I'd like to share my recent experience as a small gesture of my appreciation towards this community, although it's not really a pleasant one.
My dad had been sick and was taken to the ER, looking back I didn't know why I asked this question but I asked Yi "How long does my dad have?" I got 10UC. My interpretation at the time was although his condition was tough but he would have gotten through with this and would have been recovered. He passed away two days later.

Thank you for posting your experience and I'm very sorry to hear of this.

You reminded me to post a 9uc experience recently regarding my aunt dying, the pair to 10 of course.

Answers from Yi regarding illness and death really highlight that the perspective Yi answers from is beyond ours. For example when I asked about my aunt's prognosis etc I had 12.6 several times which led me to think she would overthrow her illness or it would turn out to be something that could simply be removed. But she had terminal cancer and died. From Yi's perspective of course death can be a positive thing for the person than we might understand.

If you look through these threads you can see instances of death where it wouldn't have been obvious that was what Yi was saying. I think there are some examples in the 11uc thread and the 62uc.

I can't say how the 10 applied to your dad's death. I guess the tiger was the dangerous situation he was in but you asked how long he had....and that reminds me of a 55uc example I must post regarding the same question.

I agree with you!! I thought I'd like to share my question the next day "can my dad go home?" I got 58.4.5>19. Again, I thought although the situation was dangerous but the relating hex 19 looked positive. Either I completely misinterpreted Yi's message or as you indicated above, when it comes to illness or death, it is beyond our realm.

In hindsight, looking more and found editor’s note (James DeKorne website), there's a statement “inspiration in sincerity toward the fallen”, could this indicate that due to his condition, we sincerely prayed and he was gone very quickly (going home). Also, Legge noted that situation is perilous!!

Well we can't see the whole picture so to speak. Death for the one who dies may be a totally blissful release, a step into freedom from all the cares and pains they have endured through their earthly life. But if we love them obviously we don't want them to go but in the bigger scheme of things they bless us by their departure. Personally I tend to find in some ways they can be even closer to us in spirit after they passed over than before. But that all depends on your view of life after death or not.

To me 58.4.5>19 looks a little like misplaced faith, well line 5 is. You wanted him to go home bu the was on the brink of going somewhere else in line 4. 19 as the relating hexagram can show what it is that approaches, so what approaches here is 58. Hard to interpret because of course this involves a death and things I/we cannot comprehend.

Re 19 looking 'positive' seeing hexagrams as negative or positive can hinder understanding as explained by Bradford here https://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?8682-Positive-and-Negative-Hexagrams

There is always a peril in hexagram 10, that's the tiger we must be careful not to step on. How that applied to 'How long does my dad have ?' could have meant for you 'this is something that feels very scary that you have to deal with, a tiger. Don't forget 10 is also called 'treading', taking steps behind the tiger. You were maybe fearfully and cautiously following your father's progress and it was perilous. You would have been very tentative.

Also in asking 'how long does he have left' 10 could be showing him treading a very perilous path, it's dangerous, life itself in the balance here in this case

However I cannot say I fully understand why you got this answer and I shouldn't think I ever will. But in time you may know why you got this answer because often understanding of answers unfolds over time, especially with 'big' questions like this

Thank you for the above link as regards to positive and negative. I tend to "rush" to these connotations when I first glance at the primary and relating hexagrams, especially when I see 23 when asking about relationship questions. I see the beauty in Iching is that in any scenario, there's an advice for it. It's not just merely "fortunetelling". Being able to follow the advice successfully or not, that's up to you and your will, but I least I don't feel like I'm stuck to a fixed outcome.

As regards to 10UC and 58 in this case, I can only guess in hindsight. By the way, I did see a post of someone named Chris, he mentioned about 10 and 58 are common or something like that in binary....more food for thought.

I used to consider hexagram 10 a disheartening omen that merely warned of dangers; and while the judgement says the tiger doesn't bite, seemed like it discouraged me from pursuing the intended goal. It doesn't.
The 10th hexagram- "Treading"; "Worrying the Tiger"- talks about a risky path you HAVE to take, there will be no advance otherwise. I've received it- whether changing, unchanging, as the primary or result hexagram- often when I asked about matters of love. I had to step in this always risky territory if I wanted anything to happen. In this regard, it resembles hexagram 29 that invites to find one's way through the chasms by having confidence in what's true for the heart: you shouldn't "sit at the bottom of chasm", instead have to learn to swim.

I think 10uc could be called Truth as it speaks to issues around "fearing the truth" and "speaking truth to authority" and "the truth will set you free." .

Not sure about the etiquette of picking something like this up again two years later - will of course remove it if it's upsetting.

Wonder if at the time of casting the outcome was truly unknowable? Maybe that was the unchangingness. Hilary has said unchanging readings can sometimes feel like questions: "Treading, and then... ?"

You seem to be veering generally into questions about the nature of unchanging hexagrams. There was a special thread for that right at the beginning here

There, before we started a thread for each hexagram, we just discussed ideas about uc hexagrams in general

Example without detail - got a 10uc reading myself recently which I'm pretty sure means I'll always have to tiptoe around the thing in question, for fear of being eaten. What I asked about is fundamental enough that I can't see how change is possible, so unchanging in that way.

This one's easy to sense, though; it doesn't feel like an interpretation dilemma. I'd asked, "How can I deal with this better?" "Just the way it is, sorry, nothing to do about it," I think Yi's telling me.

