Hey everyone,

I'm just about to finish my first month in a Music MA which so far has been a breath of fresh air and just what i needed. Its hard work, but extremely satisfying finally learning about what I have enjoyed as a hobby for many years in an academic forum.

The last time I asked about university, it was months ago when i was deciding which university to go to. it was a toss up between two, with this school i'm now in getting the casting of 16.1. Now it seems like Yi might have been talking about 16 in the music sense of the hexagram, but at the time, the advice here was quite negative, as in 16.1 isnt a very good line to draw, and a few members even suggested maybe putting off uni for awhile. I wasnt prepared to do that as I was going stir-crazy with the lifestyle i was in, so in a way I disregarded advice because I was desperate for a change. I think in a way, i went with 16 and its association with music, line 1 being at the beginning of the process, and so I made it into a story of 'at the beginning of enthusiasm for music', if you get where i'm coming from.

Tonight i've asked my second question regarding the course. I asked ' image of me and the Music MA'. Maybe an oddly formed question, but i was basically asking for a snapshot of how i'm currently doing. 1 1,5> 50.

These two lines together seem a little confusing. line 1 emphasises non action, while line 5 gives the impression of being at the top of the game, in full swing, and as a result needing guidance. 50, the ding...what you put into it is what you get out??

I was hoping someone might be able to help me form this combination into a more coherent 'story'.

Thanks for any of your wonderful thoughts!

As always,

IMO, Hex 1 lines 1,5 changing to 50 seems to be saying when the time is ripe, your creative potential will be nourishing to others. Right now it may be time to wait, but in the course of time, you will have the opportunity you want.

Hex 16 line 1 may be saying that your choice of university or program may be more about being in the "right group" to find connections than a genuine regard for the program on offer.

Sayler,

Thank you for your thoughts. I see now that maybe its a progression from line 1 (the situation as it is now) Which then might move towards line 5 over the next few months.

thats a very interesting take on 16.1 also, that interpretation hadnt occurred to me.

Thanks!

Hexagram fifty speaks of establishing the new. And one cannot do that until the time is right. In the early stages, line one, it is unwise to act. It is only when we have created new situations that the promise of line 5 can be fulfilled.

As far as interpreting 16.1, I find your question unclear. What was it you were specifically asking. Line one has to do with uniting with others, and that is the only time enthusiasm is recommended. The question becomes, what were the motives for picking that particular school, and were they really valid? Beyond that, I do not know what you are really asking.

Thanks gene for that 1-50 interpretation. Its early days, only a month in, and i suppose the 'shaping of the vessel' has only just begun.

the 16.1 was the answer i got about attending this school. I asked 2 questions at the time ( i think it might have been in july of this year) one was 'what if i go to school A;, and then this answer for the school i'm currently in. (school b).

Unfortunately, I cant remember what the casting was for school A, and I posted these results in reading circle, and my subscription has finished ( I plan to re-subscribe when i have the money to do so) so I cant check.

From what I remember at the time, a lot of the advices about the 16.1 was that maybe i should wait for a better opportunity. Alot of what i've read about this line seems to emphasise an 'over enthusiasm', some kind of premature imagining that needs to be checked. Maybe this line was mirroring my 'shi' at the moment of casting. Possibly my ideas about the school werent founded on reality?? I dont rightly know, I'm just throwing this out there three months after the casting.

What i latched onto was 16 and its connotations with music. moving to 51, enlightenment, some kind of unexpected knowledge that shakes things up.

Thanks Gene, Much appreciated :bows:

Something I noticed about this is that Hex 50 is about beginnings, taking potential energy and turning it into kinetic energy (or at least that's how I've seen it), and Hex 1 is about a consistent energy which never falters. This reminds me of a gun firing a bullet, or an arrow shot from a bow. The key is to maintain the energy which has already been put into play. Or it could have other meanings.

Yxeli,

I'd feel happy if I had asked your question and received 1.1.5 > 50. It seems like quite an auspicious answer --- like you are Creatively Cooking in the Vessel --- undergoing a Creative Transformation. And 1.1 seems like an appropriate line to receive when one is a student. Isn't a student a "Hidden Dragon" --- someone who is learning in the ivory tower (or --- the "underwaters" of the school) rather than "acting" in the outer world? Perhaps your teachers are the "great people" that it is "fruitful to see" (line 1.5) at this time.

I am wondering if when you received 16.1 in the previous reading if the I Ching was simply telling you that you didn't need to get confirmation at that time from others about your understanding of your "enthusiasm." In this case perhaps Karcher's commentary on the line applies. Of 16.1 he says "You are trying to get others to take care of you, but you must provide for yourself now.", i.e., "Enough trying to get confirmation from other diviners! Make your own decision!" And this is not to discount the value of feedback from other diviners --- but rather in this particular instance perhaps it wasn't necessary. The way that you describe your current satisfaction leads me to believe that you have made a good choice. Are you second guessing it anyway?

