I recall reading something about the I Ching being useful for determining causes of illness, and thus allowing for determining appropriate treatments.

How does this work, and what resources can I use to understand how to parse such a reading?

It's better to see a doctor.

I've found though,
Yi to be accurate with prognosis,
as in 'will there be improvement'
"How will things progress with this condition."

Yi even can say "take no medicine'
I think it is really just a matter of being fluent with Yi, there is no shortcut to comprehension and no diagnosis categories.

There are likely some systems created much later that link the elements and TCM to Yi,
but I've no need for them.

There are many ways to do that. Here is for example, interesting examples read by Mei Hua practitioner, getting details that usually can only get with Liu Yao or one of the supreme/ancient 3(may need a free registrations to read some of the medicine ones).

And there is a lot of information in there and a little in here, also much more in Jlims and other forums, about ways, from QMDJ to Liu Yao and others for health, so if you are interested look around, shouldn't be hard to find.

Lately in Jlims forums we have gone in great detail on health cases... Yet TCM is very big, if you don't know the important meridians and channels or at least the relation of the organs to the elements and polarities, the spirits of the organs and everything else all this will be far out of reach, in my humble opinion. In China this parts of the systems are more a profession then something someone does for fun, and the amount of stuff that we need to memories is a lot(as all this won't work very well without bazi too).

Valmar, I am curious, what do you want to do with this? Are you wanting to do self-diagnosis and treatment? Possibly on an existing condition? And if so, do you have any expertise in medicine - western, traditional, or otherwise?

Some acupuncture practitioner claims that their practice is based on yijing, some of them seems to call it "yijing acupuncture"... When I think of what've seen, my question is how to limit oneself to a certain view or idea, and that when we are using, us western people, such a technology with our western mind, we will have the limits of our believes. There is a use of all chinese mantics in a way of predicting health, and answers questions asked, and perhaps to restore more harmony with the Dao. By the way, one acupuncturist I heard of use Ji Men Dun Jia for health. Harmen teaches the use of Wen Wan gua to in such this way also. This brings perspective.

I've found that what Yi can tell me about medical issues is directly proportional to my understanding of medicine. For instance, Hexagram 48 might remind me of heart function; Hexagram 28 might remind me of the spine. But I'd need a detailed knowledge of spines and hearts to be able to make real use of the readings.

IOW, I think Freedda is wise to ask if you have medical knowledge to back up your skill with readings.
