  1. Background and context for reading: I want to move to a new city, start a new career, be more fulfilled in life
  2. The question I asked, word for word: "What do I most need to leave behind?"
  3. The answer Yi gave: 14.1.3 to 64
  4. My own feelings and thoughts about the answer: I'm not sure because I'm so new to this.

Hello Heather and welcome. Here are a few ideas that come to mind.

What do I most need to leave behind?"
The answer: 14.1.3 to 64

Line 14.1 'No interaction with what is harmful, In no way at fault, So that hardship is not a mistake.'

It makes me think, is there some danger (a person, a situation, a toxic job) that you need to leave behind?

And .... Sometimes just moving doesn't change what is toxic or harmful to us or within us - after all, "wherever we go, there we (still) are." So, in your case this may take a bit of hard work - even spiritual work or working on yourself: it may not just be that moving away will leave behind what is 'harmful'.

Line 14.3: 'A prince makes a summer offering to the son of heaven. Small people are in no way capable of this.'

I wonder - and this might be a stretch on my part - are there any 'displays' of wealth (great possessions, summer offerings) - maybe things you can't really afford or that are beyond your means - that you need to leave behind? Or perhaps there are other big and perhaps seemingly important things - big ideas, big plans, stuff you spend money on - that are not really useful for you?

My sense is that you may want to start small, and be willing to expose yourself (like a turtle peeking out from her shell) - you may want to be the 'commoner' (the 'small person') and not the princess. This brings to mind Mark Twain's novel, The Prince and the Pauper - where the young prince could really only know his subjects and kingdom by leaving behind the confines of his protective castle (his Great Possessions). To leave these big 'things' behind may mean exposing yourself, maybe facing fears, or a deep sadness, or sense of uncertainty you may have.

I hope that's of some use. But please, only take what makes sense or seems true or helpful for you.

Best, D

Heather, you quoted me, but didn't add anything? (Just a beginner's error, no worries). But is there something you wanted to add or comment on? Best, D (You can always go back and edit your post).

Thanks for your reply, D.
I really appreciate it.
Here are the thoughts I had from your response:

1) I think the danger I need to leave behind is the city of Albuquerque, where I live. There have been 35 homicides in the city already this year. But I agree with you that "wherever you go, there you are" so I am and will think about how I can best work on myself.

2) I don't have items that display great wealth but maybe I squander my free time. Maybe my free time needs to be put to higher use. I can afford to sacrifice more time and effort toward my goals.

Thank you and I welcome your reply if you have any other thoughts about my reading.

It's so interesting I Ching picked up on harm / danger because this is what's going on in my city:
Candlelight vigil to bring attention to homicides numbers in Albuquerque

I have not heard about that until now. I have spent a lot of time in NM, but mainly around Santa Fe. I have mostly passed through Albuquerque, landing at the airport there, and then either renting a car or taking the train to SF! I have visited Petroglyph National Monument however, a most wonderful and magical place. My sense is the crime and violence there is mostly drug and gang related? Too bad. I supposed you can always move to Santa Fe or Taos. Or maybe to Farmington, or Truth or Consequences, or Roswell?

Also a 'newbie FYI' - in the future, if you want to, you can cull or edit anything you quote, if you don't want to quote the whole thing.

The question I asked, word for word: "What do I most need to leave behind?"
14.1.3>64
another way of looking at reading:

I dont know what exactly you most need to leave behind, but....

translating into words the central message of the reading 14.1.3>64

"in the search for a new path, where everything is uncertain, how to share my wealth(expertize, know how), if no one knows me, if my wealth is hidden because there is not yet a group (a work group?) that is in tune with me and what I have to offer? "

line1- from the start, preserve your essence and not associate yourself with something less proper and with the potential to tarnish the wealth you have to share

line 3- in sharing your wealth, take a careful path where your integrity in sharing that wealth will always be present.

How do you take lines 1 and 3 into account in a new environment, starting from scratch, where you are not known and also do not have a group in tune with you, where you can share wealth and potentially be seen as a threat/competition?

Hex 14 always implies a group of people both to give and to receive!

"Background and context for reading: I want to move to a new city, start a new career, be more fulfilled in life"
when reading this sentence i was wondering what would lead a person to make such a radical leap of leaving everything behind and starting over again?

Maybe the reading 14.1.3>64 has to do with a solution to why you wanted "this new beginning"?

Hi Breakmov,

Thanks for your reply! I like your interpretation and insights.
Here's what I'm thinking about now...

Q: "How do you take lines 1 and 3 into account in a new environment?"

A: The new environment I'm pondering going to would actually be a return to my old environment... I was born in the American Midwest and am considering returning there after living the last 5 years in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Q: "I was wondering what would lead a person to make such a radical leap of leaving everything behind and starting over again?"

A: Even thought I've been in New Mexico 5 years I've never really adjusted to the sun and heat... that's one reason I want to make a radical leap and move back to the Midwest. The other (and bigger reason) is the crime in Albuquerque. I want to get away from it. Even though nothing bad has happened to me personally I feel very stressed living here.

I'll keep pondering 14.1.3>64
Thank you so much for taking the time to offer your insight.
It really helps.

Food for thought:
when you asked the question of your reading, did you already have this idea of returning to the starting place in mind?
What made you leave the Midwest?

is there a connection between 14.1.3>64 and that starting point?

hex 14 has to do with possessing wealth (in a broad sense) or also seeking wealth( ...a richer life in a broad sense). In hex14 there is always a sense of sharing wealth, both giving and receiving and a group in this sharing.

There is something that 14.1.3>64 shows clearly, both directly as well as hidden indirectly in the structure, and it is connected to caution and thoughtfulness in what led you to question Yi.
All the best to you.

Hi,
When I asked the question of my reading I was asking generally. However yes, I have been thinking about moving since last year. I'll keep thinking about the rest of your questions. Thanks for your reply.

You'll definitely leave great possessions (14) behind as in any major change.
14.1 says it would be hard, but not a mistake, and 14.3 says not everyone is capable of doing so.
64 shows you're not still there, so maybe it's soon to know about the exact things you'll leave & miss.

64. Before Completing your move ...
14.1 Select the things that give you joy...
14.3 Give everything else to your local thrift store.
