Hiya.

The other day, I noticed that four of the lines in 27 were about what *not* to take in by way of nourishment. Today, I noticed that four of the lines in Hex 55 seem to be about what's *not* part of the overall picture of what I render as 'peaking' in 55. Hex 55 seems to me to be about a high point, like the sun at noon in the sky. Yet four of the lines in 55 are about 'shading' or 'screening' that very sun. Fair enough, just like 27 perhaps. But my question is this: have you ever seen those four lines rendered as 'eclipse'?

where? you mean the lines associated with mid-day?
IC+ 55

Line 1 -
"One meets one's equal. Spending time together, no harm. Move on with honour." [Feeding/Filling off each other, becoming full]

In XOR, lIne 1 position ruled by 24 and so the 24-ness of 55 is described by 62. Focus is on issues of loyalty ( sharing of space/time - what 55 keeps coming back to, bgins with)

Line 2 -
"[Apparent Abundance]. Midday: inspecting a grain bin, proceedings lead to doubts and anger. Truthfulness [is suddenly] shown[/blurted out]. Favourable." [Innocence and unexpected.]

In XOR, line 2 position is ruled by 07 so 07-ness of 55 is described by analogy to 34. (the focus on uniformity is expressed in a link to invigorated to blurt out - cannot hold it back, to be truthful, to be 'same' as others)

Line 3 -
"Spreading Abundance. Midday: seeing drool [at the mouth] one cuts off one's right hand. No harm in this.". [Amount arouses one's assistant's greed]

In XOR the line 3 position is ruled by 15 so 15-ness is described by 51 (link to shock) - keeping words close to facts, levelling out, evening out through the use of 'enlightenment' - aka shock, surprise. - possible sense of eclipse (coverup followed by sudden revelation)

line 4 -
"[Apparent Abundance]. Midday: inspecting a grain bin, one encounters one's ruler hiding. Favourable." [Benefit/progress gained]

In XOR the line 4 position is ruled by 16 so the 16-ness of 55 is described by analogy to 36 (link to a 'hidden light' to enthuse about, a potential etc) - possible sense of eclipse with the 36 and the enthusiasm for the light to come when it is over.

Line 5 -
"[Approaching perfection (reach the zenith)]. One receives rewards and praise. Favourable." [Implies one is approved of, i.e. a mirror for others to see what they wish].

In XOR line position 5 is ruled by hexagram 08 and so 8-ness of 55 is described by analogy to 37 (clan/family connections) - 08 covers attraction, admiration with its expression within 55 through the group (container with positive content if but rigid)

Line 6 -
"Full to the rafters, hiding one's home. Looking through the door, one is observed living alone, one has no social contact for three years. Unfortunate." [more concerned with 'things' one has lost one's direction.]

In XOR line position 6 is described by 23, so 23-ness of 55 is described by analogy to 30. 23 covers pruning, to cut back for some future time - it also covers the last bastion of order before collapse. Here this pruning is extreme (link to 'last bastion prior to collapse) and expressed as an ideology, the house filled with 'stuff', there is no direction (represented in ideology) or more so it is turned inwards. ... um... hides in the house as an expression of eclipse?

The 27-ness of 55, (XOR of lines 1 & 6) and so the infrastructure of 55, is described by 56 - the generic flavour of 56 covers issues of personal loyalty with a focus on exaggeration of such when at a distance from what one is loyal to. The issues as such are in the expression of such, the 'blurting out' aspect.

The 48-ness of 55, describing ther source of nourishment, is described by analogy to 58 - indicating intensity in expression (of self) an that links to diversity in expression, exhuberance of expression and so a general sense of pushing out. Thus pushing outwards is a trait of 55 in its link with fire as base.

Lets look at line 4: 101100-101000 (55 to 36). The 27-ness is 001101-001001 (56-52). This covers the vague meaning of discernment (quality control) emerging from, or working in a context of, loyalty. In 36 the covering of the light is an act of faith, of loyalty, to that light.

