Some readings appear to give opposing information. For example asking the question "how can I be kinder to myself", I received Hexagram 25 (Innocence) with a change in line 1 leading to Hexagram 12 (Stagnation). I like Line 1 because the advice is to trust my instincts. However, Hexagram 12, Stagnation is "a reservoir of arbitrary and absurd misunderstandings with an 'ambiance of decay'".

Is the way to read this: If I trust my instincts, it will lead to Stagnation? So then, should I NOT trust my instincts?

Thank you for your insight.

I see it differently:

You have Hex 25 > Hex 24 > Hex 12

Innocence > Return > Stagnation

a person keeps away from difficulty > they retread the same path (Hex 25) constantly > they are blocked in communication

line 1 shows leaving Hex 25, and its fan yao shows hard labor

I see this as saying, "To be kinder to yourself, engage in a fight against the things that are keeping you down. This requires leaving notions of "innocence" and it requires hard work."

Basically, the Bhagavad Gita comes to mind. Fight the good fight, and even if you lose, you'll know that you did your duty.

Thank you mryou1, your interpretation speaks to me. May I ask, how did you derive Hex 24s relationship?

I think you are taking things a little too literally. With one line changing, the meaning of the relating hexagram is already taken into account. If there is standstill, it is because that is what you need in relationship to what the first line is saying. "Innocent behavior brings good fortune." In other words, there is no need to act. Just be who you are. That means no need for specific actions (standstill) The commentary says, "the original impulses of the heart are always good." Just go with that. No need for action.

You should beware of using single keywords for hexagrams, especially those with strong negative and positive meanings. 12 can just as likely mean a choice to walk away from an inferior situation into a positive one.

ichingtarot, the Hex 24 comes from an XOR operation. I could go into detail, but basically, you take each line that changes (in this case 1) and replace it with a Yang, unbroken line. And then the rest are Yin, broken lines. This gives you a new Hexagram which should show a sort of "bridge" between the Primary and Relating Hexagrams.

My humble 2 cents in validation of the above responses:

25.1>12
Great good fortune in being who you are naturally and following the natural instincts of your heart's path. I find it helpful to read the Fan Yao as the context of the matter. So 12 means to come out of stagnation and the dense energy you are experiencing "Trust your own heart" ~ Kiang

Be kinder to yourself by having the innate courage to dive into the activities that you innocently crave, for example :) Would a cleaner bedroom make you feel less bogged down? A hobby you've always wanted to take up? A hot cocao & movie night? Look in your heart, the answer is there...it's what makes you smile.
