Hi,
I have a new boss who is very demanding and highly critical, sometimes the pressure gets a little too much. Today I asked " how to deal with him for my best ". I got 17.1.2.3
look forward to your insights

Your relating hexagram is 28 so that does indeed show the pressure getting too much..because it is too much. Sometimes we suspect ourselves of overreacting..somehow here i don't think you are. Its an interesting answer I feel everyone will see differently. If I just take the primary and relating hexagrams to make a sentence (which does help with numerous conflicting lines) i get 'following excessive' which might be interpreted as being overly devoted as if perhaps your sincerity in adapting to his wishes may be a little too conscientious for your own comfort levels.. In adapting to bosses I always find secret rebellion eases the pressure :)mischief:)...or i could be on the wrong tack here and alternatively take 17.1.2 very much to heart and question whether hes the right boss to claim your allegiance. I think allegiance, sincerity, devotion, are quite strong factors in 17. I find in 17 one follows another becasue you share the same ideals and truly respect them and these lines in 17 question if hes the right one to 'follow'. But then if its your job and hes the boss how much choice do you have anyway I guess. Any chance to switch departments or something ? Anyway I think theres the need to do something to relieve the pressure, a bit more space and time and perhaps to try to go out beyond this situation and mingle with new others to get a perspective (17.1)

Boy, I think trojan hit the nail on the head, Following all his demands IS excessive!

I read 17.1 as refering to the boss. Wilhelm says of this line, "...if one wants to lead others, one must remain accessible and responsive to the views of those under him." So if the new boss is not willing to listen to feedback this line is confirming that you are not the crazy one in this picture.

17.2 talks about parting company from the inferior and the superficial. Now possibly this would mean to just ignore his moods and demands that are not helpful, but I would also think this is the I Ching giving you clear permission to consider that you may have out grown this crap and should look for a different job.

17.3 sounds like employees who put up with this boss's bad behavior are actually doing him a disservice. Perhaps you are being told that the angels will support you if you decide not to condescend to him.

Hexagram 28, "When he stands alone, the superior man is unconcerned, and if he has to renounce the world, he is undaunted."
Whoa, what could be more clear that the I Ching says you don't have to put up with this.

The whole thing adds up for me that this guy is new and desperately needs someone to set him straight. Maybe the next time he's carrying on you will have an opportunity to say something like, "Would you like some feedback?" If his response is negative, 28 tells you, "It furthers one to have somewhere [else!] to go."
---

You might also get value from reading what folks say about 17 in the Memorizing thread. If it's just not practical to consider looking for a different job, 17 also advises one on how to survive by maintaining an attitude of non-resistance. I also think that as 17 specifically refers to sleep and 18 to repairs you might try praying before you go to sleep each night. You just may find the angels have Worked On What Has Been Spoiled when you return to work the next morning!

i did study a little
in the end he realises you are a good worker, the progress of the follower
i am talking about the movement from 3-1 in 17,, so its just my observation
I am only looking at the lines mainly
not the majour hex's

Thanks so much for your replies.
few points
1. Due to some personal factors I cannot change my job for a few months more...i think my boss is aware of that
2. I am not a bad performer but the way the economy is, it is difficult to be excellent..he knows that
3. i cannot change my department

but he is less appreciative and more critical and very pushy and demanding( i guess he is like this with everyone) , that really makes things stressful sometimes...does 17.1.2.3 throw any light to it.

This looks to me to be very much about how you react/ behave internally to make the best of the situation that you have here. I see this very much as following what is right for you. Your innermost instincts and feelings.
17.1 - Your basic instinct is to withdraw. Don't pull away. Interact This is not a fight or flight situation.
17.2 - Take care of the inner you. Be safe and secure in all that you do. Do it for you.
17.3 - Really listen to yourself. Forget your fears and surround the situation with your own wisdom.

Some of this may be tough for you to see and then do, but it'll hold you in good stead. Walk your own path here and live with the consequences.

Hexagram 28, "When he stands alone, the superior man is unconcerned, and if he has to renounce the world, he is undaunted."

Take Care

Mike