As far as the other school you had asked about , perhaps it was this question:
"What if I did the MFA in the faraway city?" You received 27.1.2 > 4 . Does that look familiar?

Is the idea of Creatively Transforming yourself underwater while Flying there with your teachers a coherent image of you and your Music MA? (kind of a flying fish dragon swimming in a school of other flying fish dragons)

Or you could see it sequentially ---You are "underwater" studying, preparing for the time to emerge "flying in heaven."

:D

BY JOVE! thats the ticket! :)

Interesting what you've said about kind of disavowing external advices. There's so much to take into account with every moving line. The more I get under Yi's skin, the more I am flabbergasted at the extent of these 'intersections', these changes. I now see the importance of any diviners who actually charge for interpretations to know the full extent of the question at hand. Skeptics might say that thats somehow 'cheating', but really, the yi is such a personal and profound tool that unless you can explain your current state to the best of linguistic devices in this forum, your going to get 'stock' answers.

I read recently in Alfred Huang, that when you get to a level of really understanding the complexities of this book, the individual changing line interpretations become almost unworthy of your attention. I love this idea. You become so familiarised with the line positions, the nuclear hex's, the fan yao, the lines themselves, that somehow, the whole story takes on a living form where the membrane between the 'externalised thought' put forth in any translation and your inherent perception and lexicon of experiences associated with the given line or combination dissolves.

As far as the other school you had asked about , perhaps it was this question:
"What if I did the MFA in the faraway city?" You received 27.1.2 > 4 . Does that look familiar?

yes!

and now that i look at it, its like Yi knew that i was asking these questions with a fragment of the intention that i was going to post these to clarity. And I'm sure at the 'shi', that it was such a big decision that I certainly was thinking of getting other peoples ideas on these combinations. Its like Yi was saying 'Your real intention here is to get 'nourishment' (advice) from others because the background (4) of this question stems from 'not knowing',

That and a whole plethora of other subtler connotations.

This **** doesnt stop amazing me :)

Thanks calling crane!

As always,

Er I have looked on the thread about choice of places for diploma/MA and as far as i can see you got 13.1 not 16.1. I can't find reference to 16.1 anywhere but I'll check again. On the main thread your choices were between 13.1 and 27.1.2

you got 13.1 for the diploma nearby and 27.1.2 for MA in faraway city. Hilary mentions 16.4 but I can't see why , there's no 16.4 cast there, but she might be referring to another thread.

So the reading you cast for the MA in the faraway city was 27.1.2>23 ....and thats where you are now (?) so the 13.1 which you remembered as the 16.1 doesn't apply at all to the current situation does it ?

Well I'm confused. I think i will give up :D

Well yes you didn't get 16.1, you got 27.1.2>23 but I don't think anyone there gave you negative advice  the points you just bought up here were actually bought up on the thread at the time.....as in 'only you can know the situation' and 'yes you do have to do what you have to do' etc etc.

still I guess there's no point discussing a thread you can't see

well I'm assuming you are in the MA in faraway city...that was 27.1.2>23. Yes it could be the case the answer referred to you seeking feedback....who knows, only you

Trojan,

Thanks for taking the time to look at the threads. In my quick looking for the thread she mentioned I found the 27.1.2 > 4 but not 16.1 and your clarifying that it was 13.1 is helpful.

Yx,

So I am also wondering, are you at the "faraway" place? If so the reading is perhaps understandable in retrospect. Hexagram 4 is a good hexagram for a student isn't it? So "What if I go to the faraway place? has become a Student being Nourished ? This is interesting to me as I am not sure I would have turned the 27.1.2 > 4 into a "yes". But it sounds like having said "yes" --- if indeed you are at the "faraway" place you asked about is working for you.

Originally Ylexi posted the answer as 27.1.2>23. Hilary did indeed spot 27.1.2 changed to hex 4 which was more encouraging than 27>23. So yes answer to faraway place was 27>4 not 27>23

Other casts in that thread re the issue were 45 unchanging for college far away and 16.4 for college close by....although I think those casts werein another thread...but I'm confused enough so I'll leave it there

oh ffs.

where did i get 16.1 from? :duh:

Right,

well, im not in 'the faraway place'. (faraway place, jaysus, note to self: use adult words when consulting YI)

so 13.1 not 16.1 was the answer for where i am now. hm. that puts a slightly different spin on things anyway. The beginning of meeting likeminded types? Kind of fits in with what you mentioned callingcrane about being in a position now of networking, or mentorship, as in 1.5.

thanks both for taking the time out to actually search for this thread in reading circle and have check for me. Mucho obligado! :)

I am glad this was the 13.1 choice :bounce: there's lots of places to go from 13.1.

ETA I only put one green bouncing man in....as far as I know and now the post is swarming with them...

...well it must be some kind of omen perhaps
