I asked the Ching why my ex broke things off with me recently. I got 12:3. I'm not sure how to interpret it.

Separation and Difficulty

"Heaven and Earth separate from one another. There is a lack of understanding between men."

Hex 12 is the natural opposite of Hex 11, where there is peace. Hex 12 is where things are obstructed and at a standstill.

Hexagram 3 is about the difficulties at the beginning of a process; shoots of plants trying to push through the earth and meeting stones, tree roots, dryness. Focus on your situation and look for help. You are at the beginning of a new process.

There are three moving Lines: 1, 4 and 6. They suggest that while eventually you will overthrow the obstructions and end the standstill (Line 6), right now you should withdraw from the former relationship if you can't influence it or keep your integrity (Line 1). Line 4 points to the beginning of the process of overcoming the obstruction, and again mentions friends, but this time as people who will benefit from your new start. (Line 4)

Sorry for your difficulty; as for the "why", it sounds like things were upside down, with obstruction and stagnation. The rest seems to be about what you have to do.

I'm a little confused by your notation. I took it as hexagram 12 with the third line changing, but tigerintheboat read it as hexagram 12 changing to hexagram 3.

In either case, 12 doesn't seem to suggest a mistake or misstep so much as a relationship that just wasn't meant to be. Maybe there just wasn't enough of a connection to sustain the relationship, or maybe you and your friend were simply on diverging paths which made an eventual parting of the ways inevitable.

The Yi is not suggesting here that you did something wrong. It is reflecting the innate weakness in humans to sometimes (often times) not fulfill our intentions and follow through with our promises. In Hex 12 humans let humans down.

This is not your fault, although I know it's tempting to want to blame the situation on something you did...
12.3 S/he may have felt impatient or unsettled in the relationship, but this is because they have not developed the strength of patience and love within themselves. Maybe on a subconscious level you both felt unworthy.
Whatever the reason, i think it is a good change. Yi is saying that your ex doesn't have the "right stuff" right now to be a good partner to you.

Sorry about the mistake

Yes, I meant 12 line 3 moving to 33.

H33 is Retreat, and live to fight (and love) another day.

H12 is Stagnation, that's the answer, it is not what you did wrong, necessarily, but what is and was: Stagnation, Blockage, Misfortune, Disharmony and Hindrance (Balkin, The Laws of Change).

Balkin says "Don't give in and lower your standards. Your self-worth is the most precious commodity you have. If you sacrifice it to please others now, you will have to keep sacrificing it to please others repeatedly...."

Line 3 describes someone who presses forward in a time of stagnation with unfortunate results. Maintain the ethical high ground, and don't attempt to revive this relationship with an underhanded practices or those which would lower your standards or self-worth Only shame can follow.

Remember, retreat (H33) is a strategic move, made for your benefit, to preserve yourself and your resources. Stay well!
