Nine in the fourth place means:
The legs of the TING are broken.
The prince's meal is spilled
And his person is soiled.
Misfortune.
A man has a difficult and responsible task {posting the hexagrams}
to which he is not adequate.{}
Moreover, he does not devote himself to it with all his strength but goes about with inferior people {}; therefore the execution of the work fails.
In this way he also incurs personal opprobrium.
Confucius says about this line: "Weak character coupled with honored place, meager knowledge with large plans, limited powers with heavy responsibility, will seldom escape disaster." {}
This line stands in the relationship of correspondence to the six in the beginning, the line suggesting the upturned legs of a TING. The latter situation is not of grave import, for the TING is still empty; here however, the matter is serious, since the TING contains food. It is therefore not simply an overturning: the legs of the TING are broken, and the prince's meal is spilled. In conformity with the place, there should be a relationship with the ruler of the hexagram, the six in the fifth place, either that of holding together or that of receiving. But the relationship with the six at the beginning interferes. This points to a disastrous split between character and position, between knowledge and aspirations, between strength and responsibility {}.
Quote=frank_r As the 4th line is the line of the heart, the 3th is the line of the kidney the Will.To know what to do with your Will power.
The 3th line is the most ambitious line and is connected with hexagram 15. The hexagram of being modest.
Clear Hearing(as Janice wrote) is connected with the kidney and with this third line. Where the seeing, visualising part is done by the 4th line because the eye is more connected with the heart.
Exactly one year ago we were at the last line of 17.6. Almost in 18. With the 4th line changing we are in 18. And is X-mas and new year not a time we are aware of our history with our parents and family?
This is the time that it is visible how our relations are with this basic part of our history.
With going to 17 and 18 we went back to our own history. With 49 and 50 we came out of this history and we are going to the future. Now we can see how the travelling through history was, and can set new goals.
With the change of the 5th line the upper nucleus and the upper trigram are both heaven.
The trigram of refinement, now we are refining more and more what already started some time ago.
Here we come in 44 the hexagram of our instincts. This line stands under control of hexagram 8 the searching of soul affinity.
This changing yin line is as a mild and wise King. The character from this line is as Han Boering writes: "The whole is larger than the sum of the parts" The interaction between all the parts is what counts.
The finding of people with common grounds is best done with our instincts and doing this will bring new erea's to the light.
Frank
Thank you Frank, as always you're guidance is helping me to understand the hexagrams and their connections. You mentioned above that 49 and 50 is about coming out of our own history and moving to the future. Does this mean that as we understand the different jigsaw pieces that put us together, we begin to understand the intentions of our soul and purpose in this lifetime? We understand why we chose the parents we did and the earlier circumstances we encountered that would help us search and develop along certain lines? As we gather with family whom we may not have seen since last year, do we with detachment, begin looking at our parents and seeing the paths they've been on and that We are a product of these two experiences which now gives us a different perspective, helping us to begin developing our own choices and actions. Is this a Major Shift in our thinking?.....
Is this what you mean (with the change of the 5th line) 'refining more and more what we started some time ago? You mention instincts but is this also where we feel or intuit a deeper purpose to why we do what we do at certain times? Are we focusing on being conscious, more interested in developing ourselves as well as serving others?

There is within the ears an area called the Labyrinth, http://www.theodora.com/anatomy/the_internal_ear_or_labyrinth.html This labyrinth consists of three semicircular canals, each at an acute angle to each other. Fluid actually moves between these canals and signal to the brain the balance and position of the head and body. All this keeps us upright, centered, and clear in the direction we want to go in. It is a balance between heaven and earth as well as a balance between our self and others. It is a balance between opposites, a balance of both inner and outer.
Hello Janice,
For me with this 5th line there is a refinement in the sense of how you can watch things devellop. Especially with this time around x-mas, there you see how things in the family are, or other matters that are in the more deeper part of yourself. This are the seeds that will come to life in the coming year.
Some days ago the Mother of my brother in law died, and I went to the funeral. But after the funeral I only saw my sister very short. Because my planning was to tight and I had to go home early I had a bad feeling after this funeral.
This feeling made some parts visible. Now I saw that I was not satisfied with myself and before I didn't want to see this part. When I was young I then had arguments with my sister and blamed her for this feeling.
The refinement for me is that I start to see how I always worked around this feelings.
Interesting site you were quoting, but how did you come to the step to make a connection with refinement, family and the labyrint of the inner ear? What is the inner ear for you?
Frank
Just to help in answering Mengs question before answering Franks, Gold is a powerful warm masculine color, often in keeping with the Sun which dispels darkness, it also uplifts and expands the Self upward and out. It's healing energy of love allows us to expand from a consciousness of pain, hurt, guilt, blame, etc. helping us to integrate into a new form of unity. Gold has been known to dominate a person's personality.
Frank.....
I’m so sorry Frank. I can truly feel your pain of losing ‘family’ and so close to a time when togetherness and happiness are to be enjoyed. My condolences to you, your sister, brother-in-law and family.
I looked up the meaning of refinement, one jumped out at me, ‘removing impurities’….these impurities could also take on the name of the shadow, named by Carl Jung. The shaodw can damage our spirit and keeps us from fulfilling our dreams. It is our dark side, deep within our consciousness hidden from ourselves and others. Congratulations Frank, you embraced what was hidden inside you and ‘saw’ what you’ve kept holding onto all these years. You must have experienced a flow of energy with this new realization.
I liked what rosada said ‘so many disconnected thoughts swirling….it fits nicely with my own whirling thoughts…..

