I think this casting is curious because 29 Chasm is all about flowing water, but 11 Flow is an entirely different flow altogether. Could anyone please help me with insight into this reading?

I asked the Iching- please give advice about how to relate to a connection with a man.

He is someone that I have been intimate with off and on over several years (some of these while I was on/off with another man), but who has struggled in and out of sobriety with binge alcoholism. I love him, and I believe his heart is true where I'm concerned- but he has an illness- and while he is working hard on his path- he has not had a full year of sobriety yet- (8 months). In the past I have put myself in harm's way where he is concerned- (this has roots in childhood with my father/mother)- but still these choices are on me, and it's on me to be care for my vulnerability.

We've recently been in contact and had some very good encounters, and we have both grown a lot- Reality though- our troubled past is between us- and I don't think it's right for me to put my will forward- to fool myself into thinking that I can heal anything by giving him my trust (or any intimate commitment) at this stage. Although it's hard, I believe that I need to let him go for now. Am I to understand 11 Flow in this case to be like Release (40)? or even Dissolution- sort of giving it up to the universe-to take care of things? Recently I've been confused also by the difference between these hexes- they all seem to be about letting go, but in different ways.

Hi Wondering,

Other titles for 11 include "Peace, The Symbol of Successfulness, Prospering, Pervading, Greatness, Tranquility, Prosperity, Conjunction, Major Synthesis, Hieros Gamos, Holy Marriage." It's a hard hexagram to capture, but for me it generally indicates good times coming which may either happen quickly or take years.

Hilary's key questions about each may help distinguish between the types of "flow":
11 How will you work with this extraordinary potential? How can you channel the flow of energy to create harmony?
29 What are you sure of in your heart when nothing else is sure? How can you flow on and through the dark?

I'd see the reading as you (11) trying to relate to your friend (29) and your instincts being correct about the danger being greater than you can handle (29.1.3.5). So, "good times coming," to me, seems more related to your own personal future.

It's important to protect your "inner circle" from chaos, but letting go can be relative. Love helps us become who we are meant to be, so there will always be something of the relationship that remains as a good part of you.

Iams girl- Thank you for responding. Your interpretation rings true and it also moves me in its breadth. I think the reading is comfirming that the danger is still there (I have learned by having repeated experiences with him- painfully so-29) and that my instincts are engaged to support me in recognizing this- and yes, toward better times- who knows what the future holds, or with whom what where? What has become clear in his behavior since the reading is that while he would like to be in relationship with me- and seductively promotes this (which is dangerous because he isn’t solid), he needs all or most of his energy for his own recovery- (he’s self absorbed and inattentive)-and this again is more bum deal for me- so I’m steering clear rather than doing the caretaking routine (and ignoring my own needs- in unhealthy resentment)- and yes, in maintaining caring distance from him while he works himself out- peace (11), no drama, and sanction of my navigation toward brighter relating altogether. It’s taken care of. Thank you so much!
