Hi Candid,

as a warning, the seeking of, the establishment of, a 'new' belief system is distorted by an excess in 'awareness' - we are seeing more than is there.

as a 'true', positive, change so establishing a sense of belief leads to enlightenment/awareness.

In ICPlus we have : "When in accord with one's belief, one moves towards the ideal and away from the past." - this could be interpreted as in the warning perspective in that the accord means we are "IN" the belief and so focused on an ideal, where an ideal is an exaggeration and so 'more than is there'! ;-) (but 'better' than what we had in the past - or so we believe! ;-))

The ERANOS text for the name is:

"SUI : come or go after; pursue, impelled to move; come after in inevitable sequence; move in the same direction, comply with what is ahead; follow a way or religion; according to, next, subsequent. The ideogram: go and fall, unavoidable movement" ERANOS p242

for 51 we have:

"CHEN : arouse, excite, inspire; thunder rising from below; awe, alarm, trembling; fertilizing intrusion. The ideogram: excite and rain." ERANOS p550

In the binary ordering we have:

yang................yin
25 17 21 51 42 03 27 24

In this context both 51 and 17 are 'exaggerating', 17 exaggerates 27, 51 exaggerates 42. As binary sequence PAIRS, 17 is with 25, 51 with 21.

There is an implication here of 17.5 exaggerating 27.5:

"One chooses to reject the regular ways and instead live by way of divination. Advantageous, although one is blocked from the flow of things."

hmmm... not bad! ;-)

Thanks, Chris. Though I had 2 change lines your perspective on 51 is also interesting.

"SUI : come or go after; pursue, impelled to move; come after in inevitable sequence; move in the same direction, comply with what is ahead; follow a way or religion; according to, next, subsequent. The ideogram: go and fall, unavoidable movement"

I like this rendering... a lot.

Is there a connection between 17.5 and hex 59?

"Thus the kings of old sacrificed to the Lord
And built temples."

There seems a common ideal in both.

ummm.. firstly the above is for 17 and secondly it is not mine - it is extracted from the Ritsema/Karcher ERANOS foundation I Ching (I gave the page number at the end) where the focus is on giving all possible meanings for each character in the original.

For 51 we have : "CHEN : arouse, excite, inspire; thunder rising from below; awe, alarm, trembling; fertilizing intrusion. The ideogram: excite and rain." ERANOS p550

17 in the 'species I Ching' is a context of expansive binding within which is operating expansive bonding.

readable as 'with enlightenment comes intensity in expression'

51 in the 'species I Ching' is pure expansive binding and is readable as 'with enlightenment comes awareness'

The 'common theme' that is present in both is the base influence of the sudden, the new, the moment of 'enlightenment', of thunder, so you can read hexagram 51 and pick-up the 'vibe' of also expressed in 17.

somewhere at the dodecagram+ level! ;-) but I am not aware of any 17, 59 pairing in a particular context. IT would be something like a religious perspective 'making something clear' as to a secular perspective 'making something clear'.

That said it could also be interpreted as imposing of 'illusion' (a belief system be it religious or secular) vs the dispelling of 'illusions'!
;-)

Note that 17 is locally integrating (yin top line), 59 locally differentiating. (yang top line)

17 globally differentiating (yang bottom line), 59 globally integrating (yin bottom line)