The middle ear is what churns out rhythms, patterns and pulses to the inner ear which hides within the hard bones of the skull. These vibrations travel into a liquid filled spiral tube that looks like a shell….its name is cochlea which is actually the latin word for snail. The cochlea transforms the vibratory elements of Air and Earth into the element of Water. If we were able to look at this part of the ear it would look like a swirling vortex, similar to a bubbling brook or rushing stream.
Each of our senses, hearing, sight, touch, etc. have a higher spiritual connection which gives us insight and guidance to the people and the world around us. With the ears, sound patterns make a long chemical and electrical journey through different nerve endings to the ‘hearing’ brain area. Here the Fire element comes alive as electrical charges leap across the caverns between nerve cells. The ears I’ve discovered do seem to have the ability to perform an alchemical mixture of gathering, transforming and reforming vibrations.
These vibrations, I do believe do not just come from the outer world. They come from our inner world too….our cells are constantly talking to one other. They can create intensely mixed feelings, clarity and/or confusion….depending on which nerves (emotions) have been stimulated. When we are ‘seeing clearly’, these vibrations within us hum like an orchestra, a sonic vibration that awakens and ignites the right and left brain function. If everything is in a synchronistic flow, we see, know, understand and coupled with wisdom (whispered guidance) are able to refine our thinking.
Whatever we see or hear, whatever emotions we are experiencing with others, the thoughts that were originally put in our minds, came from our own perception of them. The journey of life is seldom a straight road but a labyrinth of many twists and turns…..a direct symbolism of the narrow tunnels leading to the inner ear.
That’s the best I can describe this Frank. What are your thoughts???

What a cool visual. As an improv guitar hack, it's very difficult to say in words where the sounds originate from, because you hear it from the inside before hearing it on the outside, and somewhere in the middle of that you are actually playing it. Like the man walking in front of the icebreaker ship, some part of the psyche or spirit is going out ahead of the forward striding body.
Yes, everything inside is communicating and interacting. The bubbly stew called consciousness.
definitely spoke to me and resonates with the connection of sound and body. Spot on!Like the man walking in front of the icebreaker ship, some part of the psyche or spirit is going out ahead of the forward striding body
I confess that I am not a great fan of psychology but throughout this thread I am constantly reminded of Vygotsky (who for me is far more interesting than any other psychological theorists). Vygotsky suggested that 'mind extends beyond the skin' which nicely rocks the boat of the cartesian individual/social dichotomy and places us/our minds in a web of culture, environment and each other that is mutually and multiply influential.
Ravenstar and Frank , thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Really interesting things you have said here. Some dots have been connected in my mind.
Meng asked : What role, if any, has precognition within a hex. 50 context?
I see precognition, foreknowledge, intuition like dot spread here and there. They have an inhered value but maybe if we can’t connect those dots and “draw” the resulting image then those values stays frozen.
Can we see precognitions as the ingredients of the stew, the dots? If yes, then what is that that draws the lines and connect them? From where the recipe comes from? Or they are the recipe ?
I think that whether we realize it or not, we picture activities in our mind before doing them.
The Yi described itself to Jung as hex 50. 50 says that consolidating fate/destiny is a matter of correcting fate before it happens. Precognition may not reveal a completed picture, but it presents a still fluid means of shaping life.
Thanks to rodaki, I'll tried the button with the paperclip but nothing happened what am I doing wrong?

I think it would be appropriate for the names of a few Great Souls to be mentioned at this line:
Buddha.
Jesus.
If anyone cares to add a name or two, even your own, please feel free. If you're wondering why in the world I''m doing this, please just tolerate me. I'm not too clear. It's something along the lines of our group consciousness connecting with/creating
a Higher Consciousness like a chorus of carolers creates The Spirit of Christmas.
I think of how electricity travels through water and I think of The Caldron as capable of that same sort of instant distribution of knowingness amongst all who contribute to The Soup. So yeah, meng, 50 has a lot to say about precongnition and telepathy and channeling too.
When I saw this question from Meng I got hung up on a picture of us all being a vacuum cleaner. At the start of your life it's set to suck so you hoover up the dirt and dust on autopilot. It clogs everything up and you have no way of seeing beyond the layers of dust and the dust storm.Meng asked : What role, if any, has precognition within a hex. 50 context?
