I updated the 2.4 update all by myself.

It took courage but I did it.

:bounce:

I especially like the bar chart, what a good idea ;)

My question is is there anything else I am meant to see on the 'Insights Panel' apart from frequency of occurrence of hexagrams ?

I manage to miss most features on there so thought there may be but I can't see if there's another 'insight' option besides frequency ?

No, for now it's just frequency of occurrence, as you see. You can decide whether to include relating hexagrams, and filter by date. Of course, if you think of programmable things that it would be interesting to add there, you know what to do!

Oh I'm looking very gua 45 heavy, I'm looking forward to playing with it.

But about this in the email

Also, when you re-open your journal after the update you'll see a window asking your permission to collect anonymous usage statistics. That means strictly what it says: if you click 'Agree', it lets us keep running totals of software usage, but doesn't send any information about you or your readings.

In what sense does it let you keep running totals of software usage ? I mean what for ? What parts of the software usage did you want to measure ?

To know how people actually use it, what features they use and so on isn't a survey better ? Or are you trying to get an idea of how the features of the software journal are used directly via the 'agree' button ?

I think this needs more explanation really about the reasons, what are you aiming to find from this particular access and how does it access our journals ? I clicked 'ask me later' which is what I generally do when I don't understand why companies etc want access to my data. I tend to forever go with 'ask me later'. With this nothing has been said about what you are trying to find out re usage statistics ? What aspect of usage are you aiming to measure ? Frequency of use, or frequency of searching or frequency of looking up various features.

I'd always thought it worthwhile to keep an ear to the ground on what people actually do with the journal but I didn't think that meant you actually accessing the journal. An idea of the purpose, more about it would be useful.

Here is the explanation, from the Knowledgebase:

Hilary, does this work via the same (or similar) pinging mechanism to what causes the "update available" button to light up?

Thanks where is that link to ? What page, can't tell ? 'Resonance Journal Knowledgebase' where is that ?

Thanks, Liselle. I didn't go into this in the email because there's a link to that page from the consent box.

Trojina, if you click the link in Liselle's post, or in the consent box, you will get to the page. It's part of the Knowledgebase, which you'll find via Help > View Help in the Journal's main menu.

What aspect of usage are you aiming to measure ? Frequency of use, or frequency of searching or frequency of looking up various features.
Nothing half so involved - nothing about how you use the software at all, just whether or not you open it. And if you do, whether your copy is licensed and whether you're on Windows or Mac.

It's a separate thing from pinging for updates, because pinging means your computer asks Clarity if there's a new version, but Clarity doesn't take any notice of when/ whether you do this. (Well, I suppose something might be buried 5 miles deep in the server logs, but I haven't downloaded those for years.) The anonymous stats involve your installation actually sending some information to be stored at Clarity, along the lines of '1 person opened a licensed copy of version 2.4 on Windows this month.'

(Actually I think it might have been legal to collect this data without asking permission, because nothing about it is personally identifiable - it doesn't even collect an IP address. But we think unannounced data collection of any description is creepy, hence the consent box.)

That's a bit late by then though because one needs to know what it's for before agreeing but if you only see it once you have agreed then the people who are unsure can't find out.

I got to the page linked to I just couldn't tell where I was when I got there by looking at browser bar or whatever it is called. I think it's pretty unlikely that people are going to think to go to the page Liselle linked to. It would have been a good idea to link to that in the email or at least copy it into the email such as

  • what version it is
    [*]whether it’s licensed
[*]how long it’s been installed for, and
[*]whether it’s on a Windows or Mac computer
If that had been in the email I would have agreed straight away.

Apologies for telling you what you should have done - but I think that's what you should have done :devilish: there's not enough information in the email.

I see.

Not sure what 'pinging' is, alerting in some way I suppose. Anyway, yes stats tell you how many have new versions etc

Yes it's creepy but I think for consent box to be effective those 4 points I quoted could have been copied into the email given I'd hardly think to go and search around in the resonance journal itself for the information. I mean no one would do that except Liselle because we wouldn't know it was there. Also it's highly relevant to whether someone consents or not, at least it's relevant to whether I consent or not.

You get my drift ?

Edited to add it's not that you 'should have' it's just it was so brief in the email it made it look more questionable than it actually is.

Yes, agreed...

...but I think it's clickable before consenting, as far as I know?

For general reference, the Knowledgebase is also available from the site menu, in the "Journal software" tab, towards the bottom of the "Get the software" column, under "Get help."

Yes, it's entirely clickable before consenting. You get to the popup, you think, 'Hm, I would like some more information,' you see a link saying 'Click here for more information'... why not click it? :???: However, the usage is actually so simple it should be possible to have the whole explanation in the popup window, which would save people the click.

I think I clicked that and read it and was not much reassured - I can't recall if I did or didn't but I certainly wouldn't click it without more information. Even though I trust you Hilary and Justin there's something about those boxes asking permission so innocently that I steer clear of and go for 'ask me later'.

No, you're right, I just clicked 'more information' and those 4 points were there but at the time not enough to make me take the step although they are the same words as in the Resonance Journal. :paperbag: silly me..Still I think more needed to be said in the email in your own voice. Boxes popping up - well I still haven't agreed even now, it will take me a while...

Liselle's answer has gone....I saw it though. I just think in this case, in my defence, and of course my defence is woefully weak but I can try to retain some dignity, I didn't care what the 'more information' was I wanted to hear a human voice around it, I needed to speak of it because it's creepy and the journal is a very personal thing so I needed to have some actual contact around it - rather than obey a box.

Well since we do live in a world with emails from Nigerian despots and the like...caution is a good thing, usually I guess..

HERE LOOK AT TIBBLES ON A SNOWBANK.

We have snow here so it's time for "Winter Avatar with Cat."

Look CLOSELY - do you see anything extra-extra cute?

No, snowbank.

Click what I just posted. She's doing something extra cute (if you like cats).

What looks like beaded whiskers is just the camera pixelating them or something.

She's doing that thing with her tongue where it's sort of sticking out in contentment ?

Though I wouldn't think she was contented on a snowbank.

Yes! She has her little tongue out. I don't know why - determination maybe? "I will traverse the mighty snowbank!" (It wasn't that mighty, and she could come inside whenever she wanted; the door was open.)

Cuuute !!!

I like the idea of seasonal avatars. I take it this latest picture is 'winter' having had the black one in autumn leaves for autumn ? I had half hoped we might see Tibbles in a Christmas jumper with snowflakes and reindeer but I suppose she would be too hot.

 Such a picture does not exist. They don't have Christmas sweaters (jumpers - I've learned that one :D).

I don't actually have any other seasonal cat pictures I don't think, so this won't be much of a theme.

Well you have your winter cat picture now so I don't expect more until spring.
