I came back from a blissful two weeks to find that my little company's #1 client has gone mad:

Not paying our bills
Wanting more and more work
But ... wanting to pay less in future (and probably withholding payments has something to do with that).

All work has been delivered with very high satisfaction ratings - well over their top level of measurement. So it's not a question of unsatisfactory performance. And the demand for our work is increasing by word of mouth.

After much asking of the Yi along the lines of 'what's going on', why have I created this etc, I asked

How can I best help my higher power to resolve these situations (it's a large and complicated customer - big multinational).

All answers so far have been about positive outcomes, keeping still, keeping calm, lots of mountains.

But the answer to this question was 28, change lines 1 and 3, giving 58. I think I'm being told to keep still, that our two companies do need each other, and to be gentle even with their delightful procurement people who so enjoy stamping on suppliers (actually they eat little companies for breakfast).

If anyone has any other take on this, I'd be so grateful to hear it. That image of a pole bending under stress is soooo appropriate.

Thank you all

Ann

All I can get out of this is line 1 advises a lot of caution. Line 3 seems to be advocating bending a little bit, and allowing them a little lattitude. It is very sad though, I am very sorry for your company, for this is one of the advantages multinationals have, is they can bully their way around, knowing you do not want to lose their business. They pay their bills late, which none of us could get away with, and earn the interest on the money in the meantime, knowing companies can't afford to lose their business. Often it is such tactics that helped them get big in the first place.

Good luck with this,

Dear Ann,

I would like to share some ideas with you about Hex 28 and I sincerely hope that this helps you to face such adverse circumstances.
The hexagram describes a structure carrying a considerable weight, almost more than it can bear. Therefore, it is a time of ever-present danger. That is why the advice given throughout the lines is to behave with extreme caution. The problem only can be solved if one gets to the core of the situation, gently and sensitively.
There is a suggestion that the situation may be more complex than one thinks.
The first moving line advises that even if one seems to be over cautious this would not be a mistake, depicting someone ?spreading rush mats beneath?.
In the third changing line, again, there is an admonition. Do not be excessive. Actually, in this line, the beam bends almost to breaking.
As I can see in your post, you have already been careful to deal with the powerful multinational company. Because of that, I am not quite sure if the line is describing either the situation itself or your client?s attitude.
Anyway, as you can see it is really important to be attentive in order to avoid any action that might be a matter for some regret.

Good luck.

All the best,
Learner

Hexagram 28 deals with excess, but not just in being too full but also in going beyond what is required, prepared to go the extra distance for someone/something.

the eranos text has:

"TA KUO -

TA : big, noble, important, very; orient the will toward a self-imposed goal, impose direction; ability to lead or guide your life...

KUO : go beyond, pass by, pass over; excessive, transgress; error, fault."

Hexagram 58 reflects the concepts of intense self-reflection, both metaphorically (as in analysis of self) and literally as in promotion of self, the intense reflective power of a mirror etc - it gets into concepts such as bartering.

the eranos text has:

"TUI : an open surface, promoting interaction and interpenetration; responsive, free, unhindered, pleasing; opening, passage; the mouth; exchange, barter; straight, direct; meet, gather, place where water accumulates. The ideogram: person, mouth and vapor, speaking with others"

The suggestion in 28.1.3 can be interpreted as:

(a) a warning - doing something for someone, going the extra distance (something a company is prepared to do for their #1 client) can be/is being too intense, suggesting a dependency issue that can be, is being, abused.

(b) a transcending moment - a relationship based on excessiveness transforms to one based upon 'business', as in bartering, negotiating, cooperating - as such a focus on a need for constant communications to avoid 'issues' that can come up when one allows the relationship to just 'motor along' and so be taken advantage of. (there is a link in 28 to hexagram 18 - see below)

Hexagram 28 operates out of a realm of lack of trust in others (and so a need to cultivate relationships), hexagram 58 is more into trust in oneself (that can also reflect arrogance).

Elements from my Hexagram Notes page for 28:

"The generic properties of hexagram 28 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 44 mixed with the generic properties of hexagram 01.
A combination of being 'seductive' (44) with a focus on singlemindedness (01) is reflected in the excess, the exaggerations, the going beyond what is required, states of hexagram 28."

and

"In the binary sequence hexagram 28 pairs with hexagram 44.
This pairing reflects 'going beyond' the norm, be it in aiding someone/something (the excess of 28, to go the extra distance) or in the act of persuation/seduction of another (44).

In the binary sequence hexagram 28 opposes hexagram 27.
This pairing reflects the differences of being 'empty' and so developing a hungering (27) vs being too full (28). This overall focus is on excess, as in excess of emptyness vs excess of fullness. 28 can be extended to include the concept of doing more than is required to aid in someway, to go the extra distance etc.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the WIND trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 28, the focus upon excess, going beyond what is required, opposes hexagram 18, correcting corruptions."

Note with the comment re the "LOCAL level" that the 'opposition' of 28 to 18 reflects more that 18 is the more 'balanced' perspective of that exaggerated in 28 where in the fight against corruption (18) we have to 'go beyond' the norm but not get too carried away (as we can in 28).

From my Hexagram Notes page for hexagram 58:

"The generic properties of hexagram 58 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 10 with the generic properties of hexagram 06.
A combination of compromising (06) and the use of conduct (10) is reflected in the general properties of hexagram 58 with its focus on interaction cooperatively with others and so a need for self-reflection, both literally and metaphorically."

and

"In the binary sequence hexagram 58 pairs with hexagram 10.
In this pairing we see the conduct required in functioning in a hierarchic context, the need to clearly differentiate (10) one's actions associated with the overall need for self-reflection and intensity in expression (58). When we include concepts from five-phase theory, these two hexagrams reflect cooperative (top trigram of lake) and competitive (top trigram of heaven) exchange in a context of cooperative exchange (bottom trigram of lake). Thus hexagram 10 has a slightly more 'rigid' focus due to its competitive colouring, and so the need for discipline even if in a 'cooperative' context. On the other hand hexagram 58 is more integrating in focus and more cooperative, reflecting interactions with an 'audience' etc.

We note in the associations to the name of 58 a focus on bartering, on social exchange and this extends into the 'mirror' concept for the trigram of lake where others see themselves 'in' you, or 'through' you. In the context of emotions the trigram of lake associates with sexual love and so easily covers issues of replication. Overall the strong focus in 58 is to the five-phase notion of cooperative exchange, all part of the METAL phase in five-phase."

and

"In the binary sequence hexagram 58 opposes hexagram 52.
This pairing reflects differences in interactions between oneself and others (58) vs interactions within oneself (52). As such 58 is self-reflective, and 58 is self-restraining. BOTH hexagrams deal with invarient relationships in space, sharing space with 'another/others' but maintaining one's identity at the same time. The different focus on interactions is reflects in five-phase associations where 58 works in the realm of cooperative exchange (a part of the phase of METAL) whilst 52 works in the realm of conditional filtering (a part of the phase of EARTH) - the learning of, the use of, discernment and so filtering things as quality control.

At the LOCAL level, where we deal with an octet of hexagrams with LAKE as base, hexagram 58 'opposes' hexagram 41, thus 58 is the exaggerated form of 41 where 41 focuses on concentration, distillation, processes and 58 exaggerates this through its intensity in expression. (Note the alchemy focus here, and that means that the distillation process can go wrong and we end up with 'crap', literal 'decrease')"

Hope all of this helps ;-)

Chris.
