Well, the secondary hexagram is quite clear ~ that it's a great idea.

But it's 12.5 that isn't really clear to me, in this context... :/

You are looking to him to hedge your bets, to be a protective hedge or Mulberry bush. I think this leads to a positive outcome. Certainly doesn't look as if it could hurt.

12.5 - This line says the blockage will give way, and that will be fortunate. But you must have the serious awareness that you could die.

I don't think the reading says you need a mediator like Papa Legba. In my experience you don't, I have had many spiritual experiences without a mediator. I think it says getting past the blockage requires you to have a seriousness to death, to connect with and experience what is past death.
There are a number of similar traditions, like Hawaiian Huna where you do not have a gatekeeper between you and spiritual agencies that can help you. In Catholicism also, you can directly approach the Saints and Angelic powers like Archangels for help, and Jesus.
My direct experiences with the spirit world required spiritual practices, not a mediator.

But the reading does not say no, per se. It does say what you need is real seriousness and the blockage will give way.

Quite true. But I'm a little familiar with the spirit's nature, but it's sort of like... theory vs practice.

I guess I'm just apprehensive, as this is the first time I've done this, and don't know what to expect... so that holds me back from being able to easily just give it try... I find myself often paralyzed by uncertainties, and then getting nothing done at all...

Although we usually go to the I Ching when we're consulting it as an oracle, you can also read it for advice in general. For example 1.The Creative tells you what to do when you're feeling uncertain. To strengthen perseverance persevere when you feel you're "1.4 Wavering over the depths," back up and check out 1.3 "All day the superior man is active, at night his mind is still beset with cares." IOW, when you're hesitant about moving forward study the situation and get more information, fill in more details, a clearer path will emerge.

I asked whether my local crossroads would be good enough, asking what the outcome would be.

The I Ching replied with 10.1 > 6.

I got the feeling that the I Ching was telling me that there's no need to over=complicate things, in terms of ritual and whatnot. That I should just... do it. Show some dedication through plain desires with pretense, so to speak. That is, elaborate ritual is unnecessary...?

Okay... just asked the I Ching for more clarification about whether fancy ritual is even necessary... and it throws 55 unchanging at me.

It's like the I Ching is telling me that "yes, it's fine ~ stop worrying!" Almost like it's telling me that I'm being silly and worrying myself over nothing. Heh...
