Today I found out one of my closest friends was diagnosed with lymphoma and I asked what I can do to help him beat this and received 56 unchanging. Any help interpreting this?

My thoughts are that Yi is reminding me that I have minimal influence here, that I am just a "traveller" passing through this experience. That, instead of trying to make a change, I ought to adapt to the circumstances and add my gifts as the situation warrants them.

If your friend ever needs any help with actual travel (back and forth to doctor's appointments or treatments), that might fit.

There's probably a lot of different possibilities. Lately I've been wondering how often we're meant to understand readings right away, vs. just keeping them in mind until something's in front of us which we can recognize. (Maybe that's "quite often.")

That goes along with what you said, anyway - "add your gifts as the situation warrants."

I think you have this exactly right. Too often when someone is diagnosed with a serious illness others immediately want to force their views on them about what they ought to do and how they should 'beat' this. Very often this isn't helpful and is more for the benefit of the friend than the sick person. The best thing a person can offer IMO is simply to accompany their friend, be there when needed, adapting to what is required.

Thank you all for your thoughts on the matter. Also, lisa, I really identify with your thoughts that readings aren't necessarily a reference to the immediate situation, but a guide as it unfolds before you. Thank you again for your input.

Ah...that might be how the story of King Hai that Hilary tells in her book applies. Instead of blending in, King Hai (a nomadic king) exerted his personality and tried to do too much (he danced, and seduced the local king's wife) - this resulted in him being executed.

Pushing one's own agenda or ideas, as Trojina described, might be the much-less-dramatic version of that.

Oops, crossed posts with you, Corvinnclaedh.

I think Trojina's explanation (which as she said was what you thought in the first place) makes it less likely this is a "recognition" thing. It's probably just plain advice, as you both are saying.

I think you may also be right Lisa. the reading may unfold in time to reveal other things too.

Could it be that the I Ching is gently hinting that your friend may not be able to "beat this" but that you may take comfort - and comfort him - if you embrace the idea that we are all Travelers here and eventually we will all be moving on and yet we can take great joy in the time we do have together? In other words, don't resist speaking frankly about the seriousness and possible consequences of his condition. He may be The Traveler who will be moving on and perhaps it would be very helpful to him on a soul level to be able to talk about this with you.

Perhaps getting the hexagram unchanging means he will not be Traveling on anytime soon.

The book "Tuesdays with Morrie" may be helpful.
