Your thoughts on Hex44 and money remind me instantly of an old german punk rock song written by a band from the "DDR", the former political east, in times when the "iron curtain" still existed. Their translated name is something like "slime germ" ;)

Geldschein (banknote) by Schleimkeim
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPsvQ-x-HpU

Translation:

I am a sweet banknote
Going from hand to hand
Changing owners all the time
But not the imprinted country
I've been to Hong Kong before.
And in Vienna
Even in an Inter-Shop
In East Berlin.

I am a sweet banknote
Stay faithful to nothing
Whether I'm a pity for people today
Or if they are happy because of me
That's out of my power
That wouldn't make any sense either
Since I'm just a means to an end.

Being a banknote
Means being involved in good and bad things.
Today they buy flowers for their sweetheart with me
But tomorrow I can be the reward for an atrocity.

I am a sweet banknote
My home is the bank
There lies almost every currency
Safe in the safe
Dollars from the USA
And Franks from Switzerland
The more you have of us
The greedier you become.

I am a sweet banknote
I'm in traffic.
I determine the direction
The rest runs after
Man, you are a pimp
Send me on the street
They say, interest is the profit
They'll collect it for me

Being a banknote
Means being involved in good and bad things.
Today they buy flowers for their sweetheart with me
But tomorrow I can be the reward for an atrocity.

For everything you need, you have to give something.
You'll get nothing for free in this world.
You fight for survival every day
Your helper is the sweet money
No one believes that objects live
That's the way it is in this wide world
But there is one exception
I'm talking about the sweet money
I'm talking about the sweet money
I'm talking about the sweet money.

Slime Germ - AWESOME NAME!

What do you think they are referring to at the end of the song as being "the sweet money" @equinox;?

You know what is frustrating about writing more about this topic? It's what usually happens with 44 - I return to think more upon it, and find it to be as slippery and incomorehensible as it always is, like trying to juggle a slime germ. You can't marry this woman? Indeed I can't because she's as slippery as a bloody apparition!

Your mention of Bloom's book, @Trojina; reminds me of another, Sacred Economics by Charles Eisenstein. It would be one of my desert island books simply because it takes this horrid, abstracted thing which slips through our hands (44?) and shows what it was in the past - a means for connecting people and communities in the flow of life.

I can't recco it highly enough. Charles walks his talk - I have done an online course of his for free as he offered scholarships to low income people. His mind is brilliant - trained mathematician - and his heart is beautiful. He even offers the book for free on his site, though it's deffo worth paying for - http://sacred-economics.com/

So maybe the Yi is saying money has degenerated into an abstraction that slips through our hands - its been adulterated. When really it should be the centre of a gift economy, a regal monarch, something which can't be taken and hoarded and married but which is meant to flow? (Charles talks in his book about the history of something called demurrage, which is basically a way of causing money to devalue when it's hoarded. Sort of creating a system where it "rots" like compost if you sit on it, when it's meant to be used as a vehicle of flow for everyone).

I think the refer to the seductiveness of money, seductive just like the powerful maiden in Hex 44.

Yes most probably you can only avoid the money to slip out of your hands if you throw it away at the right time!

Just received 44 UC as my morning hex two days in a row. I had plans this weekend and my gall bladder is giving me issues. I was doing really well with it (had a flare up last month detoxed for a week and was doing better) and a friend of mine gave me some homemade wine and I figured out he used bread yeast to make it. I'm celiac and well now I get to start all over again.

Have your gall bladder out and save yourself some misery.

I'm very anti- surgery unless its life threatening. Changing my behavior, while difficult and full of misery, is something I'm willing to do. I work in healthcare and honestly don't believe in 85% of what is done to people. I agree with Bones on Star Trek ” it's barbaric". ;)

A recent short video Hilary made which helps explain the Image in 44 and as the Image seems especially helpful in the unchanging hexagrams here it is

I am a bit disheartened by some of the gender commentary embedded in the Iching and the discussions around it, I like to believe that men and women are not fundamentally that different and all working with similar strengths, flaws, and capacities, but hex 44 is the only one that does feel tied to my gender. I've always been a somewhat yang-energy male, I was raised by an amazing single mother who taught me to be sensitive, nurturing, and emotionally aware internally and externally, traits that most people would associate more with the feminine then the masculine. I recently started dating again and I received 44 unchanging when I asked what I should be doing in order to find a good match.
Human sexuality in my estimation is the realm in which we have the greatest capacity to heal each other or harm each other. 44 to me has always spoken to the darker element of sexuality, the side that represents slightly more hedonistic, selfish, inconsiderate, and often harmful behavior, and this hex has always felt punishing to me as a yang-energy, more reserved and sensitive male. I am 6'2" (188cm), fairly athletic and youngish (30), so while I am large physically, this hex has always made me feel very aware of not being a dominant presence like the man mentioned in GoldenN's story (on page 7 I believe). I hope I've articulated this in a way that makes sense.

I think more often than not, the commentary should be taken as a metaphor; even in the case of 44th hexagram. And the way you have interpreted it, though still sexual, isn't the literal way many users see the hexagram: if they were you they probably read it as "avoid strong women" and such.
If I was to apply the I Ching gender-based lines in a literal way I would stop consulting it, as the I Ching wouldn't fit in my world and view of gender relationships, love, etc at all if not to be taken metaphorically.