I find it useful to see the "tiger" as representing Truth and the ultimate power of truth. The judgement assures us that if we stick with the truth we wont get bitten, but how much truth can you handle? Cause ohh..sometimes you really have to be careful and tiptoe around it a bit. Interesting how the Image - which tends to tell us how to deal with the situation described in the judgement - advises sorting. Maybe a hint that the world is made up of a wide spectrum of truths, from eternal truths ("Life goes on forever") to "white lies" ("You will live forever") and what's true for you may not be true for me so we need to wisely pick our battles. Perhaps knowing our personal truth is what makes it possible to have 11.Peace because we've learned how to stay on our own path even when surrounded with so many others.

More thoughts..
"Accept the truth" seems to me to be the short answer for 10uc.
Another possibility is to think of 10 representing the power of love, or maybe "tough love".

Just got 10UC. Somewhere in this thread, the movie Life of Pi was mentioned. I have used a scene from the movie as analogy a lot recently, so for me individually at this moment in time I relate the tiger in Hex 10 to the tiger in Life of Pi.

tiger = survival instinct

(an equation the narrator suggests to the reader / viewer in the end)

situation:

there was a shipwreck. a 13-year old boy is in a life boat with a hyena and a wounded zebra. the hyena attacks the zebra. it is not evil. it's just following its own nature. an orangutan who also survived the shipwreck on a piece of plywood enters the lifeboat and rushes to the zebra's aid. the zebra dies. the hyena kills the orangutan. finally, a tiger darts out of hiding and kills the hyena.

it is great to be like the orangutan and help the wounded zebras of the world, but you can't do that when there's a hyena in the room and the situation calls for a tiger ...

I get 10uc quite a lot, and it's been on my mind recently, so I came here to read through. I see so many people here saying they see it as a bad or painful omen, but that hasn't been the case for me, for the most part--or, well, sometimes it has but the 10uc shows me there is some great power at work in the situation. Here is a (much shortened!) list of some of my 10uc casts. The main thing they seem to have in common is that there is some great power or energy involved:

- I've recently developed a little personal meditative technique that when I do it shifts my energy dramatically from its usual jangly jittery buzz around my head and neck to more of a slow-honey feel. I asked yi "what would you call that meditation?" and got 10uc. (This is a sort of Rosetta Stone question, as I think of them--it gives me a point of reference now when I see 10uc)
- When I was a senior in high school, my boyfriend, a guy I really loved, died. Last year--40+ years later-- I was all IV'd up waiting for a minor medical procedure. They had music on and a song he loved came on, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," which always makes me think of him. I was suddenly overwhelmed by that old sadness, flooded with grief, and somehow felt his presence. When I recovered I asked the yi "what was that?" 10uc.
- at the beginning of the pandemic "How will the crashing?? economy affect me? 10uc [it was touch and go, especially for my husband's theater, but we were absolutely fine]
- 10uc as weekly reading for the week my father died
- really strange experience I had a few months before my father died when I was with my him and all five of my siblings for what turned out to be the last time. We were at a club watching my youngest brother perform his music, and I had this very strong and strange sense that my late mother was watching through me somehow? Among other things, I was overwhelmed by feelings of a ferocious, quite tigerish love for my brother (my mother's fave, her baby) that I have never felt for anyone--I mean I love my brother and I have loved people deeply but this was crazy, so overwhelming I sat there for 45 minutes with tears pouring down my face (freaking my brother out! as he told me later). (I don't have children, for the record--maybe it would be a more familiar feeling if I had.) Whatever it was, it was one of the weirdest experiences of my life. Asked yi "what was that?" and got 10uc
- Twice I got 10uc for things I badly badly wanted to happen, obsessively wanted, made myself sick over, which did not happen. I love what hilary writes about here: "Look to the power and intensity you are drawing into the situation -- its specific danger is there, and also its specific gift." How MUCH I wanted these things does tell me something important I think.
- What do I need to know about Brigid? (I'd had a powerful experience at Brigid's Well in Ireland) 10uc
- a worried question about "my financial situation" got 10uc-- four months before I received a life-changing windfall in the form of a book deal

Writing these out I see so many of these examples say "overwhelmed" "powerful" "obsessed" or involve floods of tears! hahahah I guess for some people that might not seem so "good omen" but 10uc in particular does seem to me to move in a different paradigm than good & bad. Even when I don't "get what I want" I get some sense of the power around the question.

^ this example makes me think of martial arts. to survive danger, becoming extremely present, aware. mistaking hypervigiliance for awareness can led to disaster as its actually that kind of "jittery" distracted energy where a great martial artist can enter the "slow honey" state of no-action within action. resting within movement, etc.
staying calm during danger while paradoxical to the nervous system, heightens the likelihood of surviving.

I came to this thread after casting 10 uc for a "big" question that...well I don't know if it was wise to ask it so casually. It was "do I have what it takes to be an artist"

Oddly enough, I don't feel much sadness or panic as usual when receiving what seems like a "no" from Yi - its not a go-ahead exactly, which would be nice and was what I hoped for. But it is pointing to a very powerful obsessive desire that has eaten at me since I was knee high to a grasshopper.

many possible interpretations, but its uncanny because I have long used a mental metaphor of a tiger to express the relationship with my own sexuality and creativity, which is quite intense and overwhelming. so many ideas, deep cravings, hunger, desire, emotions that develop secondary emotions of rage at being unexpressed.

I used to say my energies are like being given a tiger in lieu of a housecat, but no instruction manual for what a tiger needs and everyone around you is aggravated its not behaving like a nice domestic kitty cat - what do you do with that! Mr. Tiger has consequently been locked in the basement for a very long time and is not well-behaved. Like Daenarys Targaryen's dragons in that HBO epic Game of Thrones. Sometimes what is most powerful is what gets locked up out of fear.....and that can be a perfect storm.

There's no promise of success in the answer but I don't see it as bad anyways. Time will tell. And yes, I know this probably belongs in the Shared Interpretations thread! :p