16-ness of 55 maps to 55->36 :From diversity/abundance comes uncompromising.
27-ness of that 16-ness - (infrastructure of what is represented in 55-36) is From loyalty comes discernment. You can sense the abundance/diversity present to which is applied control (regulation, law, plan, property of 16) in an uncompromising form. ... so there is at best a vague sense of eclipse.

Dobro, you need to read Steve Marshall's Mandate of Heaven. While you wait for Amazon to deliver it, try LiSe's 55-56 page.

(Shorter answer: yes, it's an eclipse.)

The contrary lines of 27 never bothered me, but I admit to stumbling over 55's lines sometimes. The way I equalize it is by saying, here's the sun at midday, and here's what keeps it from shining through.

Judgments (which is at least part of what 55's about) often have complicated circumstances, which much be worked out before a clear decision can be made, and that's always a bit unnerving. The good news is that none of 55's line are without hope or help. The sun may be temporarily obstructed, but there's no point in getting bummed out about it. Be not sad, but be like the sun at midday - regardless of how things appear to be.

Mommy told me something
a little kid should know.
It's all about the devil
and I've learned to hate him so.
She said he causes trouble
when you let him in the room.
He will never ever leave you
if your heart is filled with gloom.

So let the sun shine in
face it with a grin.
Smilers never lose
and frowners never win.
So le the sun shine in
face it with a grin
Open up your heart and let the sun shine in.

When you are unhappy,
the devil wears a grin
But oh, he starts to running
when the light comes pouring in
I know he'll be unhappy
'Cause I'll never wear a frown
Maybe if we keep on smiling
He'll get tired of hanging 'round.

If I forget to say my prayers
the devil wears a grin.
But he feels so awful awful
when he sees me on my knees
So if you're full of trouble
and you never seem to win,
Just open up your heart and let the sun shine in.

So let the sun shine in
face it with a grin.
Smilers never lose
and frowners never win.
So le the sun shine in
face it with a grin
Open up your heart and let the sun shine in.

The binary sequence shows us 55 paired with 30.

The top line differences show 55 to be unconditional, general, 30 conditional, particular.

Since 30 covers guidance doubled and so a focus on ideology, direction-setting, the uncoditional form of this particular is the general plethora of ideologies around - and so a sense of abundance/diversity as covered in 55 - with each ideology representing a 'light' so there is much 'brilliance' present!

With the diversity present so it includes the 'dark' as well as the 'light' - given a multitude of 'good' comes 'bad' and so the light element can be 'stolen' - be it for the period of an eclipse ;-)

The full sequence of fire-based hexagrams is:

36,22 63,37 55,30 49,13

The spectrum covers the hiding of the light (36) (no likemindedness around) to its sharing (13).

The analysis of octets replicates that of the whole sequence of hexagrams. Thus we have:

(a) opposites of 37,55 (change scale and (63,37) oppose (55,30))
(b) complements of 36,55 (variations on a theme) (change scale and the variation covers the pairs of (36,33) with (55,30) - note this maps 22 with 30)

Overall there is a play across the whole set of hexagrams in revealing the light. bringing it out from its hiding place (rotate 36 to give 35 and its focus on bringing something into the light) (49 covers revelation by removing the skin etc), 37 covers structuring the light (rigid structure elicits tension release).

I suggest you wander through the octet from 36 to 13 ;-)

BTW - in the context of the traditional sequence pairing, what 55/56 have in common, their sameness, is described by analogy to characteristics of 28 - excess, going beyond the norm.

If we focus on the pairings in the traditional sequence, 55/30, they share a common element described by analogy to the characteristics of 43 - seeding, spreading the word.

Dobro,

I so want to egg you on in your pursuit of this reading! Steven Marshall's Mandate of Heaven is a completely wonderful book. Reading 55 as an eclipse is central to seeing the Yi as a story about a millinneal change, a society's change of era. Wonderful, riveting, revealing material. Great stuff!

Furthermore, it is easy to use the Y to see our own lives as an epic writ small in the light of this! Besides, it gives you something to look at when the mathy stuff gets boring. ;)

best of luck in your pursuits,

I think every line of every hexagram is positive/negative. Like every advice always is. If you do this, you will have success. If you don't do this, you will not have success. One sounds positive, one negative. But are they? They give the same answer to a question, just show the two sides every answer has. It only depends on how it is phrased.

