defect right on the front panel. :brickwall:
Ordered another one for tomorrow. Waiting again :(

The second one was good, no defects, bought it. It even arrived one hour earlier, at 11:26am.

Wow, I'm going to give 62. Attention to Detail a whole new respect for alerting that things need to be carefully reviewed before we assume we've reached completion.

So how do you break down those readings you got, Ashteroid? I mean I can see Waiting - Attention to Detail as indicating something about waiting and then needing to check the details and 5 > 41 as meaning your Waiting time would be Decreased and it did arrive an hour earlier, but I'm wondering if you see meaning in the individual lines? Do you think 5.4 was simply telling you not to obsess about it or was it alerting you to the fact there was a real problem or???

This is the most important thing to understand about 05.
I've used the phrase maximize the meantime.
Don't waste the opportunity to do something better with your time while you wait.

"Maximise the meantime" - yes, and very nicely phrased. It is our ATTITUDE to the waiting process that is being addressed. The hexagram presents an apparent dichotomy from the outset - there is the assurance of success IF we persevere but the lines present us with an array of problems and dangers. These are the problems and dangers raised by a mind incapable of waiting, a mind incapable of perseverance - the doubts and uncertainties it raises destroy our ability to persevere, our ability to wait. Our most effective weapon against this negativity is to maintain our direction by keeping ourselves occupied in purposeful work.

Or perhaps from a somewhat Zen view...

"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."
