Sometimes asking random questions can provide new insights into the meanings of the hexagrams. A poster was asking about a difficult relationship and the I Ching seemed to recommend seeing a marriage counselor. This led me to ask just what is the benefit of seeing a counselor? The response gave me a fresh look at 51. But first looking at the whole reading..
21.6 His head in a cangue.
Isn't that a great description of partners who aren't listening?
So a counselor might be called in when people are in such a position.
51. Shock, of course. But what I particularly got value from were Hilary's comments on WikiWing: "What must change? What stays the same? A wake up call. An opportunity to restore harmony." I'd always thought of 51 as sort of an unexpected earthquake where one just needs to stay calm and carry on. I hadn't considered how it might indicate a time to consider it means a time for intentionally re-evaluating and making changes. Like 51 is a necessary event that shakes off the deadwood.

Just thought I'd share that. :giggle:

Hi Rosada
The Image of 51 gives the story of the superior person examining himself then adusting and setting things in his life back on track. The Judgement tells us that the Thunder comes - crack, crack and that we can expect fear and panic but once these have been rebalanced things will be for the best. This sounds like a great picture of the context around counselling.

The essence of the situation when someone goes for counselling is the nuclear of 21 which is 39 - Limping : again calling for a turn about in character in the image. While 21 follows on from the place where we are encouraged to see things for what they are (20). In 21 the suffering that we experience provides the impetus for the 'new laws' (ways of living / behaving / thinking) to be enforced in our life. Our suffering becomes the motivation for change.
21.6 - says it all succinctly. The trap of closing our ears to the roots of the pain we suffer and the 'fertilising shock' that needs to be prepared for. The counsellor holds a safe space for the experience to be more 'fertilising' than 'shocking'.

A great share. Thank you.

I always relate Hex 51 to the Tower tarot card. It’s a card I love because it’s shaking things up so life or situations can settle into a positive or forward growth kind of way. It doesn’t mean we like it at the time and when I’ve received Hex 51 it has been a surprise or shock that I didn’t particularly like, at the time.
Hex 21- definitely Chewing things over and Line 6 - Listen up (or not) the outcome is on you!!
Definitely a counselling situation.