Usually advice is only given from one of the two sides, not both. So the 'negative' answer tells you how not to act, the positive how to act (or vv), for exactly the same result.

Hexagrams are also both positive and negative (or better: neither pos nor neg). They describe situations, and how one can best act in them. So 39 it is not worse than 11, and 55 is not better than 12. Very often the 'bad' hexagrams are the ones which give the most needed advice.

Lise, I understand and agree with what your saying. *If* the Yi is responding to the question in either a present or future timeframe, though. See, for me, the Yi comments * a lot* on recent past events. I don't know why it does that, but when I ask an open question, I very often get something that images what I've been through recently. The Yi likes to tell me where I've just been rather than where I should go next. So when it does that, it's not a matter of what I should do. It's imaging what I've done.

To me the Yi also tells very often how something "is", and I even get the impression that that is its favorite terrain. Showing things, making them clear to me, giving them a name, face, anything with which I can handle them.

My questions are hardly ever about "what to do", but mostly about "what is this, how does this work". Giving me the clues for finding out myself what to do or how to proceed.

I don't know if that is what is happening when it talks to you about what you have been through? When I read my previous sentence, I could very well call it 'imaging' too.

"How does this work?" or "How has this been working?" - maybe not very different. :)

As for the darker lines of 55 - sometimes you can see further in the dark. There's a wonderful passage in Mister God, this is Anna about this, but I can't track the book down right now. Does anyone have a copy and know the part I mean?

I don't know that passage, Hilary, but here is something I wrote...

Long live ROY G BIV
The world's most colorful fellow.
His hair is red,
His cheeks are orange,
His teeth are golden yellow.

He wears a tie of brightest green,
His shirt is shinny blue,
He loves to dance
In indigo pants,
With his toes a violet hue.

What gives ROY G BIV
His unending sence of fun?
"I never stay
"Where clouds are grey,
"I only play in the sun."

Let's all live
Like ROY G BIV.
Tell sad feelings, "Go!"
Don't stare at a storm,
Flat and forlorn,
Bounce up!
Be a rainbow!

Okay, to those of you who've been reading this, let me ask you a question (and I'll ask myself the same question) that I've never asked before: if you were a parent or a teacher of either a child or a student, why would you be concerned to highlight the way things are for them, so that they see it clearly, rather than tell the person you're responsible for guiding what they 'should' do in order to get good results? I think I've got an answer, but I'd like to hear what you think.

When I recognize I've been shoulding all over someone, it's usually because I feel there is some higher authority whom I can not control who will appear and make things worse for both of us. Thus, "Be quiet children, you might wake your father" or "Practice your times tables, you'll never get into college if you con't know your times tables," with the hidden fear that if father wakes up or the student fails, it is I who will be punished for their behavior.

Mmm cos your idea of a 'good result' isn't nearly so crucial or important in your question as you think it is ? Idea of 'good result' means teacher/parent has an agenda or totally believes in the agenda of child/student even if it is quite ridiculous ?

Something I witnessed today comes to mind re agendas. A little boy about 3 years old looked like he'd been having fun at an amusement arcade at the seaside but the parents wanted to leave. However the boy desperately wanted to remain behind to ride the penny in the slot horse and wagon, wild west style, lol He was called several times but mounted the plastic horse with a determination I have to say I admired. His father then marched over and just physically removed him and walked away with him under his arm. I don't know if i can legitimately use that story to illustrate anything at all but it just tickled me at the time cos here i saw 2 completely seperate agendas, the ambition to ride the horse completely uppermost in the childs mind, to the parent its just an amusement the boy could do without.

Hmm anyway I have noticed there seems to be periods for me where the Yi does simply point out what is there, and I agree it can be quite baffling, why tell you what you know ? Still I guess extra clarification of the situation is useful and also it may be confirming your view of the situation to date has been accurate so you can be confident in your judgement of how to proceed - possibly.

