I've unexpectedly found myself in a situation which, until yesterday cut and clear, turned into a reason for sleepless nights.

I've started an application process for postgraduate studies in a country overseas. I've already conntacted a professor, prepared the portfolio of works, written application and chosen referees. I was waiting for the references to send the whole thing when I got an information from a friend that a job opportunity had arisen in the same country.

Now I don't know what to do: the postgrad course is supposed to start in September and this job is supposed to start in less than a month. If I get the job (and the chances are that I might since I meet all the necessary requirements) I cannot take the studies.

But, even that is not the problem. The main thing is that I do not feel prepared to leave now, neither mentally nor physically, but I keep thinking - what if I miss something real and big (the job) for something that's not even sure yet (the postgraduate course).

I've asked the IC what to do and got 10>30.

I would appreciate any help possible.

Thank you very much.

You asked 'what to do'. In a situation with 2 clear options it might help if you ask about each option in turn like 'what if i do a' etc. I say this because your answer 10 to 30 seems to describe someone needing to be extremely cautious as there are things in the situation you may not be fully aware of or equipped to deal with (10.3). Having said that the other lines 10.2 and 10.5 would suggest going your own peculiar way, IOW not following convention doing your own thing quietly, with caution, can be okay for you.

Looking at the sentence 10 and 30 make would be 'treading with clarity' being careful and clear about your options...which is what you're trying to be I guess so thats why to get more of an idea which option is preferable I would ask about each option in turn.

Thank you for your advice.

I did as you recommended and got the following answers:

What can I expect if I opted for the job? hex 12>9
What can I expect if I give up the job and chose the postgraduate course? 43>24

Many changing lines in both...

Well I can't tell you what to do from these answers...neither look particularly great options to me. What did you think ?

Well, i must admit that the answer 43>24 seems more promising to me, considering the circumstances. If I’m reading it properly, that is.

43 talks about inferior people which are beginning to disappear. Those could ne my present employers and the whole set of circumstances that I’ve had to put up with for a long time.
“As a result of resolute action, a change in conditions occurs, a break-through” – The resolute action could be to apply for the course and to change the conditions.

However, since there are four changing lines, I’ve paid closer attention to the second hexagram, especially its first line, since it is not moving:

24 talks about the end of the time of darkness and of the return of the light. I’ve always seen 24 as coming out of a tunnel or, more precisely, as seeing the light at the end of a tunnel. Please, correct me if my interpretation is faulty…

Anyway, 24 goes on:

“the movement is natural, arising spontaneously. For this reason the transformation of the old becomes easy. The old is discarded and the new is introduced. Both measures accord with the time.” – that could, again, mean my separation with the job I do not like and creating a new kind of life (which, after the year of the postgrad course, could make it possible to come back to my hometown and create a new quality life).

“Societies of people sharing the same views are formed. But since these
groups come together in full public knowledge and are in harmony with the
time” – those could be the people that would be offered the place at the university, coming from everywhere, forming a new “society”, a group.

But, it is 24.1 that sounds worrying: “every faintly evil thought must be put aside immediately, before it goes too far and takes root in the mind. Then there is no cause for remorse, and all goes well.” – unless I observe it as advice not to give up the study for the job.

How does this sound to you?

As for the 12>9, I think it means that it would be too early to make some sweeping changes now (which is what I’ve mentioned in the first post: I do not think I am ready to go so abruptly. My dilemma was whether I would lose an excellent opportunity by refusing the job.)

Please, tell me what you think of the interpretation and, above all, why did 43>24 seem bad to you.

Thank you very much.

I think your interpretations are better than mine would have been and I totally agree with them. Liked the way you interpreted 12>9, I was struggling to find words for it cos for me the feeling of it was a real lack of 'ooomph', you know, no real energy there. Like I'm always saying when theres lots of lines I focus more on the sentence the 2 hexes make so its 'small taming standstill' or 'standstill/minor restraining'..its not a picture of full flowing energy is it, possibly a bit of a dead end.

I'd agree 43 to 24 does look better, especially as you say with all those lines changing 24 is important. So the sentence with these two might be 'resolute return'. You asked why I thought 43>24 was bad...well I don't really its just in my own experience 43 can indicate a measure of harshness in things, breaking away quite forcefully from things, which can be less than pleasant.... but in your circumstances this is what brings you to return, perhaps this resoluteness is whats needed for you. If its parting from previous relations/lifestyles its not a gentle drifting away its very much more of a statement about who you are and what you want. 43 does advise one 'not to resort to arms' in asserting your decision and I think thats quite a skill to master. I was thinking perhaps to take this option you have to be quite forceful and break with preexisting conditions in a very open/direct way, possibly you may be challenged. Not sure why you are looking at 24.1 in particular as I don't see it prominent in your reading . Anyway thats why I was hesitant about hte 43>24 because i was wondering how difficult the 'breaking away ' aspect would be for you in going away to do the post grad studies. You see what came to my mind was if breaking away were too difficult you may decide to stay..in other words not do the studying or the job if there were things making you want to stay where you are...Anyway I do think doing the post grad course will require some determination from you ..only you know if you definately want to make the break so to speak

I don't know how to do multi quoting, but:

As for the first, I don't think my interpretations could be better, but thank you for the encouragement.

As for 24.1 I was paying attention because there are four changing lines and I thought that in that case I should pay attention to the first of the non moving lines in the second hexagram. But that's wrong then..?

How difficult it would be... well, that's a good point. Very difficult but necessary. And I think that going now - either for the job or for the studies - would be extremely difficult for, as I have already said, I am completely not ready for an abrupt change.
I expect that it would be difficult even to leave in nine months, when the course starts, and I am sure I will need a lot of determination...

But, that's a question for another reading.
Thank you for helping me with this one. :)
