hi folks,

would welcome any comments on 22.4 which i seem to be getting quite often lately. it's a beautiful line, for sure, what with winged white horses, grace, simplicity, and timely wooers, but i'd love to get a deeper insight into it.

thanks!
love to all,
xx sugarlobster

Hi SL,

Would it be possible for us to know a little more about the context of the query? Nothing ultra-personal, just a general idea? Thanks.

hi leonard,

well the general context is romantic love

and it tends to come up when i ask about his feelings, and also has come up when i've felt confused and asked about mine - which makes me suspect it might be telling me about my own feelings all along, but i guess it's not necessarily so?
i got it again today when i asked what effect a recent conversation has had on our relationship (22.4,6>55)

namaste,
xx sl

I have a lot of interesting information about hex.22, and I thought I had it all in my website. But obviously I had forgotten to add it. So I did now. It is at http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/hex_17-32/hex_e_22.htm

This hex is not only about beauty and adorning, but also about the cause for beauty: health, healing and energy.
It is probably about a plant with great healing qualities, a white one! Which might explain all the white in the lines.

Hi SL
While it's easy to get lost at 22 in glamor and superficiality, this line is about the mating dance, and the glamor and superficiality here has half a billion years of evolution behind it. It's all about romance and lies but it wants to establish something more sense-able. As LiSe suggests, while appearing to look for beauty it's really looking for health.
It wants substance if it's going to continue though. If you look at the Fan Yao at 30.4, without reality for fuel there is nothing to follow the flash.

sugar, to me its meant a return to simplicity of form, which is always good enough. A large diamond ring may dazzle the eye but the monthly payments can be hell. Love needs no adornment when its true.

Hi SL,

I certainly concur with Bradford & LiSe, but I might add that intuitively I sense here that you are conflicted about some aspect of the relationship and the Yi is telling you to take the simple, non-complex path to resolve such conflicts. Hope this is of some value. Good luck!

when the sea is stirred up it stirs also the sand
the eyes of love don?t noticed it
love sees love in everything

in time the sand settles taking it?s natural place

I believe line 4 is this place.

In the binary sequence hexagram 22 pairs with hexagram 36.
The overall focus in this pair is on covering-up, be it the need to hide one's "light" by being uncompromising or suffering the attacks of the uncompromising, or else by a need to draw attention away from the core and to the surface through beautifying the exterior, also known as facading or even to gloss-over and so draw attention away. In hexagram 36 the focus is on integration, like pulling a blanket over onself to cover up, whereas in hexagram 22 the focus is more on differentiation, on exaggeration of something to draw attention.

In the binary sequence hexagram 22 opposes hexagram 47.
With this pairing, both 47 and 22 deal with enclosure but 47 deals with being forced to drive one's roots 'deep' due to the enclosure and so become more integrated with the context, whereas 22 builds a facade to attract attention to the exterior and so has a more differentiating aspect. Thus in 47 one is enclosed whereas in 22 one is doing the enclosure, the source is within as compared to 47 where it is without.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the FIRE trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 22, the focus upon facading, 'opposes' hexagram 49, revelation, to unmask. More so, the exaggerated focus on revolution/revelation is reflected in a more balanced format by a focus on facading, gloss-over.

22.4 = "In the autumn of one's life comes spiritual strength, and the understanding that intimate relationships can be built without the need of facades."

BTW - IDM perspective:

context : expansive bounding, a boundary that moves, focuses OUTWARDS

The fire trigram reflects guidance in the lower, direction setting in the upper. Sense of ideologies, of 'sameness' within the boundary. Emotionally it maps to acceptance. As the fire burns outwards all within is converted to sameness - ash.

text : contractive bonding, sharing space with another/others but retaining one's own identity.

The mountain trigram refines this into quality control, discernment (and so issues of using, determining, deriving quality) when in the upper position of a hexagram. (in lower it deals more with stopping, blocking, a gateway etc in that the sharing is particular, selective and so excludes. In general for hexagrams, a lower trigram is more reactive, top is more proactive)

If we treat 22 as the archetype path being followed then the change is a distortion of the archetype and so pulls one AWAY from the path.

Chris.