I think another reason this stating how things are may be the question isn't actualy very important in the scheme of your life. Imagine asking your teacher "shall i study german or french ? " and the teacher shrugs, smiles and says, "well its up to you, you can study french or german". They would answer that way wouldn't they because there is no best way to go, its a matter of your preference - perhaps its like this with the Yi. We imagine all our decisions are pretty weighty when sometimes whichever way we decide it won't affect our path greatly.

Another weird way i find the Yi answering me lately is that if I ask about a decision, ie shall I do A or not do A it gives a plain simple prediction of what I am going to do.
Always turns out I do it that way. Its as if I only thought I had a choice in the matter and Yi knew all along what i was going to do. Sometimes its really made me quite grumpy  though ultimately the consequences are fine. Has made me wonder if I have a little less freewill than I think.

Anyway whats your conclusion Dobro ?

This is a great question. My take on giving advice comes from teh starting premis taht everybody has free will to choose whatever they wish to do and however they wish to behave. So advice needs to be given in such a way to allow the free will to express itself. Most advice that we all try to give is based on teh added experience of the years (the school of hard knocks). Speaking as a parent of 3 teenage boys the "should" and "must" approach has failed in spades. My approach now is to explore teh consequences with them of a number of possible actions - Some positive actions and some negative and see how they think these will impact them and the people around them in the future. This approach does not restrict their free will. They are just a bit more informed on "what may happen if.."

It's a good connect with liSe comment
I think every line of every hexagram is positive/negative. Like every advice always is. If you do this, you will have success. If you don't do this, you will not have success.
. Is the Yi just giving us all a lot of images on the "what if's" and we can take what we want from it, when we want it.

Do I always remember to adopt this approach? ----- No
Do my kids always take the decision I'd like them to? ----- No
Do we all learn from the decisions tha have been made -----Yes......eventually !!

Happy Chinging

I have come to see one main difference in our constitutional position and that of the sage.
We are mastered by time, the sage is the master of time or outside of time, where past present and future don't exist. The sage knows what you will do, probably!

You are splitting the singular and the particular/general where the particular is a focus on social dynamics and so sameness more than the singular that is focused on presenting difference.

As conscious individuals we 'report' of variations on a theme and so the potentially infinite number of interpretations of the IC as a whole or some hexagram in particular. The benefits of the singular are in being able to present some unique aspect/perspective of 'sameness'. IOW we all agree from the particular/general position on the generic traits of yin/yang but each can offer a unique point of view that brings out properties not considered at the level of sameness, only considered when presented as difference.

A focus on GUIDANCE is a focus on direction setting and so conforming to some ideology and being accepted as 'one of us' - aka likemindedness (fire).

A focus on CONTAINMENT is a focus on control and protection and is also about being 'one of us' but more so with an emphasis on rejection rather than acceptance. (water).

Likemindedness allows for 'local' differences in thought and so allows for the singular (difference) to operate within the bounds of the particular/general (sameness) - to a limit (boundary).

Note that FIRE covers external distributions whereas WATER covers internal distributions (consumption).

This also covers FILTRATION issues (five phase EARTH) in that the earth trigram form of filtration covers getting the rules from outside - in the form of some book or set of rules about what we can/cannot do. This is unconditional and so if X says dont then dont. The other trigram associated with filtration is that of mountain - here we cover personal experiences allowing for customisation of unconditional filters - we make them conditional through our focus on quality control. This is more energy-demanding that earth perspectives but also gives us more choices in behaviour and so conforms to the Law of requisite Variety that 'says' "the system with the most choices succeeds best in the long run".

Thanks, Chris. It also occurs to me that a focus on guidance may be more than a focus on guidance if you go a level above the ordinary. At a higher level, it may incorporate trust in the child or student to the extent that it may be a focus on creating a learning opportunity. The child or student may or may not avail themself of the opportunity. In fact, they may not even see it. But if the teacher thinks the student is ready, then he may offer her an opportunity to figure it out for herself rather than imposing a 'should' on her. Because at some point, the student is going to have to find 'the teacher within' instead of relying on external guidance, right?

I'm thinking this is what might be happening in my case. No more spoon feeding.