I recently started dating again and I received 44 unchanging when I asked what I should be doing in order to find a good match.

A traditional name for 44 is Coming to Meet
Which means Go out and meet people.
You know, dates. or places events where you can MEET people.
It is that simple.
(you didn't ask for a judgement or evaluation, so you can safely ignore the worrisome judgement in 44, it doesn't apply.)

Don't be put off by the language of Yi, nothing in it is really sexist.

A tangible result.

I was waiting for the guy to come to fix the bathroom tiles, he was a bit late.

Is the tiling guy going to come? I asked.
44 uc. Encounter. I took this as a yes.
He showed up, maybe 10 minutes later... no problems...!

Before going out this evening to grab some dinner, I idly decided to ask the I Ching for some advice. The context is that it's the winter solstice here in Australia, so it was going to be probably very cold...

And what was more appropriate than an unchanging 44, lol... the bitter cold was indeed a maiden too powerful for me to handle. Or at least, handle for too long.

I ended up a quarter of the way to my original destination, before coming to realization that the cold was too much for me to handle for long, so I settled on the closest takeaway to me, and hurried home.

„no use to marry this woman” has come especially useful in readings when 44 was telling me, basically, it’s no use to entertain this idea. the idea being yin, something in the depths, something passive vs yang something outside, taking action. no use to take action on the thought i’m asking about. simple. had quite a few readings like that which i don’t remember anymore.

other ones - when i wanted to avoid yearly neighbours gathering, turned out to mean we’d come to meet and coincidentally we met on the staircase, i explained i wouldn’t be participating (i guess that was me being strong) after which i returned home and didn’t need to think about it anymore. the other time ran into a guy i knew briefly from a shop, we would actually run into each other quite often, usually when he was walking around with his kid, but nothing flirty, just friendly, though on that occasion he actually complimented me on something and we exchanged a few words. once i returned home i asked what was that about and got 44. didn’t think more about it. in both cases i feel like 44 had more to do with just a casual meeting and was immediately followed by 24 (the complementary hexagram to 44), in the sense of returning to self (home). and nothing with the mythical „powerful” maiden. as to temptation, i don’t know, maybe they thought me attractive.

somehow i can’t think of any other hexagram with so much bad rep. yet there are plenty connotations with this one poor 44. in my own relationship readings (don’t remember exact questions, but there were times that also got me thinking how am i this 44 woman here) it came to mean simply that i didn’t want to marry. and it was equally useful to me and my partner not to marry or to stop „coupling”. i was open about it, that’s why we split. to be honest, i just felt the need to „return” to myself (24). if the girl’s strong enough to support all those active forces, she’s definitely strong enough to support herself. in the Secret of the Golden Flower 24 is also invitation to spiritual practice, yet another reason why i can’t see anything inherently „wrong” with 44.

when looking at the hex from male’s perspective (yang, that what’s above, closer to heaven vs yin, that what is below, closer to earth), from top to bottom, there’s this one yin line approaching 5 yang lines. it sure takes some strength to meet those 5 „guys” at once. and having 5 potential suitors sure doesn’t sound like a marriage material. from the female’s perspective however (looking at the hexagram from the bottom up), it’s the 5 yang lines approaching this one yin line, or at least being supported by it, if not pressing on it. thus no use to marry makes sense for both parties, i guess.

44uc came up for me when asking about an undesirable behavior I'd been engaging with- namely getting into political arguments on YouTube's comment section. Youtube is like a harsher, more vile version of Twitter since many people are anonymous and are willing to roll in the mud rhetorically. I became a bit addicted to getting into arguments and became resentful and mocking- it started to give me quite a bit anxiety (especially given that this was during the 2020 election in the US). Seeing negative comments or conspiratorial stuff on videos would trigger my anxiety as well.

I asked what I need to know about this behavior- 44uc

Definitely something powerful that I had no hope to control. I think social media generally gives people an outlet for their unaddressed emotions. I installed a browser extension that hides YouTube comments and haven't looked back.

In relationships I've had it come up when asking about specific people I was interested in. I didn't really read into it beyond "avoid that person".

Hmm. I can't think of anything more depressing than the Song dynasty interpretation of 44 (as presented by Wilhelm). Somehow, the "powerful woman" turns into a metaphor for the inferior man, who is only a threat because the five superior men above her/him fail to take a stern stand. Blech. What an ugly interpretation that is!

The rise of the inferior element is pictured here in the image of a bold girl who lightly surrenders herself and thus seizes power. This would not be possible if the strong and light-giving element had not in turn come halfway. The inferior thing seems so harmless and inviting that a man delights in it; it looks so small and weak that he imagines he may dally with it and come to no harm.

The inferior man rises only because the superior man does not regard him as dangerous and so lends him power. If he were resisted from the first, he could never gain influence.

Steve Marshall says the original meaning of the tag is "copulation." Hilary has it as "coupling," which retains some of the same meaning, but broader and less specific. You can see how it could be glossed as "encounter" or "coming to meet."

I’m new to this forum but I wanted to share my experiences with certain hexagrams. I received this reading when asking whether or not my husband would get a certain job he applied for. There was a lot of pressure he ended up doing 3 interviews he got to the final three interviewees but unfortunately he wasn’t picked! So much hullabaloo. In the end the he got a job with a much better company we are very happy all worked out in the end. So the job I asked about was truly 44 unchanging. Don’t take this woman even tho she’s temping. Lol
