13.5 to 30 - chances for a new relationship

Will I meet someone new by the end of the year? Yi's answer: hexagram 13.5 turning to 30.

The answer seems straight forward, but I don't know how this could refer to a new relationship. Why all the weeping and struggles? I see the fan yao of this line is all about grief too, but the line is auspicious: hex 30.5 - Tears in floods, sighing and lamenting. Good fortune.

Could Yi be pointing to my infinite search for the right man? I've put an end to a short unsatisfying relationship at the end of June. We don't even talk to each other anymore. I still find myself thinking about this guy, but I know I shouldn't and I wouldn't want to continue this story.

Other time when I asked the same question, the result was hexagram 50.2.3.4.6 changing to hexagram 2. I know hex 2 is bad for relationships, but 50 with all those changing lines seems to indicate a progress or that something is cooking.

Do I read this wrong? Could anyone with more experience help me with some insight into these readings?

I noted this was a few days ago, and nobody responded. Sometimes people don't know what to say, or if too much is asked... But I will try to address this as best I can.

First, I would be careful about asking strict yes or no questions. It might be better to ask, How can I meet someone, or what do I have to do, or how can I make myself more available,... Or, well, you get the idea.

Second, while it doesn't hurt to read the changing line of the resulting hexagram as well, the answer is more directly expressed in the changing line of the first hexagram. It was hexagram 13 line five and not 30 line 5, right? However, both lines refer to tears, but they result in good fortune. Thirteen five says, "after great struggles, they succeed in meeting." This says to me that there are problems in meeting the right one, but if the heart remains true, those who belong together will find each other.

Do you realize that this is actually two questions in one?

1. Will I meet someone?
2. By the end of the year?

Yi is probably answering the first question. And the answer would seem to be a definite "yes," because this is a line where lovers succeed in becoming united.

Fire is known for many things, but life is at the top of my list of meanings. It's there in 30, in 22, in 56; all lively things have some fire. So I read the question something like: is there any life in my future through this relationship? Does this relationship create life in each of us equally, and make us shine together as one? There's nothing better than a couple who bring out the best in one another. Of course very often we do the opposite after awhile. Even a great relationship requires work and sacrifice. The chances are as good as you (both) make them or allow them, or even just want them to be.

Gene, Ginnie, Meng - thank you all for your help and advice. And sorry for this late feedback, I've been busy with urgent matters that kept me away from the Internet for a few days.

I realize now that this was a yes/no question so, yes, not the best one to ask. As for hex 2 and relationships, I've read some threads here were it was associated with complications or conflict - something about being one of the 8 pure hexagrams with top and bottom trigram being the same - but the opinions were divided.

I guess the meaning depends very much on the question and how specific this is. I usually see hexagram 2 as a positive one.

Eastern Girl I am going to take a pessimistic view about 13.5 because as best as I can understand it, the whole Hexagram is about relationships of a less intense or intimate nature, with each line, including line 5 somehow stopping short of complete fulfilment. Added to that some translations of Hexagram 30 call it "Separation" and so yep, sorry, I inject a note of caution and suggest that you might - and with hope - will - make a new friend but it won't be without problems and it won't be a big romance. Sorry for the downer. If I am wrong, please come back, tell me, and rub my face in it! Peace.

Just a quick update: by the end of 2012, there still wasn't anyone new in sight. There were however some occasions to reunite with someone, so I think line 13.5 suggested that. It never happened, we just both contemplated the possibility.

I received the same hexagram for a rekindling question and thought what you wrote on your update was interesting, especially as most readings I have found online comment the 5th changing line in hexagram 30 as a rekindling an old flame or friend:

Line 5 (Cafe au Soul)​

People cry, then laugh = after a struggle a meeting occurs. Changes to (30) Clarity. While you may feel outwardly separated from someone, in your hearts you remain connected. No short term obstacle can undo a partnership of sharing over a long period of time. Regardless of the obstacles keeping you apart, Fellowship emerges again.
